Hi guys! My first post:)

I was trying to find a way to contact the ROG team and I thought I did... turns out I sent a msg to the forum admins:( Sorry guys! It was a noob mistake.

Just wanted to post a msg of pleading & praying that maybe someone could send one of these 14" babies to AnandTech for review. I'm sick of reading their Alienware reviews and not a single ROG review! Also, love the fact that notebookcheck.net does reviews of the G series.

Anyway, good luck with the launch and I hope I can save up the money to get one sometime in the next 12 months!

Thanx
maoli
(Incurable seti cruncher, among other things...)

Edit: While I'm still in begging mode, would it be too much too ask for an eGPU (thunderbolt) sometime in the next 18 months?:)

eGPU...I wish. Don't worry about such things, if something bad happens, we'll PM you...if you spam ("buy iPad cheap"/"buy cc #'s")...we ban. Otherwise, we fix anything that goes wrong and try to help you out. :)

So far as I know G45/G43(new intel chipsets) on new Motherboards due to be released.

I trust so will be true of the new 14" ...

Im root'n for an AMD/ATI ... (hey, im allowed to dream ...) Welcome to ROGforum.c.

I think the new Asus ROG 14" notebook will be called the G46VW, according to this post on some Vietnamese site (with specs, video and pics):

http://www.tinhte.vn/threads/1548572/

Here is a copy and paste of the specs:

Intel Core i7-3630, 2.4GHz
NVIDIA GTX 660M discrete graphics card
Intel HD 4000 integrated graphics chip (auto switch with GTX 660M)
12GB RAM 1600MHz bus
Screen 14 "1366 x 768pxl
128GB SSD (mSATA, install OS) and 750GB HDD
Connectivity: 3 USB 3.0, mini-Display Port, HDMI, LAN, Bluetooth, WiFi N. ..
No official price

Everything sounds great except for the resolution. I really hope there's an upgrade option to at least 1600x900. If not then I'll have to pass. 1366x768 is such a letdown. C'mon, Asus, don't let me down!

I've yet to see ASUS come out with a optimus supported laptop (that actually works)

If I had to guess that went for the performance not so much the screen quality.

I'm also kind of suspect about that GPU. That's a pretty high end GPU for such a form factor. I could see maybe the 650m GDDR5 as the likely candidate

as to the 1366x768 ... i doubt this big time .. on a ROG gamer .. the new transformer has 1920x1080 ..
and that can only peak in the window @ ROG.c.

I also thought this would launch with a 650m. Kind of like Asus's version of the Alienware m14x. Who knows, maybe those specs up there are just made up. I really hope that resolution is wrong.

Ask NVIDIA how they feel about the Tegra 3 running at 1080p.

Just because you can do it doesn't mean you should do it.

ASUS generally focuses on making a product that delivers a very specific goal.

1366x768 would allow the sub 6xxm series GPU to deliver the very best performance and then in turn give the best user experience. It would also allow the unit to meet a price point that may be in the comfort zone of their target market.

This product might also exist to gauge market interest and be improved later down the line, so ASUS didn't want to have a huge amount of production costs.

Dealing with the gaming market is always a huge gamble because of the mentality of the user base.

I don't have any information about the new G45 series so this information is based solely on my person opinions

G75, G55 and G46? That doesn't look right:p
But seriously, I know the first number is inches but NO idea what the nomenclature is for the second number...

As for the screen, I just hope it has half decent viewing angles. And if it's really gonna be 1366 I would have preferred a 13" screen. But it'll either have an option for 1600 too, or be 1600 only (hopefully). I guess we'll know by the end of the month.

Edit: And since I'm still in begging mode, a switch to bypass battery charging would fantastic for someone like me that is OCD about their batteries. Especially batteries that cannot be removed:)

There is almost NO difference between the 650m and the 660m. same chip, same bus, same shaders, slightly lower speed clocks on the 650m than the 660m.

That's not exactly true.

The 650m GDDR5 can be clocked to about the same speeds as the 660m

650m GDDR3 cannot hold a candle to the 660m or even the 650m GDDR5
(ASUS N76 series has GDDR3)

I think you may have those numbers the wrong way around. Like I mentioned in my first post I do a bit of Seti crunching and have been staring at these two chips for nearly 6 months now... AFAICT it's actually the DDR3 that has the same clocks as the 660m and to make matters worse the 650 DDR3 is slightly better at compute while using a a few less Watts!?

I could be looking at bad data but I think it might be a bandwidth bottleneck that makes the 650m DDR3 worse than the 660m at gaming.

That's actually pretty interesting.

If I get some time i'll try and get some whitepages from NVIDIA on the DDR3 vs DDR5 versions of the card.

It also might be a driver issue.

It's possible that NVIDIA hasn't fully optimised the 650m GDDR5 for CUDA* support and instead focused on it's gaming aspects. I could see them doing that because the mobile series GPU's (and even GeForce) aren't designed for intensive computing tasks.

*generally CUDA support also plays a factor in the hardware design of the card

Zygomorphic

GDDR3 is known to use less power, and that (Along with cost) is why it is in the majority of laptop GFX cards. I'll bet that the SETI crunching is due to driver considerations and/or statistical variation...lower heat from GDDR3 memory = more thermal headroom for core/shaders.

Please tell us there's a 1600x900 or (hopefully) a 1920x1080 screen option. With Apple upping their 13.3" macbook to that insane retina resolution, I don't think 1366x768 is going to cut it anymore.

the revelation of the g45 specs is kinda dissapointing especially after the windows 8 release. i was kinda expecting it had touch screen functionality. since windows store is open developers will make games that are touch based and it feels like asus passed an oppurtunity like this in thier g45 model. asus could also make a taichi like "g" laptop, i was expecting asus could make the initail steps toward high end touch gaming but looks like other companies are doing it. :(

I hope the designers take a look at this, I still feel the g45 is a windows 7 device

@pongkie, you are right on about it being a Windows 7 device. High-end (enthusiast) gaming isn't likely to be touch-oriented for some time at present, so skipping the touch on the G-series saves money and frustration. They have the TaiChi if you want something really cool...

i would love to get tiachi but i think i would over heat once I play games like D3, maybe i would settle for the asus aio et2300 just becuase it has touch screen and a simple nvdia graphics chip, i would just sacrifice portability for the time being then buy a gaming laptop with touch *cough ROG team take note cough* and intel haswell next year :)

Higher res screens - can't say whether before December as things could be delayed.
I've not seen a 3D screen planned, but HDMI and DP ports are 3D ready.
No subwoofer - 2.0 only, but the speaker hardware: amp, bass chamber, speaker cones, are all the same size as G75.
The mSATA SSD could change so the model isn't stated sorry. It's SATA 6Gbps, that's all I know.

Anyone know which resellers have the laptop available right now?

Sorry but none right now, available in the US retailers that stock existing G series very shortly. Sorry for the delay :)

wow, it looks fantastic. and it has dual band wifi and optimus... Kind of regretting getting my G55 now lol!

Does SonicMaster audio mean no more crappy VIA as well? And for the back vents, is one side covered like the G55 or is it like the G75 where both vents are open?

@Richard

Just a heads up, you swapped the numbers around in the Intel link for the i7 (in red letters in the article). Should be 3610Qm instead of 3160Qm.

Most people are gonna hate me for saying this but I'm glad to see there's an i5 option. Always thought the i7 is overkill for a GTX 660m. Would much rather spend the extra ~$150 on a second drive, or more RAM or... beer:)

Ooops thanks!

The i5 is exactly the same used in the latest MacBook 13" Retina. Personally I'd opt for a dual-core too - if I'm doing video transcoding I'd use QuickSync or CUDA (Freemake uses CUDA) and I value the extra battery life ;)

I will ask about the BL difference to see if our PM knows.

WontonNoodle - .n it's single 150MBit. .ac is full dual spec. Both sides are open and vent. Audio is still VIA but no subwoofer and mature drivers should make things far smoother.

This laptop is really awesome!!
-GPU is soldered on motherboard or MXM?
-If MXM, what type it is?
-Can it handle for GTX670MX or greater than?
-If yes, there will be those option? or we have to buy from another vendor?
-Can I just use msata SSD without HDD? (more battery life and lower weight?)
-Whats about msata SSD RAID0 with SSD?

PS. I really want 3D option if it have :D

The specification of the G46vw is impressive and it suits the 14 notebook very well.

Seems like the real one and the official picture are really different. The official one look very slim

Yeah I've seen those pictures posted on that website, but you've got to remember...those shots are probably based on a very early test build, whereas the final product will be very different. I prefer the slimmer profile of the official screenshot though. Makes it more portable. :)

If you are right that should be great. But I afraid that this official pics are just photoshopped.

Indeed! Cool and quiet yet powerful and deadly. If anyone sees it for sale before I do, let me know. I got dibs on one in the first batch. :P

I can take a side-profile shot. What do you want it compared to?

It's only 2.3-3.8cm fat.

Hi there,

Marshall if you have one g46 there and the time to do that can I ask you to run some test and benchmarks and post the results here, just to show us the temperatures of the G46 compared to G55 under stress (because of the hardware similarity), I wonder about the numbers :)

Thanks

Yeah, I was a bit confused by the pictures with the back vents and those without. I guess this is the value version for now. I've also checked the ship to store option but most are unavailable (hopefully orders can be placed sometime this week).

Not a problem bro, I just wish they would hurry up and release it for sale. Still cannot place an order for it on BestBuy (no shipping although you can purchase and send to an outlet close to you but no outlet has it as yet). Got me seriously considering a Dellware. o0

Haha me too! I see myself checking Best Buy at least 5 times a day! They tell me its unavailable everywhere because the laptop is in such high demand lol. Seriously cannot wait for it. ;)

LoL! Well I just bugged em on facebook and here's how that went:

‎"Best Buy I'm trying to purchase the following laptop from your website: Model - G46VW-BHI5N43, SKU - 6775259. Now according to the website, if purchased this item can only be picked up from a local BB store (which I am trying to select), however no stores currently stock this item. Is it that a) between 18.11.12 and 20.11.12 (today) the laptop sold out? or b) you are in the process of distributing this model to the various outlets and forgot to update the website or c) you intend to release the laptop for sale at a later date (would be nice if you let us know when)? Any insight would be appreciated thanks. :)

Best Buy Hi Damien-

Looking at this unit I can see that it is brand new and may not have shipped to all locations just yet. Hopefully that will update soon and I have forwarded this on to our online support teams. Thank you for sharing with us today!

-Jesse-"

So hopefully something will be done soon to alleviate the waiting time, although i suspect that it may be after the whole Black Friday/Cyber Monday fiasco. Ah well one more week won't hurt, I just wish it was sooner. :)

Btw: Welcome to the forums BeepFTW :)

Patience is a virtue.

Sometimes wanting is more pleasurable than having. It is not logical, but it is often true.
