View Full Version : Upgraded SSD - Samsung 840 Pro vs Plextor M5M

So I upgraded the SSD in my laptop. I was using a Plextor M5M 128gb mSATA SSD / 500gb 7200 RPM HDD. Well I filled up the mSATA rather fast. (I knew I should have gotten a bigger one) Well I was on ebay the other day and noticed someone had some brand new, factory sealed Samsung 840 Pro 512 GB SSD's for $425.00. Almost $100 under newegg. So I picked one up and got it today. Here are the results.

Also keep in mind that I ran these benches while I was booted off of/running off of the Samsung 840 PRO. The Plextor normally ran at about 480gbps read while in use.

This ebayer has one left last time I checked. I can say that these are in fact brand new, factory sealed if anyone wants to pick up the last one.

Edit: He sold them out. He sold 23 of them within a few days.

 a 512 GB SSD will out preform a 128gb mSATA SSD, so nothing special here.

Nice catch you've got there, nice to see people getting good deals. Almost bought a Samsung myself before I went with the Crucial M4 instead, only 256GB; both are outstanding drives. I figure I have enough capacity for now... the good old hard disk can soak up anything I dont feel like loading instantly. Great feeling, isn't it? Gotta love SSDs. ;)

Well I knew the write speeds were going to be significantly faster because the Plextor was only rated for up to 330mbps. I didn't think the read speeds would be this much better though. I figured they would be better, but the 512k and 4k's are significantly faster.

I tried to clone original G75VX HDD to a Samsung 840 Series NON-Pro 250GB but it only gives me a black screen with a pointer arrow that I can move around the screen. Did you do a clean install or did you clone? I also saw the Samsung 840 PRO 500GB for $399.99 USD. Is the difference between the Pro and NON-Pro noticeable in real world use (gaming, photo editing, surfing, etc)? Is it worth the extra $$?

Wow. I was just browsing Best Buy website. With the exception of very few items, I don't see why anyone would ever buy anything from Best Buy. Anyone who does, either does not know about newegg or does not trust ebay. I paid $425 for my ssd and look at what Best Buy is charging.

And to think they are sold out... lol
