Wow, very strange. I am really starting to wonder if this bench causes degradation to a system. I originally scored a 700. As I ran the benchmark, my score got progressively lower with each run. Ultimately ending with something like 560 points.

Is the score based on time? If so, is a lower score better? Confused.

I think, "degradation" would be a strong word... but it could lower the performance if you're just running it again and again without restarting the system... - a lot of benchmarks performs better after a restart... (not sure with this particular one, just thought it worth mentioning)

Degradation maybe a strong word, but why else would my score drop with each consecutive run?. I have run the bench numerous times with and without a reboot. Trend still evident. And yes, you are correct that some benchmarks want a restart after each run.

- Highest CPU core temp during benchmark was 65C.

This is what I had for system speeds running the bench:

There's absolutely no chance of degradation or anything of the sort. This is technically impossible.

Whatever is currently running on your system affects the score just like any other benchmark. Running processes/services, available ram/ram fragmentation, etc etc all affect the score. Clean restart is always better like most benchmarks.
Most people into benchmarking use a clean and stripped down operating system that's only for this use, for this specific reason.

Zkal17 knows what he's talking about as he's into the benchmarking sport:)

EDIT:@andy83eg: I need more information about your system. You are hitting somekind of bug that causes both the encoding and hence the multitasking tests to utterly fail in your system.

Do you extract the application under a path that includes Bahasa Melayu characters?

I ran it a few times with the updated version, and it was 3 points faster lol, did some adjustments on the OC, also I ran it on a different HDD WD Velociraptor with my score down in upper 500 instead of 707 with my SSD. so no degradation for me, also i cleared everything in the background and ran it in 1920 Resolution. The number of cores you have on your CPU 4 with no HT makes the world of difference. Your score is quite good actually.

Most certainly not degradation of hardware. It is as you have found out not a benchmark that can be run time after time without a reboot. That is the same as most benchmarks. They run best the first time you run it. There are a whole heap of factors at play when benching anything on a PC, background processes are the key.

Indeed! All three tests have file reads and writes so SSD speeds them up a lot! On HDDs I suggest defragmentation of the drive RealBench resides on. Although it won't reach the speed of SSD, it would help all tests!

-- Fixed typo that allowed possible Image Processing score exploit.
-- Fixed bug that allowed possible Multitasking test exploit.

Thanks for reply dude.

Not sure what is going on. I have run it with and with out reboots, it doesnt seem to make a difference. The last run scored around 411. I even went as far as to close most everything running in system tray. I also went as far as to lax my memory speed/timings in case that was the problem. Trend still evident.

I can see consistently getting the relatively same low score, but not getting lower with each run. Very strange.

System specs are my sig. There is something I will check out.

EDIT:
Wow, this is getting very weird.

I thought maybe it was because Realbench was running off a HDD installed. I moved the realbench folder to c:\ and scored the lowest yet, 394! I had also set to run as 'administrator '.

Other than that funky stuff, the PC seems to be running proper. No other indication. Any other suggestions?

HiVizMan
06-09-2013, 08:55 AM
xmanrigger I get the same thing with version 1.0 each run regardless of reboot or not the final test is worse than the run before. Got all the way down to 300 before I stopped. Will try the latest version 1.5 I think it is and see how it goes.

Nodens
06-09-2013, 12:10 PM
@xmanrigger:

Well the tests are pretty straightforward. Timer starts, test is run, timer stops, result is calculated. So if the score is low, the test simply runs slow on your system. Now why does that happen? Without examining your system I can not say unfortunately.

Do you see one specific testing being low (compare with other people's scores) if yes let me know which one. Maybe you're hitting somekind of bug in one of the testing subprograms (GIMP, Handbrake, vlc video player, 7zip) although you have similar specs with my system..on SSD my development system scores about 685ish (clocked at 4.5) and while running several things in the background/not optimized at all. Subsequent runs cause lower scores most of the time but a few points off..I've never gotten it to score so low.

You can also collect a few logs from your system and send them to me via PM so I can examine the state of your system.

Specifically:
msinfo32 : File>export> save as msinfo32.txt
dxdiag: Save All Information> dxdiag.txt
hijackthis:http://sourceforge.net/projects/hjt/ >scan and save logfile

Provide all 3 so I can see if there's something obviously wrong with your system.

Also check your event viewer for any errors. Things like disk subsystem timeouts etc etc.

@HiViz: You can replicate this after reboot? Or you're talking about running it consecutively without reboot? Also which score lowers? All of them?

HiVizMan
06-09-2013, 12:25 PM
I replicated it after multiple reboot. Once I had my best time - my first run - every rerun thereafter even at much higher CPU clocks was worse for the last test. My first two tests gained inline with my increased frequency of the CPU.

Nodens
06-09-2013, 01:03 PM
Ok found it! Another typo gah..caused 7zip to recompress the previous archive it had made because it ws not getting deleted. Meaning any consecutive run on that test would always get slower because it was adding up, the previous archive. Pulled out 1.05. Uploading 1.051 in a bit.

Thanks xmanrigger and HivizMan for finding this out!

Your score is perfectly legit. As I told you in the PM (saying this here as well because of score validity and report), OS tweaks are not considered cheats. BTW: About the benchmark being slower after a reboot... If you've just rebooted then Windows is busy in the background. Various programs check for updates and other tasks are starting up. If you wait a while and do nothing until all background tasks have died and then run the benchmark, it will give better results.

I did wait. That is what I said. I did the second run after a fresh reboot and win7 and services finished loading. Numerous times. Will do a couple more runs.

Still cant score what I initially scored at 4700mhz. Another thing, this 3930K doesnt clock as well on this RIVF as it did on the P9X79 Deluxe. On the Deluxe, the 3930k would run all day long at 5200mhz/1.51v, with only CE1 and Speedstep disabled. No additional settings were required.
Now, I havnt even been able to boot Win7 at 5200mhz even as high as 1.58v and with LLC at high. 5100mhz now requires 1.568v, and hardly stable.

This could be due to difference in UEFI firmware with these 2 boards. But it could also mean that your CPU has degraded:(

EDIT: Btw if you want to compete for top scores, I suggest you make a new Win7 installation on a separate partition or drive and tweak it. Only install drivers on it, strip down all non-mandatory services (Disable firewall, defender, system restore, indexing etc etc ) and have at it..always rebooting after each run:) I wonder if HiVizMan has a stripped down Win7 image ready for benching..I know he has an XP one heh.

EDIT2: I have not actually tested RB on XP 64 but it's quite possible that it runs properly on it. If someone wants to try and compare performance with 7..in theory it should not be faster if both are stripped to the same level because of 7's much better thread scheduler.. but it can't hurt to try it.

Thanks for reply Nodens.

I hope it is the difference in BIOS. I cant think of anything I could have done to cause it to degrade in the last while. I am however running these clocks: 1200-0.848v / 4700-1.32v. Is that 1.32v going to do it? I was playing with higher voltages running different clocks on the Deluxe. It seemed to coincide with the move to the RIVF.

About a stripped OS install. Do mean just install component drivers (chipset, VGA, sata....) and dont do any Win7 updates? I do have a HyperX SSD sitting I could use.

Stripped OS is an OS that has the bare minimum working or enabled. I run my benching OS with only 8 - 13 processes or services running.

And let me warn you this sport is addictive once you are down that slippery slope you will be taking part in my OC and benching challenges with the rest of us loons.

So does that include any Win7 updates? Also, what are the bare minimum services that have to be running? Or is it different machine to machine? Sorry for all the questions, but if I am going to do it, I want it right.

And let me warn you this sport is addictive once you are down that slippery slope you will be taking part in my OC and benching challenges with the rest of us loons.

And, when you're too busy to bench then you're gonna have serious withdrawal symptoms... :D

Oh, I am well aware of the addiction. To the point it was effecting my real world job a few years ago. Been benching for years. Burned up a couple video cards and a couple CPUs in the process. I ruled the GTX580 air/wc record for 3DM11 at EVGA for quite some time. That was until I moved to the GTX680s. Great competion over there. Sadly, score boards were neglected and I lost interest there. I did join a HWBOT team a while back, but at the time, I was having issues with some of the benches and had little help. Again, lost interest.

It is that I have always done it on my main machine or a new build after complete install to test. So a stripped OS wasnt an option. Thought about it a few times, but never got around to it. Now I have a spare SSD kicking around, why not?

Finally, I moved the Realbench folder to my OS SSD from HDD. Scores a bit higher. I wish I had it there for the 737 score at 5100mhz. I was only able to get one successful run at 5100mhz. As I said in earlier post, I cant seem to clock the 3930K as high or as stable on the RIFV as I could on the P9X79 Deluxe. Anything above 4900mhz now needs a sh*tload of juice. I was using as high 1.6v+ on the Deluxe for 5300mhz. Eons later, I was still able to hit 5200mhz-1.52v all day long. I could play BF3 or bench forever at 5200mhz. It was rock solid. Man, I was as high as 1.58v just trying to get 5100mhz stable on the RIVF. Other than that, sweet board.

706 @ 4700mhz - After moving to SSD. I was around 690 running from HDD.

My friend benching should be for fun, I stress this over and over again. I have seen some friends hurt themselves and their families in pursuit of those boints. Here at ROG we look after each other in the team. Go have a read at some of the in house challenges that we hold here. They are pretty long winded threads I warn you but you will see how each one helps the other out. There are guides posted in the threads or pm'd to competitors. We are a team in the true sense of the word. At the end of the day we do it for the fun of it, because we love the hardware and we like to compete. Fun first, and the boints will come.

So true!

Although it's been more than a few years ago I remember when I was on the XtremeSystems 3Dmark Team. Those were some great times. I laugh when I think of some of the crazy stuff we did. TEC cooling was popular, manual volt mods and phase change ruled, and the level of teamwork was awesome. Oppainter, DDtung, eva2000, LardArse (Shamino)...some real quality guys.

Alas, then a real job and kids came along...and you know the rest.

But I love threads like this that rekindle that passion and bring more guys into the hobby.

You are certainly right. And I have had tons of fun with it thru the years. It is like you said; very addictive. I love competition. Next to builds, it was my PC crack. ....pufff.....pufff
I was hardcore gaming for the longest time. Then got back into overclocking and benching. What kind of sucks about it now, is since I laid off gaming a bit, I have had better machines to game on now than ever, but spend the time tweaking and clocking instead. I still get into BF3 good and hard some nights, but not as I did back in the early BF2 days. My machine is almost a waste for what I do now. The most intensive thing it does is either benchmarking or gaming. I get almost the same satifaction building and tweaking a bad-ass machine than I do using it. For that matter, I get as much satisfaction watching my son gaming and wringing the power from a PC I built, than actually playing the game myself.

Maybe I will look at some of the completions here and join in a few.

Cheers

First tip:
Only 1 monitor should be enabled (disable others). Set resolution as low as possible (800*600?). Run the test. Set resolition to 1920x1080. start cpu-z ith cpu tab and with memory tab. Take screenshot (hit printscreen) than open paint paste screenshot (ctrl+v). Cut out the part that contains cpu-z and the REALBENCH windows.

Second tip:
Write down your score above the image! (its difficult to read it)

As i seen, they won't sell the FX-9590 as a regular product... you can only find it built in some systems...

Also, I don't think that it's a new product, it's rather some pre-selected FX-8350s... (may be wrong on this though) - and reaching 5GHz on an FX-8350 isn't so big deal... if you're lucky on the silicone lottery, of course (there is coming in the pre-selection)

Gotta hand it to Nodens. The encoding test really taxes the CPU. Running at 5GHz is a no no for my deficient cooling. No other choice but to lower this baby to 4.5GHz to avoid throttling. Not bad for a 4.5GHz run. :p

When I install it Norton tells me that gimp.exe is bad and automatically removes it.

It's a false positive. This probably happens because Norton checks for the checksum of the file against the commonly distributed Windows GIMP binaries while the version RealBench includes is compiled from scratch by me for optimizations. Just exclude RealBench's folder from scan (that should also help with the scores as the AV won't check all file I/O while the tests are running;)).

I assure you there's no chance of malware on RealBench as long as you download from official ASUS ROG links (or mine if it's an urgent update that has not yet propagated to ASUS download space:))

Although there is a competitive side to all this with the points and what not, we must never forget that benchmarking should be fun and a nice way to learn about our systems and how to tweak it. We hope this isn't your last entry either, my friend.

Done as per your request,

I will see if i can get it higher, i think i can get more out of the CPU as i have ran it at 3750 before currently i am just getting it settled into its new case and ive not got the cooling spot on yet so i am running at around 44oC on Air when i usually get it down to about 32oC so once i have figured out what is causing the extra heat i can look at getting those extra MHz.

Wow Samual, very nice score with that 3770K.

Detleg and Arne, I am coming for you guys. Get those multipliers warmed up.

Was going to give it a shot last night, but was playing Jonny body man and motorcycle mechanic. Changed out the entire front end on my son's Ford F150, and had to remove my rear wheel on my bike to bring it in for a new tire. Pain in the ass on my bike as I have to remove the exhaust to get at the axle bolt. Got 9500km out of last tire. Man, I can buy 2 quality car tires for the price of one rear motorcycle tire.
Good news is, we got his truck together and road worthy once again. He had a fender bender in the spring and totaled the front end. He got lucky and found both front fenders, front clip with grill, and lights for $50! All in one piece. Steering box was $200.

Anyways, great scores guys. Hope to give ya a run for your money.

I would have thought that adding a 100MHz would improved my score more. But on the upside I found out that my system is rock stable at higher overclock and running idle at 38C and at 100% load it was 71-75. Would it be safe to try for a 4900MHz? Hi Chef,

It's not the temps that are dangerous it the voltage. Thats how I killed my 3770k. Your computer will throttle if the temps become to high. Keep the voltage below 1.55 and you should be fine.

I have some of those items, if drive speed is a factor than RAID may help? I quit using raid since SSD's are so fast I decided it's not worth the trouble anymore.

Holy Batman****!

Congrats gentlemen. Elete new club I see.; The 800 Club.

Not sure I got the creds to join. Cant seem to break 2400. Will give it my best shot though. 2392 is best I could bench. Maybe I will do the 'stripped drive' thing yet. What OS when running stripped?

HiViz and/or Arne. Care to share your memory settings?

Cheers, and looking forward to membership.

Has anyone tried a RAMDisk yet?

Graphic card used 9600 GT
Memory Timings 10-11-10-33 T2
OS used Win7 no SP1
CPU @ 52 x 100
SSD 840 Pro

It is my view that Windows8 will be more efficient in this benchmark. I did one or two runs on Windows8 and was quite impressed with what I saw, but since it is my day to day rig I did not clock it further.

Arne will break this score quite easily, his system is running way more efficiently than mine. I think his ram is dialled in way better and his processor is clocked lower than mine. Wait until he ups the multi by 1 and cleans up. I predict his score to be 826 - 833 range based on his efficiency numbers I have worked out from this bench.

Nice score HiVizMan!:D

I have my work cut out for me!.... Tried to join the 800 club tweaking OS....but no admittance LOL

799 ---- Arne Saknussemm ----- i7 3930K ----- 5100MHz ----- 16GB@2448MHz ----- RIVE

21575

Have to sort out an ice bath for that extra 1 on the multi.....

Arne your efficiency is way better than mine very well done.

What OS are you on?

Well, I'm on Win 8 Pro 64 bit...Not sure I can accept the well done as I'm kind of thrashing about in the dark with RAM timings.....learning a lot LOL (which is most of the fun really) Have plenty more to experiment with....

Thing is Win 8 on BIOS 4102 takes quite a bit of voltage above 5100 for my system.....not sure whether to try Win7 on 2003 despite the loss of efficiency since in the past I needed a lot less voltage (unless my CPU is degrading!)

Plenty to experiment with....havent got to secondary timings or tertiary yet....or pi ram.....

I will crack 800 though......:D

You want a set of Pi ram? Got three sets. Promised one to Myk and you can have one if you want.

I am on Win7 and my efficiency is way below yours. When I ran the bench at the same frequency on Win8 I got about 12% more efficiency.

Hmm....that's a lot of difference......maybe I will just have to take the voltage hit and do some ice bathing for the RADs then........

Might have to RAID my SSDs too or try a RAM disk.....the possibilities are eeeeeennndless hahaha!

He-he, talking about efficiency - I used 2x2GB of PI ram and I'm only 4 points behind Arne, with 100MHz less on CPU...

Last night could not go to sleep before trying my 4x4GB Dominator Platinums... used them at the same 2400MHz, CL9 - guess what? I've got the exactly same 795 score! The CPU was at 100x50 in both cases, everything else was the same too... I'm on Win 7 64-bit Pro, fresh install, with all the updates on... SSD is the same Samsung 840 HiVizMan mentioned...

OK, guys, I'm joining the 800 group! :D

First, I did a run at 5100MHz (100x51):

809 ----- Zka17 ----- 3970X ----- 5100MHz ----- 16GB @ 2400MHz ----- Asus Rampage IV Extreme

21578

Then, I restarted in Diagnostic Mode, set RealBench to Realtime in Task Manager and turned off explorer.exe:

814 ----- Zka17 ----- 3970X ----- 5100MHz ----- 16GB @ 2400MHz ----- Asus Rampage IV Extreme

21579

Very nice Zka - see it did not take long to beat my score.

Out of interest what OS are you using?

Thanks HiVizMan! Wondering how long until you or someone else go higher... :D

So, the details:
OS: Win 7 64-bit Pro - all updates installed
SSD: Samsung 840 Pro 128GB
RAM: Corsair Dominator Platinum 4x4GB 2400MHz 9-11-11-31 2T (XMP settings)
BIOS settings: XMP, 100x51, all CPU power saving options are OFF - everything else is on AUTO!

Nice one Zka17!!

I can't find those options on Win 8...to set realtime etc......will have to try win 7 despite the performance loss in some ways might be better in others....

Would the extra cache on your CPU make much difference?
