heya,

i have just purchased a secondhand G55VW, and it had the Core i7-3610QM in it, and i was hoping to find one with the i7-3630QM in it, but anyway, i had a look at the specs of the cpu and then started hunting around on ark.intel.com and found this Core i7-3720QM (http://ark.intel.com/products/64891).

now comparing the two processors, the 3720QM should be able to replace the 3610QM with no worries, i dont know if anyone will disagree with me, but hear me out.

both are the same generation, tdp, t junction, nm, and socket (FCPGA988), the only difference i could find is the 3720 has the 'trusted execution technology' and the 3610 doesnt, and before anyone says anything about the 3720 coming in a BGA1224, i doubled checked the PCN number (SR0ML (http://www.cpu-world.com/sspec/SR/SR0ML.html)) and it is the same as the SR0MN (http://www.cpu-world.com/sspec/SR/SR0MN.html), cause the other 3720QM is the SR0MM (http://www.cpu-world.com/sspec/SR/SR0MM.html).

so does anyone think that there is a reason that this 3720QM will not work in the G55VW, and if so why?

cheers for looking

Trusted execution technology is fine, it's something that is for enterprise work that allows the system to be more secured against tampering and especially theft of data. If the BIOS doesn't support it, then it doesn't work, but the chip should still function. I'd say that it should work, and thanks for doing your homework about all the obvious things! :)

lol, i spent about 3 hours at work the other day googling it,

the other question i have for people, i have purchased (both secondhand) a G55VW and a G46VW, the G46 has the core i5 3230m, now my question is, is that the 988 socket cpu, like the G55VW or is it the other socket, cause from what i found its the other cpu, but there is another user on the rog forums with the 46, and he has upgraded his cpu to an i7 which is 988.

cheers

yes 3720qm (also 3630qm, 3740qm, 3820qm, and 3840qm) works for both laptops (as long as it is with FCPGA988 socket type). previously, iirc among the first generation of g55vw, there was a variant that had 3720qm in it.

ok cool, the only reason i got the 3720qm is cause it was $110australian new (well the guy says he purchased it for an upgrade but then it wouldnt fit in the system and new been used) so i thought score!

happy upgrading :) i guess the cpu heat sink should still be ok for 37xxqm. (it's not efficient to dissipate heat for 38xxqm)

yeah, i think that is cause the 38xx series cpu are 55w, and the 37xx is 45w, that is why i went with the 3720.

another question i have is, what would be better, with the g46vw, use the old 3610qm cpu to replace the 3230m, but the 3230m is 35w and the 3610qm is 45w, is there much problem with getting rid of that extra 10w of heat, or should i just try and sell the 3610qm, and see if i can get a 35w i7?

also does anyone know if there is a quad core i7 which is low voltage, cause i have only seen dual core ht low voltage i7's

what does people think of the Core i7-3632QM?
its 2.2ghz -> 3.2ghz 35w 4 core / 8 thread
SR0V0 rPGA988B FCPGA988
ticks all the boxes
but how much faster would that be over the Core i5-3230M?

no 38xxqm is 45w. check this for g46vw (from i5 to i7): http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?29405-Asus-G46vw-Upgraded-with-I7-3820qm-working-good-so-far

'how much faster' depends on your usage. in general the apparent difference between i5 and i7 mobile cpu's is the number of cores. if you use your system with a few apps only at a time, probably i5 is already sufficient.

however, since you're upgrading, just choose i7 and go ahead.

hi rewben, thanks for the correction, i was sure i had seen the 38xx at 55w, has anyone used the 3632QM?

Heard of it in computers, but never used one with it inside, so I can't say.

anything would have to be better and faster than the i5-3230m

it must be 39xxXM :D (the extreme edition of ivb i7 mobile cpu's).

Mind you, that's still a reasonable fast CPU, don't get me wrong. :) It's just not as fast as a quad-core...
