Before upgrading to Windows 8:

DO NOT uninstall the Intel Rapid Storage Technology (IRST) driver
remove versions of NVIDIA VGA driver older than 23th October 2012 (V9.18.13.0668)
and install NVIDIA VGA driver V9.18.13.0668 (http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/Drivers/VGA/VGA_nVidia_Win7_64_Z918130668.zip) or higher under Windows 7 before upgrading to Windows 8

Go to support.asus.com and search for "atk" or "atk package" and grab the latest (ends in 22). It will toggle it, but you will have no visual indicator.

Thanks for reply. Ill try that but still waiting from Asus for new drivers. I dunno why they taking too long.

I'm sure it takes a while to get the monkeys in the lab to update the website and stop flinging poo at each other... KIDDING! I just went to the zoo today, so I had this flashback from the monkey exhibit (Bronx zoo NY, good times :)

I know there's got to be an internal testing process and I expect they don't want to release something that hasn't been sufficiently tested. I'm sure there's probably an ASUS internal resource who's tested them, but they probably need to be approved before they get posted.

i'm using ATK Package 1.0.0023 (http://nbtsd.asustreiber.de/Tools/ATK%20Package_V1.0.0023.zip). you can try it out if you wanna see if the visual indicators were fixed.

Ha! Another one... I checked earlier today and I don't think .0023 was out then. I definitely will give this a go.

ATK .0023 works fine, but still no visual indication of toggling keyboard backlight level or touchpad on/off. Not a problem for me, but just figured I'd post back.

no, thank you for all the tests! just to double check, is your Keyboard Device Filter Utility 1.0.0.5 (http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/DriversForWin8/KBFilter/KBFilter_Win8_64_Z1005.zip)? i am not sure if this is related.

I didn't update my kbfilter driver, but I don't recall this making a difference on my G73 previously. I'll update it though and let you know momentarily.

EDIT - No difference, but I did update it. When I toggle powerscheme (FN-Space) Power4Gear comes up, so right now I'm leaning toward a change they made with ATK somewhere around the .0020-.0023 versions because I recall having some notification with earlier versions, but as I said, it's not a big deal since the functions all work.

ok, because i checked the 2ksetup.ini in the package, and it's like the following:

[Common]
HardwareID=*ATK3001
HardwareID2=ACPI\VEN_ATK&DEV_3001
HardwareID3=ACPI\ATK3001
HardwareID4=*PNP0303
DriverName=KB filter Driver

so i thought it might be related lol! maybe you need to reinstall ATK Package after that, too.

Oh, the KB filter definitely is labeled ATK, but I have never had to install the filter in the past to have the on-screen display for the function toggle. I've rebooted after the install as well, so I'd expect that if there was anything to integrate it'd be done.

I'm fine with it as is, and the biggest benefit as I said was the Power4Gear because previously I didn't have anything aside from the base WIndows power management tools.

We'll see what the release schedule is now, but I expect we'll see true updated Windows 8 drivers pretty soon at which time I'll update or at least make sure what I'm seeing is a match with others.
