So I just purchased a g55 last week and upgraded to Windows 8 immediately upon receiving it. I never bothered to even make a backup disc as this is now my 3rd ROG laptop and I've always just used F9 to format if I needed to. Now everything is fine with Windows and such however I noticed the F9 recovery option seems missing. Hitting F9 at boot does nothing. I looked at disk management in Windows and it showed an EFI partition of 20mb and recovery partition of 24gb both of which had 100% free space. Does anyone know what may have happened? I upgraded to Windows 8 on my g74sx and f9 still worked fine afterwards.

Is there no place I can just download a recovery image or Win 7 iso legally I mean from ASUS? I don't want to send the laptop in as it works fine. I was just thinking in the future where I may want to upgrade the HDD for instance

ASUS doesn't provide recovery isos for download; but, you can download a ms windows home premium x64 iso (http://msft.digitalrivercontent.net/win/X17-58997.iso) file and do a fresh install, then activate it with your key that comes with your laptop. ASUS drivers for your model can be obtained from ASUS's website (http://rog.asus.com/notebook/15-inch/g55vw/)

I think this 25 GB is for The Recovery disc , when you first recover with the discs it will store it in this 25 Gb partition then install it on the selected partition , i own G75VW , mine is also 100% free

There's no ISO download for the Asus recovery image. You can get the vanilla Windows ISOs as already linked, and then download and install the drivers from the Asus website if you want. Another option is to buy a copy of the restore media from the Asus eStore: http://us.estore.asus.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=5083
