My machine: G55VW laptop

The problems:

I notice some anomalies after I got my machine OS updated to Windows 8.1. I believe it has something to do with the graphics but I'm really not an expert so I could be wrong.

There have been a few times ever since I updated my OS that my laptop couldn't properly load to the main interface. It got stuck to a black screen. And what I did was I press on the power button for it to go to hybernation or standby mode which would then switch off the screen and then press the power back on and then only I can see the main interface. The tiles and all.

The size of the icons in my "Notification Area Icons" (the ones at the bottom right), every different time I switch on my laptop, I notice that the icons are sometimes small and sometimes they're at their normal size. That can't right, wouldn't you say? What do you think is happening?

Your expert opinions are very much appreciated in this.

you can try reinstall the gpu driver first (choose custom then clean installation) to see if the blank screen goes away. if you do not have a 3d screen, you can safely choose not to install the 3d-related components in the gpu driver set. (the latest ones from geforce.com is fine)

as for the anomalies of the icons, maybe this could help (http://windowsforum.com/threads/fuzzy-text-icons-after-upgrading-to-windows-8-1-solution-here.178515/).

Already downloaded and installed the latest version of the driver but it's still the same. It's as if it couldn't load the local profile and just got stuck at a black screen. I think it's the OS. *sigh*

And about the icons, it seems fine now. Thanks rewben for the link!
