Defective G75VW-NH71?

I got a G75VW-NH71 from Newegg, I started up the laptop and installed Firefox and a flash plugin to watch some videos, and then I started seeing errors, especially when watching flash or videos.

On one error, the screen would go black, then the desktop would come back, and it said the display driver had recovered from an error and had rebooted. Sometimes the screen would freeze, and the same message would report the display driver had crashed and recovered.

I installed and launched borderlands 2 and witnessed black flickering of textures on the screen, Characters would also flicker when i switched to inventory screen. I left the computer on inventory screen, came back and saw that the computer had rebooted, meaning it had crashed.

The screensaver turned on While i sat by the computer thinking, and I got a message that said that the screensaver isn't working and may not work on my hardware. It was a simple pipes screensaver that came installed with the laptop.

I tried fixing the problems by updating the drivers, and installing latest windows updates. The problems persisted, so I returned the laptop.

I've never returned a defective laptop before, (let alone on the same day I received it in the mail). I am still in a bit of disbelief. Can anyone tell me if these are common problems for this laptop? I'm really hoping that the laptop newegg sends me as replacement doesn't have the same problems.

You just had bad luck with that one.
When you get the new one, Unnstall Asus Update first thing.
Download from Asus Download for your model and OS, or from Intel and NVidia latest drivers
Update the Chipset drivers, IRST driver video driver, Let windows run all its updates.

Before you start loading software Test your system thoroughly. Run Furmark (http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/furmark.html) full screen 1080 15 minute burn in test. Your GPU Temps should stay below 80C or low 80s.

run any bench mark or burnin test (http://www.passmark.com/download/bit_download.htm)you want to stress your CPU same thing under 80C under a full load 15 minutes.
You wan to be sure that you have a good pasting on your CPU And GPU

Use Hwinfo64 (http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/furmark.html) sensors to log your temps while testing

Insure your LAN, WiFi, and USB 3.0 are working

Now you know your NB is working correctly!! Time to load up them games and have some fun.

First of all, Thank you for the information and recommendations.

If I discover that my GPU and/or CPU temperature is higher than 80C or low 80s, should I try to repaste them? I have no experience with taking a laptop apart. My only experience in repasting is by replaced a heatsink on a desktop CPU (AMD Athlon 3800+) and reapplied paste to it. I have leftover paste if I need it. but I think it's quite old, and don't know if it has an expiration date. It is Dynex Silver Thermal Compound Model DX-STC100 (http://www.fixya.com/support/p98947-dynex_thermal_compound_adhesives/tips). I don't have an exact date, but the copyright year on the packaging is 2004, I've kept it stored in good conditions away from heat and covered with the nozzle cap.

I've heard that many manufacturers use low-quality paste, and that repasting with good paste is a sure way to increase performance, by lowering temperaturees. I'm not afraid to learn more about how I can improve the laptop's performance, but I am terrified of doing something risky to it.

Well yes for you to re paste yourself you would void your warranty. However very few of these NB need Repasting.
My point was for you to thoroughly test your NB, and update it. It's best to insure all your hardware is functioning correctly before adding programs and games.
That way if problems come up you'll know your hardware is good, so the problems with be with the software your installing!!

Should you need to and decide to repaste yourself, there are other here that have accomplished this and will help you through it.
