you need atk package. it can be downloaded from asus' website:

g74sx -> http://rog.asus.com/notebook/17-inch/g74sx/

after installed and rebooted, you might need to use fn+f4 key combo to turn the backlight on.

edit: sorry i didn't read it properly and thought you're using g55/g75 haha! try to install the atk package there. you might need to disable driver signature enforcement.

alternatively, you can try the latest package from here (http://www.asus.com/supportonly/ATK_package/#support_Download_30). if that still doesn't not work, you can still try to get the w8 versions from g46/g55/g75.

A lot of Windows 7 drivers will work, but you may have to disable signature enforcement to allow them to install on the wrong version of the OS. ATK package does the keyboard lighting. Any other things not working? Welcome to the forums! :)

When I upgraded to Win 8 I found I had the same issues. To my knowledge ASUS hasn't updated the drivers to support Win 8 but found with the exception of much of the fluff they pre-installed (some does and some doesn't) work at all. I found that they had supported much of what you want and or need which will include the backlit keys to work upon boot if you install the drivers and such that are labeled under the G75 Series drivers. Hope this helps.
