Hi. Saw a thread the other day where one guy had problems with his g74sx
had its "explorer not responding" I had the same problems. so I tought it
was my SSD that was the problem.
So Ive been in with contact with corsair trying to get help, so first of all
im going to try it on my desktop soon.

But when I saw that thread I started to think, what if it's not the SSD?
What if its the drivers that is causing the problems on a G74sx.

I solved my "explorer not responding" with reinstalling + new drivers.
But my laptop is still unstable as hell.

It works fine to games most of the times. But It really wants to freeze sometimes.
Like when using internet explorer/steam somtimes. and other programs.
And when it freezes, either its "almost" dead, I try ctrl alt del but the activity window wont show up. It just says something like, loading secure options or something.
But nothing happens. So I reboot.

OR they system dies instant, so only way is to reboot.

Its quite annoying. But im there soon.

Maybe I should try reinstalling IE? or try Firefox.

Some new drivers might fix all these problems maybe.
But will take some time I guess.

Im not saying that it is this way, will try it on my desktop in some days.
and then I will know for sure.

I would give the beta Verde driver in Chastity's thread a shot. It seems to have helped several people on this forum:

Its a nice thread. But doesnt seem to help me very much.
Im not 100% sure if its the drivers yet so.

And my system is just reinstalled.
Shouldnt have these problems.

That is true; that thread is not so much a troubleshooting guide as it is a compilation of the best drivers and firmware. I guess let us know how your test goes if you want to try that first and we'll do our best to help you from there.

I thought I was done with this issue, no more freezes, but yesterday it happened again.
I'm running the 280.19 gfx driver set.

Please reply if you figure out what is causing your freezes man, I will do the same.

Bleh. the explorer is not responding is back again-.-.

All I can find is (going to try to translate it)
"Application error 1000"
The error appeared in the program explorer.exe, version 6.1.7601.17567
The problem was found in the module ntdll.dll, version 6.1.7601.17514

This might be the log causing the freezing. or atleast, this is what happends when explorer freezes.

Also, I have on more variant of the error. saying the exact same thing, but instead of ntdll.dll it's "ASUSWSShellExt64.dll, version 1.1.0.27"

Would be awesome with some help.

EDIT: neonfisk do you use a ssd? cause I do. But im starting to think that some drivers in my laptop might be bugged:P

Im starting to consider if it's something strange with asus ATK drivers?
Would love to hear from Xeromist what he thinks :P.

Im having troubles with freezes, explorer not responding. and some other strange stuff sometimes.

I did a clean install of W7 and ATK and then my "explorer.exe not responding"
problem were gone. But the system was still unstable as hell.
and now its back like I said.

Also another bugg with ATK is that it stopped working without a reason.
So the hotkeys + backelit on the keyboard stopped working.
So reinstalled it again(hotkeys fixed & light)

and the ATK driver made my screen to go to 50% brightness or something,
but I couldnt higher it(because it was showing 100%, but it wasnt)
Did what xeromist said, and reinstalled AGAIN.
(fixed)

So, does Asus know about this? seem's like they should try to fix some stuff
and release a new version xD

Edit: Would like to add that neonfisk seem's to have the same problem, so I'm not alone anyways.

This sounds like it might be related to ASUS WebStorage then. I'm pretty sure it's included with your laptop but if you're not using it then I would just disable or uninstall it. You can remove things from running on startup either through application menus or if they make it difficult just run msconfig from the windows run box. I'd disable anything not absolutely required (you can always enable later) and see if you still get crashes.

If you still get crashes after minimizing startup items then I'd point to either a driver or a lower level service. (The windows service manager can be somewhat daunting to browse because many of the items are cryptic but you can get to it by right-clicking on My Computer and going to Manage. Services will be part of the tree on the left.

Hello!

You need to upgrade to the latest version of ASUSWebStorage3.0.108.222 and Explorer does not crash anymore!

zzz. Computer is still crashing(freezing).
Gonna throw it out the window soon. More fun that way. *RAAAAAGEEEE*
I just hate computers, they never work as you want them to.

also when the computer froze, the ATK drivers got ****ed again. so the backelit+hotkeys isnt working atm.

Bummer :(

Well, as I mentioned I would try to disable everything you possibly can and see if it still has problems. Did you already look in the Windows Event log to see if anything is indicated there?

Actually, one time when it froze there was no indicator what went wrong.
and another time the only thing I found was this

"The device \ Device \ Ide \ iaStor0 has not responded within the specified time limit. "
And I almost 100% sure that this made my computer freeze ONCE

What does it mean when the computer crashes and you cant find any information what happend?
Happend again, so checked all logs in that time range. BUT, didnt find anything usefull at all.

Your SSD may not like the RST driver. May I suggest in seeing if there is a firmware update for your drive, or switch to the MS AHCI driver manually. Or both.

Then what does it like xD? I only installed the IRST because I have problems. But it didnt get worse/better what I can tell so.

I have been in contact with corsair also, but they dont seem to know whats going on either so.
They wanted to replace my SSD but reading what others have said on the forums didnt really make me want to.
Some people got it replaced, but they even got more problems with their new ssd. Havnt read one single post where someone got it
fixed by replacement.

Anyways. I started to think it was the drivers because Neonfisk on this forum also had problems with Explorer not responding. However this were fixed when I uninstalled Asuswebstorage If I remember it right.
but the computer still freezes randomly 2-3 times a day. (which is a improvement, because it froze alot more before)

Well I just bought the G74SX two weeks ago. It just died on me tonight. Running problem free since day one. GPU is dead. Between this and my R3E Black Edition, ASUS are on my crap list in a major way.

I sold a G74Sx-A1 to a customer which had the same issue. What I did:

Formatted
Installed VANILLA Windows 7 SP1
Installed nVIDIA Drivers(from nVIDIA's website (http://nvidia.com/))
Installed Realtek's drivers (from Realtek's website (http://www.realtek.com/downloads/downloadsCheck.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=24&PFid=24&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false#High%20Definition%20Audio%20Codecs))
Installed Intel Chipset Drivers
Installed Intel MEI
Installed USB3 Drivers
Installed ATK Package .10
Installed KB Filter
Installed Card Reader Drivers
Installed BT Drivers

No problems so far and the laptop is fully functional. My guess is that the issue is either with some software installed along the OEM installation or one of the optional utilities I didn't install (they are not needed for proper operation) is causing the problem.

I also have faced this issue until this morning, I try to disable TRIM for SSD by open cmd, then type "fsutil behavior set disabledeletenotify 1".
Until now, there is no freeze any more.

I've had the error that causes freezing, "The device, \Device\Ide\iaStor0, did not respond within the timeout period." The OCZ rep says its because hot plugging is not enabled in the bios for that drive(vertex 3 in my case). I haven't tried it yet but read somewhere there was no hot plugging setting in the bios(G73SW-A1). Gonna check it tomorrow.

Hey guys,
I found this thread while trying to figure out what was wrong with my g74sx-1aty. Yesterday, it crashed so much that it essentially became unusable. It seemed to happen mostly with firefox open but wasn't always. The crashing also occuring after I was done watching a full screened file in windows media player (as in when I escaped out of full screen). I used the recovery partition and it had no effect.

I decided to install a clean copy of win7 home premium. I installed all of the latest drivers from the asus website with the exception of the trackpad, which errored out during installation. Note: the wireless driver was missing so I actually downloaded them from another computer to a flash drive, therefore windows update couldn't interfere with me installing the drivers from asus. So far with heavy usage today, I have yet to have a single crash.

I have installed ccleaner, firefox with adblock plus, dropbox, all windows updates, itunes, and microsoft office.

Last time I had steam and autocad also installed so I can't rule them out as the cause until I reinstall them.

As a side note, I have an intel G2 80gb SSD with trim installed as the boot drive...so I really don't think it's trim. If anyone has a permanent fix, it would be greatly appreciated but maybe this is fixed already.

The latest drivers from the Asus site are old. Go to my Drivers,, etc sticky and update your drivers starting with the wifi. Driver. Also see this http://www.asusrog.com/forums/showthread.php?5126-Any-Kind-of-Lag-and-Atheros-WiFi-Card

chickeninferno

Why would I want to update the drivers if it's working perfectly? Also, my wifi card does not appear to be the atheros card but the wimax card.

Device Manager reads them as:
Intel(R) Centrino(R) WiMAX 6150
Intel(R) Centrino(R) Wireless-N 6150

Maybe I wasn't entirely clear, but as of now this is 2 days of intensive usage without a single crash or hickup at all.

No....you weren't entirely clear.

You first post reads as a long list of problems you've had with your computer, and concludes with a request for a "permanent fix." Someone took the time to read your post and offer a suggestion for optimizing your computer's performance and stability, and you responded rudely, as if insulted by the response to your request.

Should your computer ever not function perfectly and you actually need any help, more clarity and less peevishness will go a long way.

I take a little insult in the fact that I did state
but maybe this is fixed already. as the last words. His response read as a "I read part of this but didn't read the whole thing" followed by a suggestion to use a driver for a wireless card the laptop doesn't even have. It seems that I found at least a temporary fix. If someone knows what the actual problem is and therefore exactly how to fix it, then i would appreciate hearing it.

The first post was mostly to show that
(a) I seemed to have had the same problem
(b) the things I've tried/failed to fix it
(c) how I fixed it and what are conditions I had to fix it
(d) a request for a permanent solution if known

maybe if this is the professionalism of the board, then I should just end it with:

tl;dr I fixed it by a fresh install of non-asus win7.

This was a helpful post for others as this problem is rampant with the g74sx.
