Summer Sizzler

21867

Well folks summer is nearly upon us here in the Northern Hemisphere. And what that means is time to break out the barbeque and have a good time. Or, we could cook up some really mean benchmarks to run in the heat. I like that last idea better.

So let’s introduce to you all the benchmarks for this latest challenge here on ROG.

Top of the list is our very own ROG Realbench. The only version allowed for the challenge is the version that will be available for download here in the challenge thread.
Next on the agenda is FireStrike – this is a new benchmark from the same guys who developed out third bench 3DMark06.
The last benchmark on the list is CineBench R11.5.

The Sizzling fun starts right now and ends Monday morning the 29th July.

Right are you ready for the rules? I hope so because here they are.

1. Submissions must satisfy the HWBot rules for submission
2. ROG Realbench must have 3 CPUz tabs open - CPU, Motherboard and memory tabs must be shown
3. Only ASUS motherboards may be used
4. Any make of graphic card may be used. Single card only.
5. X79 X or K processors are capped at 4.7 GHz
6. Hasewell processors are capped at 4.9 GHz
7. Ivybridge processors are capped at 5GHz
8. Sandybridge processors are capped at 5.1GHz
9. Any CPU with only 4 cores including HT may have an additional 100MHz CPU speed - 3570K for example.
10. And LGA 2011 CPU with only 4 cores may have an additional 200MHz CPU speed - 3820 for example.
11. AMD processors are uncapped and have no speed restrictions.
12. Above ambient cooling for CPU and graphic cards only.
13. Single graphic card submissions only.
14. Photo must accompany your first submission and any subsequent submissions made with different hardware.
15. Each submission must have the official Summer Sizzler back ground which was once again produced by our very own Chris.
16. The same hardware must be used for all four benchmarks.

Bonus Points
5 Bonus Points per week for each of first four weeks cut off is 9am Monday mornings GMT. It is therefore possible for someone to score a perfect 100.
Just to recap, the point of the challenge is to have fun. If a result is too good to be true then it most probably is. We bench because we enjoy it, we bench for fun. When benching is no longer fun then stop.

Download the benchmark here (http://hwbot.org/benchmarks/videocard)

Use only this version of Realbench

ROG Realbench well you know where to get it. Look up.

Check out the Realbench (http://rog.asus.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?156-ROG-RealBench) league table too.

Thanks HiVizMan for keeping us benching the fun way....and chrs for the art work. And my CPU sends a special thanks for the 4.7 cap....with the heat arriving here in earnest I was afraid it would be sizzle and pop!

Same OS for these or is it a windows smorgasbord?

5. X79 processors are capped at 4.7 GHz
8. Sandybridge processors are capped at 5.1GHz

A little wine post if you allow me:
X79 CPUs are expected to be 6core samples for sure so....
Would you guys let to the poor creatures (3820 owners (me)) to play within SB CPUs freq restriction?
/wine off

PS Single card means single GPU?

Getting haswell to run at 4.9 on ROG Realbench is a huge challenge. But I'll give it my best shot.

Menthol
06-26-2013, 12:13 AM
Dartmaul,
9. Any CPU with only 4 cores including HT may have an additional 100MHz CPU speed - 3570K for example.
I believe you at least get 4.8, I have no complaints if it's more.
Your second question, single card = single or dual GPU needs clarification for sure
I won't be able to make first week submission as my gear will be in transport to a new location, second and 3rd week, I need a new GPU

Menthol
This 9th paragraph probably means not cores but threads. 3570K is i5 and has no HT. That means 4c/4t.
It's only about compensation HyperTreading impact.

HiVizMan
06-26-2013, 07:29 AM
Dartmaul and Menthol I will amend rules to answer both questions. But to give an answer here too, 4 Core X79 a frequency increase is acceptable but no quad channel memory - and single card submissions only with above ambient cooling. So no Dry Ice or Chilled water and certainly no LN2.

On that note - if you guys would like a on-going running leader board with a few select benchmarks in the anything goes category I would be willing to go that route for a bit of fun. I do think the current Futuremark threads sort of cover those bases anyhow.

Dartmaul
06-26-2013, 09:39 AM
4 Core X79 a frequency increase is acceptable but no quad channel memory
So if I'd like to run the CPU at 4.9 I have to use dual channel?
And single card means single card, I guess...
Do you guys have any GTX690/HD7990?)

HiVizMan
06-26-2013, 11:34 AM
Dart single card in this case means a single core too :)

Dartmaul

For me the gimp part took the most of the time. Whole run took like 10-12 mins

HiVizMan
06-26-2013, 02:41 PM
The Realbench should not take that long. 300 secs in total for a good OC. Each test about 100 - 150 secs.

Change to the rules, Firestrike Extreme is only for paid version of the benchmark. So the bench is not just Firestrike. I need to think about this a bit as I want guys to get points for their benching.

I personally would prefer to bench the Extreme version, but not all have that benchmark, or want to buy it. I did not realise that HWBOT now have only paid for benchmarks on the BOT.

Graphic Driver not approved is not an issue for this challenge.

I have the paid version already got it on offer and discounted for having the previous version....so I'm good to go for the comp......though I didn't realise Extreme was not on the vanilla version...the fact it's pay for points at the BOT is a bit meh...and if anyone objects here I'm fine with leaving it out in that sense....

Guys, I just had my first look to the thread. Too much info for me to digest so quickly. First I have to take a good look to the rules, hardware limits and then to the benchmarks. Unfortunately, I have no idea what is the different versions of HWBot or extreme or .... Anyway, the imprtortant thing is that we are here alive and kicking :D. Vizman, thanks for preparing the playground for us and have fun to all of you guys.

If I understood correctly all k CPUs are capped to 4700G. So my 3770k is allowed up to 4700k? Same clock goes for Haswell 4770k and X79s CPUs? IVYs, Haswells capped to 5.0 and 4.9 respectively, but only for the non k models. Firestrike is a game inside the new 3dmark and we have to buy it? Can I get it from Steam? One last thing, when the first week finish?

Each Monday 9am GMT is the end of each week.

Each CPU class has been individually specified. LGA2011 processors X and K are in one class.

Haswell is in one class
Ivy the same
SB the same
and AMD has its own.

RIVE 3930K @4700MHZ WC, Corsair Dominator @ 2133 factory settings, ASUS 7970 MAtrix P @ 1220 core 6600 memory

And my same old rig only with the ASUS 7970 MATRIX PLATINUM Custom Cooled by RAJA
OK RAJA may not of installed the cooler but it does a very good job for a factory cooler

And Haswell is most certainly not 4.9GHz if you check the rules out, unless I had another OAP moment.

I am running a water cooled SLI system and I am not tearing it down to remove a card after the grief I experienced earlier this spring. I guess you can count me out. For Fox Creek, oil well.

Welcome aboard Henk, here in Greece we also have the coldest summer ever. Cold winds blow from North East far away from Japan. Scientists already gave a name. They call it Mitsubishi airconditioner

Thanks man. Couldnt find it for the life of me. Where is the original link?

And just to be clear about CPU speed caps. The 4.7 cap for X79, how much over 4700mhz, if at all, is allowed if using bclk to assist clocking? It is too hard to get it right at 4700. Say 10mhz over at most? Just asking. Havnt actually done the clocking yet.

EDIT: Also, to be clear. It was mentioned I only to disable SLI in NCP to be eligible to participate. If I remove SLI bridge and disable, is that good enough? Or is there more I need to do. I have a custom loop cooling my two GTX680s. I am not the least bit interested in removing one.

Chino if your Firestrike is still crashing let me know i found a fix :)

Please post all fixes and tweaks here in open thread for all mate. That is the purpose of these challenges so that we all get to expand our skill set and knowledge base. :)

5MHz is the max over the limits.

You just need to disable via nVid control panel. The GPUz will show us anyway. And to be blunt I know what ever single score will be within 2% in any case so if a score is too good to be true then it most probably is. No worries if you make a booboo unintentionally we are here for the fun of it.

xmanrigger
07-01-2013, 10:54 AM
Now GPUz is mentioned. No worries. I just want to be clear before I start so it isnt all a waste.

The is ROG not HWbot. Please specify Officials Rules in OP as to what needs to be displayed in screenshots. I had a hard enough time just finding the background! LOL. Again, I dont want to put in the time and effort for an invalid submission.

So this is it? Screenshot with 3 CPUZs mobo/cpu/mem, and GPUz?

Thanks HiViz. I guess 5mhz is fair enough. It is that I havnt actually got at it yet and dont know where frequencies will lay. I want to be legit. No funny sh*t here. This is all in fun for me, as gaming. Cheating to win isnt my idea of fun. Takes the 'sport' right out of it.

if you get an error like this....
22558
close that window-- then another window from 3dmark opens close that one too--leave the main 3dmark window open do not exit steam or 3dmark-- since the driver crashed, your oc is gone, check gpu-z apply your oc again with your fav tweaker, on the main 3dmark page go back to tests (on top) run it again. viola also make sure you add all 3dmark related programs to the Nvidia CP .
hope that helps

You can bench at any frequency as long as you do not go beyound the cap. So one would be 200MHz higher than the other two as long as it was below the cap.

What settings for 3DM06, firestrike, and Cinebench? I see from screenies just the CPU test in Cinebench?

Here are some tips for 3Dmark06

Most important thing is have your screen resolution set at the correct resolution, in other words the same resolution as specified by the benchmark itself.
Ram does not make much difference here
CPU core speed and VGA core speed rule here
LOD is dependant on graphic card type used. You will need to find what LOD works best for you.

Have all your tweaks and in OS overclocking dialed in automatically if you can.
The benchmark responds differently to OS and graphic card drivers - test to see what works best for you.
SSD works better than mechanical drive.
If you are using a mechanical drive after each benchmark defrag the drive.
You only have one run of the benchmark per post. Reboot after each run.
XP users can get a small boost in CPU scores using a tweak - but may take a hit compared to other OS in GT2
XP CPU tweak - open the benchmark - let it sit there for a minute - set afinity to one core CPU - select the CPU test 1 - start CPU test 1 and let it run for 30 seconds - abort CPU test 1 - set all test in benchmark - set affinity to all cores - run benchmark. Will give you 300 + 600 points extra.
Play around with your graphic performance settings, extreme performance might not be as good score wise as high performance so test.

@Xmanrigger:

You should check out the rules at HWBOt, But its like this:

GPU oriented bechmark tests =>3DMark06 and 3DMark Firestrike:
- CPU-Z Tab: CPU: showing Processor and Clock Speeds
- CPU-Z Tab: Memory: showing DRAM Type, amount and timings
- CPU-Z Tab: Mainboard: showing your Motherboard and BIOS info
(according to HWBOT rules this is actually only manditory when using IGPU, in other causes its a good custom to show it anyways)
- GPU-Z Main Tab: showing GPU Type, BIOS, RAM and Clockspeed

CPU oriented benchmarks => Realbench and Cinebench:
- CPU-Z Tab: CPU: showing Processor and Clock Speeds
- CPU-Z Tab: Memory: showing DRAM Type, amount and timings
- CPU-Z Tab: Mainboard: showing your Motherboard and BIOS info

Mind you al benchtest have their own stresspoints on uyour system, so the al need to be dialed in for that particular benchtest.

Have Fun!

after you enter it once, even after the next reboot just click on the pull down window and select it again, so you will have only enter it once, even after shutdown it stays saved

What is the general idea/rule with regards to the weekly bonus, you a new post for each bench? And post them all in one post?

The weekly bonus is to reward those who keep at it, in other words it is a kind of incentive to keep benching. The purpose of the challenge is to teach our members the different benchmarks, help them to become better OCers and better benchers.

So really it is up to each individual if they want to participate. It would be hoped that each week there would be some improvement in one bench or more. The way to to submit ideally is to post all the benchmarks in one post. Even if two are not improvements. The reason is simple, it makes it easier for us to track. You can simply submit one bench if you like but it must be with the same hardware and within the limits of the cap.

Last night I tried the newest Nvidia driver, the 320.49 with the NvidiaInspector from that link HiVizMan posted... When I'm opening the Nvidia Inspector, it notifies me about some kind of error, but then I can continue - does this happening to anyone else?

The only difference that matters with LOD is the score. If there is no difference in the score but the benchmark shows its effects - not important. Increase or decrease in score is key.

Is there a new leaderboard somewhere? The scoreboard in first post hasnt been updated for some time.

Would changing LOD not be a cheat? It is a modification to software. That would be the same as if I found some way to modify Realbench or Cinebench for a better score. Furthermore, is there any way to detect the use of the tweak?

Just wondering and not whining. I thought this was about pushing hardware, not tweaking software. Oh, and having fun.

We are dealing with hardware, not software. Tweaking hardware settings for optimal efficiency is what I thought we were trying to accomplish. Not tweaking synthetic software. Allowing software tweaks opens up a whole new can of worms.

Level field means everyone is using same, un-modified apps. I can see using driver tweaks, but using an app to modify the code (or similar) of a bench is essentially a hack.

Anyways, just my two cents. Happy benching.

HWBot rules apply, LOD is a driver tweak :)

Modifying the code in the app is very much cheating tho.

Finding the limit of your hardware doesn't take very long, if no other tweaking/optimizing was allowed benchmarking and competing in benchmarking would be really boring. And it would all be about who cound afford the best hardware. Competitions wouldn't exist, just compare spec's instead, it'd be the same thing.

The tweaking brings in a whole new dimension to it, and it makes knowledge/skill level highly relevant, and it's really really fun learning new stuff and improving scores. You should join hwbot, thinkin you'd like it ;)

To be blunt you thought wrong. :)

What we are trying to do is build capacity as bencher's and tweakers. Many of the guys here playing in my challenges also bench for the ROG Supreme team. They are competing in a global league of over 30 000 participants. Benching and benchmarks at that level of competition is as much about system optimisation for each specific benchmark as per hardware set up. Each individual here has the right to decide to what level they will engage with, OS tweaking, system optimisation and hardware set up. The challenge is open to all who own ROG or ASUS motherboards. They do not have to be part of the ROG OC Supreme Team, nor do they have to tweak if they do not want to. It is about learning stuff and having fun too. Both is good, but either or is also just peachy to me.

As to the statement that we are dealing with hardware and not software - well here you are wrong again. But this is a common misconception and I hear it quite often when folks are first getting into the sport. OS optimisation, LOD settings and all the other legal ways we can set up a particular benchmark is a skill that requires huge amounts of time and effort to work out. The benching community collectively decides what is legal and what is not. Mid Mapping for example is deemed correctly to be a cheat. LOD is not. The why there is a distinction is a debate that was had many years ago and can be found on many enthusiast forum circa 2008/2009 if you are interested.

So to cap up. We play my challenges by the rules that I decide are applicable. In this case because of the stated purpose of the challenges - help ROG OC Supreme improve their skill set - those rules for submission include the HWBOT rules.

This is not a debate. :p

It's cool, Arne! Maybe this weekend we're gonna have a big battle in benching...

For some reason, I'm not able to produce any significant results in 3DMark06 either...

Look to your OS ...

I have tried WinXP 32 bit, but not too much luck... true, it was with the GTX670... and just tried one driver...

Det, very nice scores and nice system
Arne, what bios on your Titan's, bios can make a big difference, the TI bios eliminates the boost and runs at constant frequency which helps more in the older benches that don't stress a Titan enough to keep the boost up, no CPU, oh so sad, hope it gets replaced soon

Good question.....http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?33942-Rip-3930k&country=&status=

(http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?33942-Rip-3930k&country=&status=)But as you can see above I wont let a little thing like having no CPU stop me from posting in the Summer Sizzler!!

Thanks for the reply and explanation HiViz. And you are right. You started the competition-you make the rules. No further discussion required.

Not trying to argue the point, just my two cents. If HWB allows LOD, well, I guess it is legit. I can see being allowed to tweak the OS. But when a bench or it's results are modified in any form, that in my opinion compromises it. Ultimately defeating the purpose of the benchmark.

As far as HWB goes, I did join a few years ago. I was running into issues with some bench submission requirements, and with being busy with work and and getting little to no help, I lost interest over there. I just stuck to mainstream benches around a few forums.

Cheers
