A rebranded-repainted ASUS N56JR with an old GPU?!? :( Is it for real? April Fools' Day hoax??? ROG's buyers are gamers and professionals, which means you can put this thing on the "worst product flops of 2014" list. However, looking at the bright side, Alienware, MSI, Clevo, Razer, Gigabyte,... will sell more notebooks. Who runs ROG department? Mickey Mouse?

they could atleast updated the gpu with maxwell.. It's available for pre-orders in singapore already. WIth the new MSI coming out aswell with lower price and better specs they'll have a hard time selling this laptop.

edit: here's the link of the release

Does anyone know if the battery is user removable? I am afriad that the heat from gaming would shortern the battery life if left attached.

Seems the same price as a G750JX, $1,600 - 1,700 kind of. I would rather the JX.

All depends on your portability requirements. If you need portability more than absolute top performance, but still want something with power, it's not a bad choice. All things considered, I would have preferred a more ROG line. Turn this notebook into the n56jr, and take the ROG branding off it, if it is like some people say. However, if it does hold up to ROG thermal specs, then it's a win, because lighter is always better. :)

Probably Q2-Q3 of this year, but since I am not with ASUS, I cannot say for sure. I am sure it will come to the US, though. :)

There probably isn't a "real" problem with it. I'm guessing most people (and me) were expecting a lot more, such as a refreshed G46. Considering the potential a refresh of that model would have with a GTX 860m in it, its worth anticipating. Then this rebadge showed up.

I could be wrong and Asus does have a refresh on their plans seeing as how this model above is not a U.S. release. Hopefully this is the case...

As sattelitekid said above, it seems to get the job done well.

There probably isn't a "real" problem with it.[...]

Let me introduce the MSI GS60 2PC Ghost:
- 15.6” FHD or WQHD+ (2880 x 1620)
- dual fan thermal cooling (it seems they are starting to understand...)
- GeForce GTX 860M
- Super RAID (over 900MB/s)
- 802.11ac
- 1.96 kg with battery

and now the "amazing" G56JR:
- 15.6" HD (1366 x 768) or FHD
- GeForce GTX 760M
- 802.11 b/g/n
- 2.7 kg with battery

Next question ?

Welcome to Optimus :)

You can set the preference for the GTX discrete GPU in Nvidia Control Panel 3D settings, Program Preferences - if there isn't an entry already that you can select the GPU you want, you can create an entry. That should work, let us know if it doesn't...

Optimus causes a bunch of problems with benchmarking. My work laptop has it, and it messes a bunch of things up if you try to get an accurate reading on the nVidia graphics performance.

Hey, I need some of your help RoGers.
I need from community some questions, about G56, specs, what whould you like to know about it, how would you test it. I will of course answer those questions, and if you agree, use them in my video review which I must record. Truth is that I won this G56 in a contest to review it, and I can keep it if my review win. I'd appreciate your help :) I realy want to stay in this community with that rig..

You're probably right, but if MSI can cram a 870M into their GS60 Ghost Pro I'd suspect ASUS could do similar with a G56 refresh. That being said tthe GS60 does have two fans in exchange for no ODD. I'd gladly lose the ODD and buy an external one if they could get a 870M in that thing.

I just got this laptop, and, I must say, the laptop never really got hot even while playing games on it. The fans didn't sound that loud, either, even without wearing headphones.

The vents were only blowing out slightly warm air; it quickly went not-warm not long after exiting games.

Valkadino, bug splat is LoL's bug reporting tool called bug splat :)

https://support.leagueoflegends.com/entries/28849700-Bug-Splat-and-Game-Crashes

" Why is crashing called Bug Splat?

If League of Legends encounters an error that forces it to stop running, it uses an application called Bug Splat to capture information about the crash and post-crash diagnostic. If you send the Bug Splat report it helps us effectively identify causes of common crashes and fix them in patches or hotfixes. "

Lets stick with BSOD and crashes, unless it is a LoL crash, then you would file your bug splats to LoL, and go to the LoL Support Forums, that is their specialty :)

If you are getting BSOD's and crashes out of the box in many things (not just LoL), then I would take it back, it's got problems you shouldn't need to deal with on a new machine. Take it back before your return period expires and swap it for a new G56JR that works.

If you let the return period expire, you will need to work with Asus to RMA the laptop for repair.

https://vip.asus.com <== create a login here, register the laptop, and describe in short exacting language the problem in a Technical Inquiry

Please come back and let us know how it works out for you :)

Valkadino, so you are getting BSOD's in games other than LoL and restarting for no reason otherwise?

Did the G56R do this from the start? Is it possible you installed something that is causing the BSOD's and random restarts?

Did you tune your GPU or CPU settings with Asus Tweak Tool or XTU, or in some way change something that would make the G56R unstable?

You could try F9 reset to restore your G56R back to the original out of the box configuration and see if the problem goes away.

Otherwise, return you G56R, and get another one :)

Valkadino, Asus maintains a support site for all their products:

http://support.asus.com

You search for your product model, G56JR, and get the support area for your product:

Support For Notebook G56JR
http://support.asus.com/download.aspx?SLanguage=en&p=3&m=G56JR&hashedid=tCZDiOYKS1xofh85

Then you click the OS drop down, select Windows 8.1

And find the Manual section. Then find the Manual in your language, here is mine, English:

http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/G56JR/0409_E8708_A.pdf

And, then search for F9, until you find the section for using the recovery partition, in the English Manual, it starts on page A-16 and continues on A-17

40872

And, I just noticed that Asus included several options for the restore, just the C partition, recovery of whole HD and create 1 or 2 partitions, nice.

I would pick recovery of whole HD and create 1 partition - makes the C drive the size of the whole free space on the drive instead of splitting it across a C and D partition.

Don't forget to backup all your personal data to external storage, the recovery will delete the existing C/D partition and recreate the partitioning.

While you are there at the support site, check for driver updates and download those to update your recovered system.

Valkadino, the manual for the G56JR tells you how to do it, did you read through it thoroughly?

You have to start tapping the F9 key right after power up, you can't do it from a warm reboot/restart, and keep tapping the F9 key till you are in the recovery tool.

Have you ever tried to get into a BIOS with F2? Same thing, it is hit or miss until you get the rhythm of the timing. Keep trying :)

Hey again ..

I did everything that i could do to repair my G56JR..

It keeps the BSOD's and crashing all the time. It happens more when i open Lol Client or when i go watch a stream on Twitch..

I'm having not only 1 BSOD like the most people .. I'm having like 20 different BSOD's ..

Some of them:
- kernel security check failure
- memory management
- driver irql not less or equal (most common)
- bad pool header
- page fault in nonpaged area
- system_service_exception
- kmode_exception_not_handled

I already had those BSOD's..

However , somedays , it don't crashes , BSOD's doesn't appear and my G56JR works in perfection ..

I don't know what to do. The PC cost me 1.200€. Its a lot of money. I'd buy a macbook but some friends suggested me to buy a G56JR and now I am very disappointed with this purchase.

Valkadino, it sounds like you should return it right away.

Why are you keeping it if it is flaky in performance, and randomly crashing. Get another one, or get your money back and get something else :)

I would recommend another Asus, and definitely not a Macintosh - they are overpriced for what you get, and terrible at gaming.

As you can imagine, you got a bad one, they don't all have these kind of problems, try again :)

Valkadino, if you are in the return period of the seller, you take it back and get another one, or ask for your money back.

If you are outside the sellers return period, you contact Asus and ask for a repair RMA.

You can create a login here, register your laptop, and file a Technical Inquiry describing the problem and ask Asus for for held debugging the problem, which might include an RMA to ship your laptop to Asus for repair.
