Hi there,

I am about to buy a G46VW-BHI5N43 and hope to place a mSATA drive into it.

I spoke with a chap from HIDEVolution and he told me that "the G46 does come with a mSATA SSD slot, but there is a protruding stub in the way that prevents a full size mSATA SSD to be installed in there. It will only accept a theoretical half size mSATA SSD but no such product exists from a major manufacturer (like Crucial, Samsung, etc). I have seen a few 'no name' half size 16-32GB mSATA SSDs on ebay but we would rather not offer those to our customers."

Is this protuding stub specific to the model that they sell [G46VW-BHI5N43] , or is it prevalent across the whole G46VW range?

Regards, S

HI,
Thank-you very much for the link. Glad to see it can be done, and completely understand why HID would not provide this as an option to their clients.

Check out this thread:

Yes, it's absolutely possible and yes it works great... I'm currently running a Crucial m4 256GB mSATA SSD as the main OS drive and the stock 750GB HDD as D: for storage. Works great, and allows for plenty of affordable storage.

HIDevolution is correct however in saying it is meant for a half sized mSATA SDD... it worked out well on the Crucial but it could possibly be in the way for other cards depending on the chip location. It my case it actually provided a perfect support point just before the memory chips. Also, to install it does require complete disassembly of the laptop to install.

Hidevolution is selling the same models sold at Best Buy, ie they purchase from Best Buy, add $100 and then upgrade to your requests for prices listed on their site. Not a bad way to go if you want an upgraded one now and don't want to do the work yourself.

EDIT: Sorry for the repeated link... I didn't see rewben's first link only his second... my bad ;-)
