View Full Version : Yet another thread about SSD and some more specific questions

Hey everyone! So I've decided to get a HDD caddy and put it in my ODD bay on my G55VW, because I'm planning to get an Intel 330 Series SSD inside my gaming powerhouse. I was thinking of moving the 750GB SSH in the caddy and installing the 330 Series into the original drive bay on the computer. There are some factors I am concerned about though:

1. Since the ODD connection with the MB is only 1.5Gb/s, will I sacrifice any of my 7200rpm HDDs performance?

2. One more thing is that the optical bays on all laptops have a bit of rattle and are only secured to the chassis with only one bolt, could that induce some extra vibrations in the HDD when I put it in the caddy, and produce bad sectors or lower the health of the HDD somehow?

3. Can I move the ODD cover from the side of the laptop and put it on the caddy so that the laptop won't look like it has a big hole on the side of it. Will it work with a traditional caddy I can buy from ebay for example, or do I need a special one just for my model laptop?

1. i would say there is no sacrifice in performance (a typical 7200rpm hdd's data transfer rate is about 1Mb/s). you can do a comparison of the transfer rates of your hdd when it's in the sata iii slot and the odd caddy if you want.

2. first, you're using a hdd caddy that is supposed to secure your hdd nicely, there is nothing there to induce extra vibrations.

3. yes you can move the cover to put it on the caddy. check the specs of the caddy, they should tell you if it's compatible or not.

Thanx for the nicely structured answer :)

you're welcome :D it's because your questions were nicely structured lol

go look for 12.7mm sata-to-sata hdd caddy. it fits nicely into my g55.

Thank you mate! Can you share where you got it from just to compare prices and to take a look at how exactly it looks like? Thanx!

@rewben Sir if you don't mind can you post us a picture of how the HDD Caddy looks on your G55 I'm planning to get one too :D

uh? you cannot 'see' it while it's inside. it's covered by the casing.

note that your caddy might not be the same. don't worry :) it's a very simple replacement process. you will not miss a thing.

@rewben why are you using the SSD in the ODD bay since it has lower speed than the original HDD slot? Are you using 2 SSDs in RAID0 or... ?
And if that's the case can you please post some speed tests of the rig? Thank you!

@ggBanks, no i don't do raid0. i know it looked awkward, but i happened to have an old ssd so i put it there. it's much better than my 1tb 5400rpm hdd in terms of transfer rate :)
