Looking to pickup the JW, but do all versions of the g750 have the same screen. Seems like there's a lot of issues with it. If it makes a difference, I will be buying it from memory express in Canada.

Torn between the asus and alienware 17...

The only Asus that may come with the Chi mei are the matte normal screen ones. I do not know whether or not all the standard matte screen asus are all Chi mei, though it is rather likely as different screens from different sources would only increase production costs. Though, it is not without hope as the GTX770M used in the laptops sold in the U.S. and the ones sold in Italy and Thailand have different serial strings, therefore the same could have happened with the screen. People who buy the G750 with the 3D screen will get a 120hz screen that isnt from Chi mei. I'm using the 120hz screen and I have to say that it really looks great, no horizontal lines, pretty even brightness given time for the screen to settle down. My only gripe is probably the Splendid software that makes the screen go towards a warmer tone. Some may like it, some may not. Though I would imagine most being used to with the cool tone of a typical LCD display.

All the g750JWs have a Chei Mei display. Unless you have a re-seller put in an aftermarket glossy screen.

Mine came with the standard Chi Mei display. I went to an Asus Service Center, showed them the horizontal lines and they replaced it with an AUO v1 panel. Now it has slightly less visible vertical lines. FML. Go with the 120 Hz 3D screen if you can.

Edit:
BTW, mine is JX. :)

After reading all these posts about the graininess and poor quality screen I'm almost tempted to switch sides and get the Alienware 17 instead... :$
Not a huge fan of the Alienware design but seems like more people are happier with it.

Just ordered a 770m from Xoticpc and checked the screen description:

Display 17.3" FHD 16:9 "Matte Type" Super Clear Ultra Bright LED Matte Screen (1920x1080) (SKU - X1R553)

Is this the same ChiMei screen with the issues? People are talking about an LCD screen, however my specs say LED...

LED is the type of backlight.

I have the jx and have had no problems with any kind of lines. as for alienware imo they are so overpriced that its not worth it. I assume you are on a thight budget if you are going for the jw instead of the jx so if you are looking for something cheap that has decent performance you probably should not go for alienware.
