View Full Version : G46 HD+ display availability info

_
01-31-2013, 10:01 AM
The first batch of G46s with HD+ displays have just this week been shipped out.

They are available in these regions during Feb (depending on how long it takes to get through customs and get listed on retailer websites):

Taiwan,
Canada,
China,
Finland,
France,
Russia,
Turkey.

If it's not available in your region, I suggest you nag an existing G46 stocking retailer to put an order in from their local ASUS.

Marshall can i ask you to explain the condition about the mSata port in the G46, i found many articles that point that the mSata is(needs) half mSata SSD and also "under the hood" images showed this. Also one m8 explained how to put a regular msata SSD but however can you explain for me more about the real situation and also if we order G46 with HDD and SSD does it mean that it will come with half mSata SSD or ???

What the heck? They shipped to Canada but not to US? The HD+ screens are 1600x900 resolution right?
What kind of Canadian retailer can I order G46VW from?

Thank you Marshall! I did ask for information and got it even though it wasn't exactly what I was hoping for. is there any indication of when the screens will appear in the US market? Is the absence in the US due to Best Buy exclusivity?

As a follow up to this...I can only find this laptop at two retailers in the US. Best Buy (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Asus+-+14%26%2334%3B+Laptop+-+8GB+Memory+-+750GB+Hard+Drive+-+Black/6775259.p?id=1218806576744&skuId=6775259) and HIDevolution (http://www.hidevolution.com/asus-g46vw-bhi5n43-2gb-nvidia-gtx-660m-14.html)

Anywhere else??

This is all I know. We offer it to every market but it's up to the retailers to decide to stock it. I don't know which retailers specifically, you'd best nag our regional Facebook pages to get them to ask their local sales people as Ionly get ship out information from our factory, but it's very likely to be whoever currently stocks G series will also stock the new ones.

In the US it's only BBY and HIDevolution that decided to stock the G46 as far as I know. The BBY exclusivity was only the very first batch in Nov last year.

Hey guys. We are still trying to source the elusive 1600x900 display with eDP display connector, so that we can offer display upgrades for you guys. Asus USA is silent on the availability of the G46 (we can't even confirm if it will have 1366x768 or 1600x900 resolution) to other resellers for now. For background info, we posted this on our FB page a short while back:

Many customers have asked us about the Asus G46VW and the availability of a 1600x900 display panel. LVDS (low voltage differential signaling) is currently the standard for laptop display data connectors. However, Asus decided to use a eDP data connector on the G46. Currently, there are no 14" 1600x900 display panels with eDP (embeded display port) connectors available. Perhaps Asus (and others) have an agreement with a major panel manufacturer like AUO, LG, or Samsung to produce such a display in the future, but for now the only option is the one with standard 1366x768 resolution. If a 1600x900 eDP panel is available in the future, we will surely offer it! Customers that choose to purchase with the standard display can also come back to us to either purchase a 1600x900 panel or have us do the swap.

We'll be able to sell upgrades for those that purchased with the standard 1366x768 resolution once the 1600x900 eDP is readily available. You can either just buy the panel from us, or you can send us your G46 for us to install.

Shoot me a PM and let's see if we can't get ASUS to budge if a few more resellers pressure them.

Great news! A better screen is going to eliminate the weakest pat of this machine. I only hope its a quality panel and not just a slightly higher resolution, as that alone won't be worth the difference. Thanks for the information!

So I can send in my G46 with 1366x768 display and have it swapped for a 1600x900 display? If so, that sounds sweet but I bet the price would be high. Any ideas on how much that would cost + including shipping and all that? Was also wondering if the same thing could be done with the processor.

Yes, Ted @ HIDevolution has said they will be happy to upgrade your g46 for you, cpu, hdd, screen etc. if you are not comfortable to do the upgrades yourself. Once the screens are available I'm sure he'll pass along a price for the upgrade... at this point though nobody has actually sourced one yet. You'll be able to have the upgraded screen before too long I'd bet!

Guys, I spoke to the people at LCDS 4 Less and Screentek, and they were clueless about the availability of a compatible 1600x900 display for the G46. In fact, they asked me to provide them with a model number and photo of the original 1366x768 display so they can check if anything from their existing stock will be compatible. I doubt they'll find anything..

We source our LCDs from Asia. If anyone has them, our supplier will know first, and I will keep you guys posted.

For those who order from us with the standard display, we will offer the 1600x900 panel upgrade at the same price we offer on a new build, along with free 2 way shipping for those in the U.S. In other words, you'll pay the same price for the display upgrade whether you order now or later once the panels are widely available. We added an option on the product page (under display choices) for us to contact you once the upgrade is available - 14.0" HD Antiglare with EWV (1366 x 768) LED Backlight - CONTACT ME when 1600x900 resolution display is available for upgrade quote

Thanks Ted. I find it fascinating that their respective sites specifically calls out the 1600 x 900 panel for the g46 laptop and yet disavow any knowledge of it when directly asked.

Marshall also seems to indicate that the 1600 x 900 panels are available outside of the US (although he specifically said, "G46 HD+ display availability info" so perhaps that is an incorrect assumption on my part...). I'm surprised nobody is able to find any information on them.

Meaning no offense to anyone involved (working as I do in the corporate world I understand this phenomenon all too well...), but it appears that nobody has a clue as to what is actually going on with the G46 and the 1600 x 900 resolution LCD screen. This isn't a great way for anybody to conduct business, let alone a quality company as Asus. I'm a bit disappointed.

But ive decided to buy one from hidevolution since i can upgrade the bad hdd and i5 to i7 along with IC diamond. Hidevolution promised to let me upgrade the screen when it becomes available.

ASUS US will sell any ASUS branded product (except the DVRs, there's licensing issues with that) given sufficient reseller commitment and consumer interest.

If you would like to see the HD+ screen from ASUS create a thread or something visible with a significant number of people and I'll forward it over to the US buyers.

Guys, I have an update on a model number! The 1600x900 HD+ display will most likely be Chimei (CMO) N140FGE-EA2. This model is 1600x900 eDP Matte. We are checking on availability, but no ETA as of yet. There could possibly be another manufacturer that Asus uses, but I am unsure for now.

So just to update people with my experience... I have been contacting all of my favorite E-tailers over the past week. Apparently, they have been trying to get their hands on the elusive G46VW (all flavors) for months now. Asus will not allow them to purchase it because it has not shown up on their "approved" lists of laptops to carry. Maybe because these "E-tailers" are considered Laptop/Notebook Boutique's (resellers?) and not retailers. This just frustrates me as a long time customer of Asus and ruins the customer experience because of how difficult it is for me to purchase something that I would like to have. I am almost to the point of not even wanting any laptop from Asus right now because of this... just my 2 cents.

Ehhh yes and no.

Best Buy still has exclusivity in the US for this SKU (supposed to be over?)

No distributors are stocking the G46 and generally this means there's either a low demand for this product or production issues.

I decided to contact ASUS US purchasing to see if this product will be released to the channel re-sellers, i'll either PM you their response or post in this thread.

Did they tell you if the 900p hd+ panel will be a good display panel with good contrast ratio, srgb coverage like its bigger brother in g55 and g75 because the 900p panel on the m14x is horrible with so low color gamut everything looks dull with no life.

I've changed a laptop screen before but I know it's all very specific and different per laptop.

Well, it can definitely be done (there are FHD 13.3" displays out there), but the question is, will there be a demand for such a panel. It's really all about demand. If a manufacturer like Asus wants it, panel manufacturers will listen and bring a new product to market.

I hope so, because I am tired of the 1366x768 panels...they are almost useless for productive work. 1600x900 is the minimum, and on a 13.3" display is probably the usable maximum. Hoping for the screen resolutions to increase in the near future. I bought my G53SX for the 1080p panel.

This might be because they are releasing the G55 with 670m.. Which makes zero sense to me!

Why put a hotter and older Fermi card in it, if ASUS can use the 670mx instead.

I was really hoping they would add the 670mx  So not sure, if I'm gonna go with MSI.. At least they offer 675mx and 680m which is pretty sweet.

older 670m vs newer 660m is a hard choice. Notebookcheck.de puts the 670m above a 660m but I'm sure the answer isn't that clear along features etc.

Probably because of the power constraints. The 670MX takes more power, from what I understand. Also, they may want to differentiate the G55 from the G75...or it may be in the works, and hasn't been leaked/announced yet.
