Ooooo controversial :D hehe

I don't know....if it's a pure gaming OS maybe the performance will be better than running games on a multi purpose OS...have to wait for the benchmarks...

Well that's a huge surprise. I thought it would have been Ubuntu based, since their software runs on it already...if Ubuntu is Debian based already, apologies...i'll be quiet and go stand in the corner :p

Ubuntu is infact Debian based:) Everything that uses .deb packages and APT is Debian based:)

Is "steam os" Associated in any way with the online gaming giant?

Yes. Valve Software owns/manages the Steam online distribution service, and they are also championing Steam OS as an OS for "steam boxes" that one would use as a front end for the online Steam service. It's their attempt to build a console-like experience through which you'd access your Steam library.
