Hello. I bought a g750 from amazon, but instead of running a gtx 780M as announced, its runs a 770M.
(I'm complaining to the website, but I doubt they will actually send me the notebook I asked for)
I wanted as much gaming power on a laptop as possible, and I was deluded to notice that with 16gb of ram, it couldn't run far cry 3 on ultra smoothly. Framerate was low, and commands responded late.
In case I'm stuck with this laptop (which is not giving me any problems at all apart not having the 780M I thought it would have), I wanted to make the best out of it.
I'm no expert, that's why I'm asking this forum: what can I do to improve the gaming performance of my pc? Will extending the RAM to 32 GB help? Can I upgrade the graphics card to a 780M?
Any suggestions are welcome, regarding both software and hardware.

Maybe I'm wrong or missing something, but I didn't think the 780m version of the G750 had even been released yet.

G750JH -> 780M
G750JW -> 765M
G750JX -> 770M
which is your model?

16GB of RAM is more than plenty, you will see no benefit from adding any extra.

Above 8gb, the amount of ram has NO effect whatsoever on gaming performance. Amazon, along with a LOT of online vendors, is incorrectly stating that their g750s havea 3gb 780m, which doesn't exist. What they actually have is the 770m. If you need a 780 now, return the laptop and get an msi or a sager/clevo, otherwise no, besides over clocking there is no way to get a noticeable fps increase in games.

Strangely enough I re ran far cry 3 today and it works perfectly. Wierd. And it sucks that I cant upgrade the graphics card, nor get better performance with more ram. Anyone has tweaks to the nvidia software or any other suggestions that might help?

I overclocked my GTX 765m and got it up to the Very High spec in Far Cry 3 with the 31-40 fps range.

You can easily overclock GPU to 932MHz and I've gone high as 5500MHz memory. You can probably take it even further. Also use Intel XTU to increase CPU multiplier by 2 for extra performance :)

If you paid extra for "GTX 780M", you should definitely return it.

Yeah you can actually OC ur GPU a bit, I have a 765 and OC'd to 997MHz and 6100MHz mem clock, also did XTU multiplier increases for the CPU, games run noticeably smoother.

EDIT: Also, as far as I can tell, it's pretty safe. I haven't seen GPU temps higher than 69c. My old G51Jx would hit 96-99c all the time.

You are also welcome to try ThrottleStop to prevent the CPU from reducing its clocks, though it shouldn't really be necessary. The OCing will probably result in a small bump in temps, so just be sure to keep an eye on things.
