Hi everyone,

I am looking to purchase an Asus G55VW for my 16 year old son's birthday!

I have two choices and I am wondering if there are any compelling reasons / pro's or cons to going with one over the other?

The first one is the G55VW-RS71 from a local Microcenter and it is configured with i7 3610QM, 8GB RAM, 750GB 7200rpm HDD, 15.6" FHD and Windows 7 Home Premium.

The second one is the G55VW-DH71online from Computer Upgrade King and it is configured with i7 3630QM, 8GB RAM, 500GB 7200rpm HDD, 15.6: FHD and Windows 8.

The RS71 can be had for $80.00 less than the DH71 but the real questions are, is there a compelling reason to go with the either the 3610QM vs the 3630QM processors?

The RS71 comes with Window 7 Home and the DH71 with Windows 8. Any compelling reason for one OS over the other from a Gaming prospective? I myself have a new Asus N56VZ and Windows 8 seems to boot and operate pretty quickly but the whole new Start Menu / Tile thing I am not crazy about!

750GB HDD vs 500GB HDD is probably no big deal unless one really needs the storage capacity. If one wants a real performance boost there is always the SSD!

So, save $80.00 and be able to take advantage of the local Microcenter quick and easy 15 day test drive and return policy for any possible issues? 3630QM OR 3610QM processor for some reason? Windows 7 Home vs Windows 8 for various reasons? 500GB HDD vs. 750GB HDD?

Any input would be greatly appreciated as I have to decide soon!

Man... decisions, decisions!

The two cpu, only difference is that the 3630 is 100mhz faster, which you may not see any real gains in games etc.
so do you think your son would like the 200gb bigger HDD, or a slighty faster cpu 4,2% or so.
I like windows 8 and got adjusted to it very quickly. and it does boot up faster for me than windows 7 did.
----
if it was me, I would get the 2nd one, you can always replace the driver with a bigger one, or get him an external drive (dont know if the G55 have two drive bays)

here's my humble opinion:
1. cpu - there is not much difference between the two. however i think you should go for 3630qm simply because it's tiny bit 'faster'.
2. hdd - you get less hdd space with dh71 BUT you can always extend it with an external drive.
3. os - if it's mainly for gaming, i think it's ok to run w8. the fast boot in w8 is nice, too. note that if your son is going to have 32gb ram later, w8 is a better option because w7 hp has a limit of 16gb only.
4. goodies - i think you should check this out. from the specs published there is no backpack for dh71.
5. warranty - now, i think you should confirm with cuk about the warranty. from the specs, they are offering 3-year warranty. however, you need to check out the actual process (you ship it or they give you a box to send it in); the advantage of microcenter is that it's near where you stay. be sure to check out their warranty policy as well.

well, i will choose dh71.

and, welcome, good father :)

edit: also note that g55 has 1 msata slot and 1 hdd bay (both sata3 speed). to access the msata slot is a pain (will void warranty). so normally we add a 3rd hdd caddy to replace the dvdrom to use another hdd at sata2 speed :/

DH71 might have thunderbolt not sure though.

I would go with the DH71. If it has the thunderbolt port (not just display - look for the little white and blue sticker next to the port) that adds greater value. Do they have the same optical (DVD) drive? I take it neither has 3D. If either one is 3D ready or even just 3D capable (or "3DTV play" requires a 3D monitor), I would go with that one since gaming would be that more exciting. Considering these additional options would make the extra $80 a good investment. Upgrading the HDD will be easy, if needed at a later time. As a matter of fact, and I am not being biased here, I have the G55VW-DH71 and it has the thunderbolt port and is 3D capable (not to mention the matte, anti-glare screen). Windows 8 is pretty slick and I am liking it for the most part (can do with the RT part though). I can tell you I am very happy with my G55 even though I originally set my sights on the G75VX. Now I am glad I went with the G55(-DH71).

So, I hope that helps a bit.

Good luck,

My DH71 has thunderbolt. I would go with the DH71 just because it is a newer model.
