I have a G74s running win7 x64 pro. I talked to Asus support about an inability to run 32 bit programs which they said is "by design". So what is the syswow64 stuff for? Shouldn't technically the 32 bit version of ie9 (among other software) work? So much software claims to be 64 bit but relies on the wow64 side of the fence.

I'm running more 32-bit programs on my G74SX than 64-bit. What 32-bit programs are giving you trouble? What errors are you receiving?

I can confirm both IE9 32 and 64-bit run simultaneously without issue.

I posted some error messages here:

The wpfgfx_v0400 dll seems to error out.

I guess being that you can run ie9 32 bit and I can't means something. I've done all the updates, reinstalled windows, etc. A hardware issue? 32 bit programs when running look like a paint/render/redraw type of issue, they kind of jump all around, leave artifacts, resize on their own, then stop working.

That is due to the wpfgrx_v0400.dll having issues. Try installing the complete .NET framework 4 in 32-bit mode to ensure that you get the right versions of all the .DLL's. That may help. Keep in mind that Microsoft generally tries to encourage the installation of the Client Profile version which is smaller. You can try that if you want, but if that doesn't work, I would definitely try the Full.

That didn't work.
Am I supposed to have a "Windows Presentation Foundation Font Cache 4.0.0.0" service? I only have a "Windows Presentation Foundation Font Cache 3.0.0.0" service. It doesn't seem to want to install.

Another thing I find weird is the nvidia driver installer. On the asus site the driver doesn't have a splash screen and doesn't crash, but it you get the driver off the nvidia site, while the splash screen is displayed the installer will crash.

The issues you're talking about are not even slightly normal. There should be no issues with 32 bit programs (IE9 or otherwise). Have you considered or tried to restore your G74SX with either the restore partition or a WIn7 SP1 x64 install DVD?

Edit: Removed "Nvidia installer" from parentheses. Thanks Zygomorphic!

If he tries to install 32-bit nVidia drivers then all sorts of bad things can happen. Make sure that you install the 64-bit version of the drivers. @DrBeltway, you are correct about IE9, that should run...I use Firefox, so I can't say...or IE9 64-bit.
