Hey guys,

So I walked away from my desk this afternoon to return to a screen saying: "hard disk: S.M.A.R.T Status BAD, Backup and Replace error ". After doing some research, it seems that my HDD is failing?! Only 6 months after purchase. After all the computers I've owned through the years, this is a first. But, what can you do, these things happen. Been trying to get the thing to boot to make a quick backup of files, but it's not wanting to let me. Funtimes!

I guess, since this is the first time it's happened, I'm looking for guidance on the next step. I'll be ordering a new HDD tonight, but when I receive it, what is the best method to get back up and running. I did create the the backup ISO files to start when I got my G74SX. I also contacted ASUS on RMA'ing just the HDD or should I contact Western Digital about that?

Edit: BTW, It's a 7200rpm WD SATA Drive (non-SSD).

any and all help will be greatly appreciated!

Judging by what you said I don't think you will be able to recover files easily. It's pretty rare for a HDD to fail now days, but it does happen. It's only six months old so it should still be under warranty. I doubt ASUS would want you to remove the HDD and just send that in, they will probably ask for you to send the entire laptop in.
