Hi All this is my first post in hope you can help :)

I Wanted to ask for support on what is upgradable in the ASUS NX90Jq, I was looking at a GTX580M and a i7-940xm.

Im aware that the 940xm is 10w more being an extreme edition ship there for would it be better to go with a 840QM due to heat?

and Im unaware of the full gfx support.

hope you can help as I love this laptop but could do with more power.

Many Thanks
Fully

unfortunately you cannot change the graphics processor on any laptop, since they are soldered onto the motherboard. The processor can be changed, but you have to make sure the socket will be compatible, as well as the laptop mobo can produce the correct wattage for the CPU. Are you from Hastings, UK.... I went there a few years back.

Oh I thought that the gfx in the NX90JQ were discreet and not hard soldered. as for the CPU if I was to go with the 840QM the wattage would be the same with hardly any change in the heat dissipation so think this may be the better bet.

as for the Hastings in the UK, yup thats where I am :)

how was your visit?

i7-840QM, those who upgrade to extreme edition in ROG laptops have problems with over-heating and Turbo-Boost turning off. ASUS generally uses custom form-factor MXM cards, so you are likely out of luck. :( Welcome @Fully!

So if I was to go with the 840QM which isnt an EE processor I may be alright?

as for gfx, seems like thats dead in the water haha.

Every 3-digit CPU with the "QM" postfix is OK, they are all 45W quad cores. 840 QM would be a sweet card.

The QM should give you a good performance boost. Do you have an SSD? That would be awesome.

The NX90Jq is quad-core by default, if my memory serves. Definitely upgrade to an SSD and max out the RAM. That will make more difference than the CPU upgrade. The CPU upgrade is very expensive, and most people will not max out the i7-720QM/i7-740QM (1.6/1.73 GHz). The +!33 MHz increase is hardly noticeable. The RAM and especially the SSD improvement will be much more so.

you could get a better laptop for nearly the same price of those upgrades.

Very true, but the NX90Jq is unique, and if you like it...I don't...then you might be willing to upgrade. Also, eBay is a lot cheaper to buy CPUs than Intel...if you get a trustworthy seller.

The fastest you can drop in is an 840QM, which is only a little upgrade.

I'm not sure about the GPU - you could whip off the bottom serviceable area and try to look to see if you can see a card with heatpipes coming off it. There's no way you could drop in a 580M though - not to replace a 335M. The TDP difference is huge. You maybe get away with.. a 540M/550M/640M/650M range, but I don't know where you'd find these and even if they'd fit.
