Seem like we are getting spammed to the gills with no end in site. How can it be stopped? Today was so bad with spam. I hate them.

We ban IPs but still the 41.xxx.xxx.xxx ranges comes back. There's not much more we can do to load up the site with anti-spam stuff, without pissing off genuine new members.

Sorry guys I needed to take my eldest to the specialist yesterday so was not on forum at all. I normally delete and ban about 100 spammer posters each day.

Seems like I am killing spammers every time I log on. Unfortunately we MODS cannot be sitting in-wait for the bad guys and the Report Post tool is a big help and we do appreciate the members alerting us to the threads and posts as you find them.

Yes, and I was sent to a conference for work so it seems like it was just neither of us being around. That's a rare case though. ;)

Yeah normally there is one of us around to take the trash out when they post.

Maybe a different captcha utility might give better protection. Some of them have been "broken".

Have you tried disabling copy paste possibilities?
Maybe if they cannot copy and paste, they wont spam because they would have to type each time their rubbish.

As a programmer I can tell you that it's impossible to do this. There are tricks you can do with JavaScript & such but they are easily circumvented by a technically savvy person.

It would cause problems for legit users though. I know several people who like to compose in another screen and just paste it into the box before submitting.

May be you can track their ip and find where they live and dispatch them ninja style.

Maybe we need more mods with ban powers?

Yeah, I know there are ways around it, was just a thought, maybe more mods would be the answer then?

maybe more mods would be the answer then?Yes, possibly. I can think of a few technical tools that might make fewer mods more effective like alerting to suspicious new users who fit a pattern but I'm not sure how much work it would take to create and integrate into VB. The most important thing is that everyone flags the spam posts so that the moderators get an email. Unless someone is going to sit here 24/7 and refresh the page waiting for spam the notifications are the best way for us mods to know when they strike.

How about any member or say select members with more than 200 post(you know they are not spammers by then) be able to ban any one with say 15 or less posts. If a legit new member gets ban he can email a mod and get back on.

DENISMX...hehehe... when u see that .. usually means a MOD already beat them down and they
are being dragged out to the alley behind ROG .. u know .. in the Dell parking lot...hahhahaa

This is getting insane .. good job guys .. what a waste of precious time for the Mods .. but thanks guys.

Maybe .. is it possible for a button to be added to members with over .. say 500 posts to quarintine them
until a 'real' mod is available .. it probably not possible ... but temp. take them out of the post lists ...
or a few more shooters on the wall .. just with 'spam' killing authority ? i dont know .. guessing.
this has been beaten around the bush to nausium ... all i can say is ..
sorry MODS ... but thanks.c.

It's not my decision but for the sake of discussion I'll say that IMHO mob rule is almost never good in the long run regardless of good intention. Without getting personal I'd ask you guys to consider the members of this forum with more than a handful of posts. Many of them lead with their emotions which is a good thing in many areas of life...but not moderation. If all regulars had the ability to ban new users I could see that getting out of hand the first time a newbie posts a controversial opinion somebody doesn't like. And if a new person is put out many won't bother trying to be reinstated so shooting first and talking later won't necessarily work.

My personal opinion is that ASUS could certainly bring one or two more mods in to better cover the day but they should keep the mod team small so that they can keep an eye on us. Since our actions reflect on the ASUS corporate image they need to be aware of what we are doing.

What is a good idea, is to have mods from different countries (xeromist US, HiViz UK) covers quite a lot where time zones are concerned, maybe an Aussie would get the "missing" timezone if we have any on here?
What I find strange is we don't get any spam on the french RoG forums (don't know if its just because its taken away before I see it or if they have a way of beating it)

I'll ask this evening how they do it and get back to you :)

Response from one of the ROG modos in France

Translation:

Hi, we have an automatic system that blocks messages with external links created by new members.
This stops the messages from being visible, but they are not deleted.
Then we proceed to deleting the posts and banning the accounts manually once we have seen the spam.

You don't see the spam, which is normal with this system, but I can guaranty that we get it ^^

There you go, all we need now is how to set up the auto block so that the messages arent posted.
But now he has explained how they work, it brings to mind a few problems that I remember when I first joined the forum. Before having posted a certain amount of posts, every time I linked to an external site, or wished to post a photo, I needed a moderation of my post.

edit: They use vbulletin to control the forum.

It has progresively gotten worse lately, I try and report as much of it as I possibly can when I see it. Though, I do think we could use an Aussie Moderator too; to cover the times when the US and UK are sleeping, though yes there is one in France....but, there is still a big jump in time between that Mod and me here in Aus......i'd do it if possible, just to help the Mods keep this crap off our Forums.

We'll look into the links one.

I got 168 reported post emails over the weekend - this is getting crazy now and has to stop! Tempted just to ban the whole 41.xxx.xxx.xxx range but that would be just an angry response on my part :(

Think we should trial a few days with that range excluded? I was close to doing this over the weekend but held firing it off in the engine. Need to trace the key suffixes after the 41 prefix and see if it will hurt registrations. Doubt we get many from whatever part of the world it is (why does Nigeria or a bounce from that region spring to mind)...lol

EDIT: Okay that came up as Ghana... Are we selling any ROG product out there :P

I say we go on a 3 day trial. We can always pull the wildcard out of the ban entry list if it hurts anyone.

I guess, you could put a ban for posting on that area's IPs, just let them to read the forum. You could also check if some members here are from that area, and warn them before blocking. Also, a note could be posted like "From XY country/area posting is not available" - plus give an email dress if someone really needs help to contact.

Raja@ASUS

All of that above would take mods, so that is something we can look at when there is time.

For now, banned some selected ranges and will monitor for 3 days to see effects. Knocked about 50% of today's spam count out from what i have seen since this morning. Most of it is from Ghana and Nigeria.

Actually it has cut the spam in half. Some still gets through and we will have to live with that for now. There are now more reported posts than spam posts I find. :) EG. 3 spammers had about 16 reported posts this morning. Compare that with two weeks ago we were waking up to about 20 spam accounts per morning.

If only there were a way to cost them more than they have to gain.
Maybe a dedicated server to bomb 'their' server with requests .. shut it down.
I know .. budget better spent elsewhere .. but gee what fun to give them the

Usually not because they've selected an ISP that is unresponsive or in a foreign country. Either that or they use zombies so the person you are reporting is just someone with an infected computer.

I second that, it took extra time to report those cyber-criminals. Thankfully, now we just have the spam. And, no we should not make the registration process harder, as fewer new members will come.
