Also as it only happens while running on battery im guessing maybe its a power issue?

ive noticed the frame rate will be 40fps+ for a few seconds then the screen blinks really fast then frames drop to 5fps then a few secons after will jump back on then repeat...

dose anyone know why?

I know that some of the users here have been toying with Throttlestop in an effort to get more consistent performance. Other than that I would make sure that you have the latest drivers for your machine including firmware if applicable.

yeah but why is the framerate fine for a few seconds then the screen blinks then it goes into low FPS? then a few seconds high and low again

To me that sounds like it is switching between a high & low power mode, but that's just a guess.

that's what i was thinking... well somthing along the lines of that , isnt there away to keep it in high power mode while running on battery
I have the G53SW-IX097Z

I don't think it will ever be the same performance level on battery as plugged in because I don't think the battery can offer the same output amperage. However it should not be switching power modes constantly and something like throttlestop may be needed. Basically you should have slightly less performance on battery, but it shouldn't be awful and it shouldn't be constantly switching to the detriment of gameplay. The reason that I recommended drivers & firmware is that this is the type of problem that usually only gets fixed at that level. I doubt there is a setting you need to change because this is not desirable behavior under any circumstances.

Any news on this? I got the exact same problem and the exact same laptop...

When you run a nvidia mobile chip on battery only, PowerMizer throttles down the GPU automatically to low performance settings.

I dont think its PowerMizer because I installed Nvidia PowerMizer Manager and it says that i dont have PowerMizer settings in registry...

still have this problem and i cant seem to fix it , as far as i can remeber it wasnt like this when i first got it..

i could play dirt3 on battery fine but now... i cant play it as the frame rate will be at 50-ish for a while then screen blinks and it drops to 15 for a few seconds then back up....

some people can play crysis 2 on battery and i cant

That tool is incompatible with Vista / Win 7. Every driver from NVIDIA has PowerMizer. :)

Have you tried ThrottleStop? It seems to be solving a similar problem for others.

Yep, sounds like the atypical throttle issue with Sandy lappies.

If it seems to be switching back and forth between power modes (FPS changes not due to change in graphics complexity on screen) then I would recommend sending your laptop in so we can take a look at it.

ive been reading and this issue seems quite common so is it just the G53SW-XN1 that have this problem .. im thinking is a power issue and it only occurs while running nearly any 3d applications maybe its the battery?

PM Mason@Asus your contact info (email, phone number, name, serial number, address, model number) and he can setup an RMA for you.

To the OP and Boxkid, the two with flickering screens, are these models with 3D screens?

You may need to have your LCD cable updated. Also, when you game, do you get ghosting on the models? Also, are you running at 60Hz or 120Hz?

BoxKiD

ive tryed running at both 60hz and 120hz , i havent seen any ghosting..

also the framerate is dropping as the blink occurs so im not sure it problem is the lcd cable ..
*UPDATE*
just to be sure i tested both 60hz & 120hz blinking is still occurs with Fps drop down to 10ish then after a few secs will go back to normal then the process will repeat its self

also i can only change the hertz by right clicking on the desktop and selecting screen resolution
cant change it in the nvidia control panel

Chastity@ASUS

to get the 120Hz option, you need to select the PC resolutions, and not the HD ones.

ive noticed the only games that i can play on battery without the screen flashing black then the huge fps drop is Left for dead 2 and dead space 2

would be nice to unplug my ac and play a game
