View Full Version : Turning off Intel Turbo Boost Drops Temps by ~40c

So, my former HP laptop slowly turned into a volcano. During that time I discovered that if I switched the maximum processor state to 99%, Turbo Boost would cease to kick in on the 2nd gen i7 and the temps would stay ~10c cooler, or better, while doing video encoding for hours at a time.

I just tested the same tweak, and while the encoding speed is significantly slower, the CPU basically stays 40c cooler -- barely above idle temps, in fact. They stayed there for 15 minutes during an encoding run and didnt budge.

Screenshot attached below. While I like the max speed when Turbo Boost is on, I'm only going to use it when actually needed.

You can optimize Throttle Stop to work the same way. Since it is needed to work without power (on battery power)... Instead i let it burn at whatever speed it works at when plugged in, and throttle stop picks up when unplugged. But ya, it can run cool :)
