It's no glitch mate, by the looks of things. I'd say they changed the Forum Rankings and added in the green one and also increased the posts required to ascend through each rank. Before they made the changes I hit "Orange" but then after I went back to White lol....but if one of the Admins or Mods who knows, can you guys please elaborate on the new Forum Ranking Structure and the required number of posts to hit each one? I know we are allowed to know this info...it's no secret :p

I hope thats not true .. If it is .. It is an INSULT. Pure and simple. Green ?
That takes a set of ROGz to slap members like that ...

... ill stop here .. my knee jerked so hard I think I busted my nose ... ROG'n us dirty.

ASUS .. Please explain this ASAP and your justification ...

I don't think it's such a bad thing mate, after all the rankings are based on the colored belts Martial Artists earn when they move up to the next skill set.

Generally the colors are the following...though this is dependant entirely on which Code of Martial Arts they take the belt rankings from.

White(clearly lol we know this)
Yellow
Orange
Green
Blue
Brown
Purple
Red
Black

Though as i stated they vary from Martial Art to Martial Art, the ones I listed are most of the common colors use in Karate, for something like say Tae Kwon Do(which I studied as a little brat :p) they would go

White
Yellow
Green
Blue
Red
Black

chrsplmr

NO... This is clearly insulting.

Myk SilentShadow
06-08-2012, 01:57 PM
How is the changes to the Forum Rankings any kind of insult mate? the Rankings really mean nothing, other than you have obtained a Ranking due to your number of posts....if the Rankings, however were due to experience/knowledge i'd be stuck at White Belt for quite a while until my knowledge undergoes a major overhaul.

Oh and both actually, skill and technical expertise

Chris, are you particularly upset because the "green" color? I mean, I do understand that the green doesn't shows so nice on the black, the background color of the ROG... :) red and yellow colors are matching fine with black... :) but being black... you would be invisible with this background... :D

But seriously, why the belt color would really matter? If that is based on the number of posts, you still are on the second place - sincerely, I don't remember that I would met here BrodyBoy (who has the highest post number excluding the moderators), so for me you have the first place!

I think he is upset because of the saying green as the grass, or green in the military stand point meaning new.
Or likea gamer standpoint as well.

Green is used to say someone is pretty much a newb lol but don't take it that way these are belts :P

He's upset because he worked long and hard to get to Black Belt and then over night the Ripped all of his work away from him... which amounts to saying Get Lost Jerk we don't want you around.

Sorry if any take offense to my remarks. Upset ? Well thats polite. Just stating a fact.
This is clearly an insult.
If it matters not .. then why the change ?
Or why not just remove the title unless you are a Mod .. or @Asus ?

Z.."Chris, are you particularly upset because the "green" color?" ... YES.
I earned my Black Belt by the rules .. to take it .. or BrodyBoys or any other ...
an insult to our selfless efforts .. that simple.c.

If your town writes a new law that houses will be 25 feet from the property line..

No your not...:p As for me I wouldn't want the Position!;) Too Much Work! I personally think the Titles should be linked to the Karma thingy like everywhere else, not to Post Count. Also the Mods and Staff Shouldn't be linked into the Karma or Post Count at all or just set them to the Highest because their totals are really meaningless. They wouldn't have the Title of Mod or Staff unless they have already earned it.

Myk SilentShadow

I have asked Raja and MarshallR for the rationale behind this .. there must be a 'reasonable' explaination.

I think I took it as it was meant.... ill leave it there.c.

DaemonCantor
06-08-2012, 04:33 PM
That green Dot under the Title...that is your Karma and on all of the forums that I've ever maintained or used is what sets up your Title not how many Post you have...A person usually is judged by their Karma meaning How Useful their Post are. I have 1 Dot get I have to get 200 Points before I get a second Dot but right now I only have 47 Points... As far as I am concerned my Title should only be a White Belt.

I think I took it as it was meant.... ill leave it there.c.

I have no information on any of this, but isn't that a bit self indulgent to take it personally? The tiers changed for everyone so to say that the leadership changed everyone's rank to insult one person? Really? Actually the likely result of this will be that you will eventually have a title that nobody else has because you have such a high post rate. So you'll actually end up more "special".

I'm on another forum where the ranks just changed after many years. A lot of folks had the same title despite large differences in post counts because the rankings no longer accurately reflected the range of values. A few people were attached to their rank but most realized that a post count and corresponding rank didn't reflect on their value as a person.

I agree completely with DaemonCantor! "That green Dot under the Title" should have more weight in judging people who post...

Right now everyone has only one green dot, we can see the level only if we hold the cursor over it. Practically, I've seen only two levels there: "XY is on a distinguished road" and "XY will become famous soon enough". I'm not sure if this is clear enough for a new member to judge who's idea would be more helpful for a given problem.

I do believe that this Karma/Reputation thing should be more accentuated then the ROG level/post number thing... Quality is more important then quantity...

Just take as example my situation: I've joined the Forum in March, 2011. This is going to be my #658 post, and I have 16 point for my reputation (the members and visitors can see only "Zka17 is on a distinguished road"). What exactly this means for a person who just joined the Forum and need some help? Practically nothing... He/she has no clue if I just like to get involved in the discussions (which I do like :) ) and/or I really have the experience to help (which I only hope to have or acquire it soon :) )? As this Forum is set up, discussions and conversations are going on - everyone can get involved and help and/or learn from here. The problem is that we are people and we make mistakes... :( But, more reputation, less chance for mistakes...

So, am I an expert or just someone who makes time for this Forum? In my case is certainly the first choice is right... :D

Also, the problem with the Reputation/Karma could be that not everyone can be an expert in everything... Somehow would be nice to allow everybody to see what posts that member got the points for... Would be much easier to see who is the most competent in the given issue... In the same way, not everyone realized in time that reputation points can be given... it happened with me (I already remediated this) too... Somehow everyone should do this part with the rep points... just to have a system where we really know who is the best expert in a problem...

X, I didnt say that at all ... not even close.

There was no respect meant either or this would have been posted to inform.

Your right .. we were being over run with black belts and i can see how
it became a pressing issue ...
Of the 26,239 Members how many 'were' so-called Black Belts ? 5? Maybe.
Black Belt implies expert and now this is a support forum, not community,
I get it .... no problem.

If I had known it was not a glitch .. I wouldnt of started this thread ..

Im curious. What 'other' forum are 'we' aspiring to be like ?
And on what planet is lowering of rank not a slap ? (without explanation)
I apologize for my ignorance.

Id like to see this entire thread deleted .. as it matters not.

I agree with me. It is an insult.

Actually, it seems like they upped the higher requirements, as I am still a white belt--real proud of that. I have 15 points of reputation, and 3.18 posts per day. Proud of that too. It seems fair to give you a new challenge, @chrsplmr, now you have more work ahead of you. ;)

I joined about 2.5 months ago, and already I am in the top 50 by post count--including the mods--out of 2072 registered members. You better keep working, as a certain single-plane symmetric person will be the first new black belt...:)

I'm very sorry to all, this is my fault. I should have forewarned. Lesson learnt. Certainly no insult was intended!
I couldn't add MORE (like 1st Dan, 2nd Dan etc) so I spaced out the list as it ended about 1000 posts. I am open to suggestions if you'd like adjustments. EDIT: Just found the 'add more' button :(

Actually I thought most people could change their user-titles to whatever they wanted, but it doesn't seem to be the case. If you really wish to add something custom I can look into it on the backend.

We want the forum the be a long term investment so I upped all the values because they were low. If everyone can be black belt in a year it's a challenge but not a great one that invokes the strength of feeling that really upping a belt should do. This is exactly what happens in real martial arts where you can progress in the low belts quickly but it gets much harder as you hit the middle and upper tiers.

Thank you for these Marshall!!! it certainly helps to know what I am up against, lol it's a good thing you didn't follow the rankings of Tae Kwon Do, not sure if you know or not, but in that Style, between those colors I mentioned, are tips that get added to the belts, so like thus: white with yellow tip, yellow with green tip, green with blue tip, blue with red tip and then red with black tip...lol, this would confuse soooo many members if this format was used...and I think using the "Dan's" would freak just as many too lol :p

Zygomorphic
06-10-2012, 10:16 AM
What are the "Dan's"? I agree that using the tips in addition to the belts would be totally confusing. Maybe we can add another ranking:
ROG Guru Invisible Belt :p
Say:
Invisible Belt 0
Junior Member 5
Member 20
Enthusiast 100

From "Enthusiast" on out the list is as @Marshall gave us. But the new post count? Wow! Not even the mods have hit the Brown Belt. @HiVizman is ~4800, last I checked.

Myk SilentShadow
06-10-2012, 11:05 AM
Dan's are a special ranking in Martial Arts, for the more skilled Martial Artists mate. They are silver tips that are only added to black belt holders belts....Dan's take a lot of work and the highest I ever remember seeing any Martial Artists going, was about 4 or 5 Dan's....many years of training undertaken to reach such a rank.

or even simpler ..

ROG Member 'G 1000+ (@ 1000 posts a Member is a Proven ROG.. 'we' are NOT other forums.)
Let the post count stand from there ...

As to myself .. I have asked and am serious .. whatever it takes .. lower and freeze my count ..
if that is what it takes to ROG Member ... or let the post count roll but freeze the title to Member ..
that works for me .. thats as 'special' as I need to be.

HiVizMan ? .. hahhahaha ... that brother is SuperHuman .. you better look again .. that is 1000 per month...
AND between Work. .. Salute .. you lunaticROGoManiacYou...

Since 2006 few ... very few .. have posted anywhere near 1000posts .. average is under 20.
Xeromist .. before HiViz followed by BrodyBoy and a coupla others over 2000 ... are they not ROG Masters ?
The answer is of course .. YES.... Maybe not Technical Masters .. who can be ? does @Asus not constantly train as the tech advances ? ..of course .. at the very least they are '(old)G ROGz .
10,000 ?? Only a trolling freak .. other than HiViz .. hahahha ..

My apologies to MarshallR, Raja, Xeromist and All .. this shows the passion for ROG we hold dear ..
Why ? Who cares...It is. hahhahahhaa ... as u all wish .. so shall it be.

I'm open to changing it if others really don't like it as well. I don't care either way.

Your suggestion needs at more grades, Chris: there needs to be at least 10 levels.

Raja@ASUS

After 5th Dan come specializations in certain styles:

1) Very stiff Karate chop - useful for removing seized push button coolers.

2) Four finger technique specialist - this is used by system builders employed by vendors who insist on using cheap PC cases that cut thumbs.

3) Hard knuckle - Perfect for punching PCH coolers in an attempt to revive a motherboard that is suffering from weak BGA joint.

4) Super Dexterous Crane - Multitasking kung-fu specialist, answering phones while building PCs and shipping orders.

Completion of any two combinations grants one entry into the Ben Ching School of Overclocks

It's all funny **** to me :P

HiVizMan

Chris pull them trousers up mate, those cheeks are not the ones you are expected to turn. :D

I think the upper level numbers are about spot on. It is the lower 8 or 10 that need to be smaller in band to make it accessible for folks in my view. After all this is a support forum and most folks do not hang out here and gossip. So that means fewer posts per person as a rule. Therefore 10 000 post say for a level is unreasonable.

As Rich has said it is easy to sort. And I think we should just shift the bands below the black belt level and level the black belt grade as it is.

Regards
