View Full Version : Usb 3.0?

I have the Asus G74sx that supposedly has a USB 3.0 port on it. But for the life of me I can't figure out which port is the actual 3.0 USB port.

I'm hooking up an external hdd and want to try to get the best throughput as possible and from what I've been told that means hooking it up to the USB 3.0 port.

Which port is it on this laptop that is the 3.0 USB port?

Currently I've got the drive hooked up to one of the USB ports on the left side of the laptop, the port that is closest to the rear of the laptop but when moving files from my internal HDD to the external HDD, i'm only getting throughput of 25MB/s according to the Windows 8 transfer window. From my understanding I should be seeing throughput of like 3.0GB/sec with a USB 3.0 port.

On the right side, it's the one closest to you. If you look at them, it has a blue colored pin support inside. The 3.0 standard requires the blue support for visual identification, since it otherwise looks identical to USB 1.0 and 2.0.

Take a look at http://blogs.howstuffworks.com/2011/04/13/is-usb-3-0-really-faster-than-usb-2-0/ so you won't be too disappointed when you don't get anywhere near that theoretical speed.

http://m.tomshardware.com/reviews/usb-3-uas-turbo,3215-2.html is a good read if you're more technically inclined.

Look at the ports physically, its the one that is blue. Any port that is USB 3.0 is BLUE............. also if you have a portable HDD and it keeps disconnecting, install the USB3.0 driver previous to the newest one.... The newest driver one is faster but disconnects constantly...
