ROG users,

I am writing about my successful ssd upgrade on my g46. The details are below for a bread crumb for future upgrades. Since I didn't have the win 8 install disks and thought that the os install didn't have much junk on it I moved it the the ssd. This gets around the hassel of finding the media or dealing with the oem vs standard install codes.

Note that the pc was a fresh install and didn't have more the 80gb of data on the hard disk.

What you need:
G46vw was a refurb from newegg (backlight hasn't worked out of the box)
Half size msata: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BMV4B7O/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Screwdrivers including torx to open case
some confidence in opening the laptop and unplugging delicate cables.

Install mSata:

Follow this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y7Ut1FGFj0s
install half height into msata slot and screw down to hold in place

Configuring and Moving windows 8 to msata
After booting to windows 8. the drive wouldn't show up I needed to boot into the bios (Open PC settings -Update and recovery - recovery - advanced startup) and boot to the bios and verify that the drive is listed as a boot option (don't change it yet)
Boot back to windows 8
Verify in disk management that the msata drive appears
Install EasUS Todo Backup Free
Clone the drive to the msata Include all of the support partitions
Install Minitool Partition Wizard Home Edition
Fix the alignment on the sata drive
Boot back into the bios and change the boot order to boot off the msata drive first
Open Disk management and verify that the msata drive is the boot drive
I set the old harddrive d and renamed to data
I optimized the ssd following this guide: http://www.thessdreview.com/ssd-guides/optimization-guides/the-ssd-optimization-guide-ultimate-windows-8-edition/

When confident i formatted/deleted the d drive and installed my applications and files on this drive.

Overall I am happy I did so the system is very quick and adds a little extra storage capacity. Good luck all.
