i need the part number off a G51vx-x1a motherboard.

i know that the G51vx-rx05 boards were simply incompatible with quadcores on a hardware level. i have reason to believe the board i have may be a different board. that may possibly be compatible. i need to compare the part number i have to the part number of either a x1a model or a a1 model.

if anyone can take a look or tell me what that part number is i'd appreciate the crap out of it.

do you need the serial number off the board?

the motherboard part number was:
69N0E0M12A03-01 G60VX(203A)

like i said, i know this has been done to death on the G51's. but i've seen at least one other person say that it's worked with a G60vx. the ones that were saying it for sure didn't work was with a A12 revision.

at this point i'm pretty much convinced i'd have to buy one, before i'd actually know if it would work or not.

that i don't know. i'm under the impressions that the x1a wouldn't use a quad either.

the only thing that made me wonder about it was when i started looking at the 60 page epic thread about it, alot of the g51 users that couldn't get it to work said their boards tended to say g51 on them, or had a different layout of the part number sticker.

it seems that later on, the sticker changed and the part number format just used a different part number. this makes me curious to try it.

Grungeboy, I have personally witnessed a person get a quad core cpu running in the G50Vt-X1 the biggest thing you have to watch out for is theoretically if you can get the CPU working in your laptop it may kill it as going from a CPU running roughly 35w to a CPU running nearly 85w the cooling may not keep up with it properly.

heard alot of people express those same issues regarding the E8435 cpu in these laptops. in theory, save for the different parts inside, there was no difference in the plastic shell or fan assembly between a g51vx-rx05 and a g51vx-a1. considering that the cpu inside the A1 model was rated at 45TDP, it would stand to reason that if the board can handle and boot with the given cpu i was planning to use (Q9100), that there should be no heat issues other than the fact that this is already a hot potato.

i've performed a cooling mod on the underside, right now my cpu idle temp is 43C and my gpu idle temp is 54C. in theory i should be good to go. what concerns me to a degree about the whole thing is battery life. how bad was battery life on a A1 model with the quad?

right now i'm eyeballing the intel e8235 cpu as it can be had for $50 on ebay and is a 6mb L2 2.8Ghz chip.

Alrighty I did a bit of digging, with the Asus G60Vx the Processor support is as follows.
Intel® Core™2 Quad Processor Q9000 : 2.0 GHz
Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor T9600/T9550/T9400/ P8800/ P8700/ P8600/ P8400/ P7450/ P7350/ T6600 : 2.8 GHz - 2.2 GHz,

I'm assuming you are running the P8400 series and not the E8400 series which is socket 775 and not the mobile PGA478

The P8400 series "Socket PGA478/PGA479 Compatible" runs a max TDP of 25w

Below starts the Quad Core CPUs

The Q9000 Series "Socket PGA478 Compatible" runs a max TDP of 45w

The Q9100 Series "Socket PGA478 Compatible" runs a max TDP of 45w

The 2 biggest things that could and will most likely bone you is the Heat, and Layer 2 Cache size, but on this I would like to defer the question over to Chastity on what the maximum L2 Cache size support the motherboard has before you purchase any CPU, and what the maximum cooling support the in laptop cooling can handle.

With the upgrade from Dual core to Quad core you are going to see a considerable hit to the battery life and will have to modify the power settings considerably to get desired battery life from the unit, if I had to guess I'd say you would lose roughly 15-33% useable battery life after the tweaks but you won't be anywhere near as bad off as some powerhouse laptops where you're running from outlet to outlet :)

this one's actually a g51vx, but i'm trying to find out if the board revision is compatible (i know which ones aren't, but as far as i know with this one, it's simply untested) since it's a later revision of a G60vx board, i'm figureing it might actually work.

right now i'm out a battery anyway, i gotta wait until i can spring for a new one.

i was looking through some of the upgrade threads and found that people were swapping the q9000 for the qx9300 and such. i'm assuming that means that those boards will support 12mb l2. it would make sense then that if the board supports the quad cpu, it'll handle the 12mb l2.

now i gotta try to get my hands on one for testing.

there'd been extensive testing when the g51's came out, but after it was decided it wouldn't work, everyone put on their sad faces and went home. i noticed there's a lack of any evidence of people trying it with the g60vx boards.

oh and to clear up, this one is using the p7350 cpu. the other chip i was referring to (the e8235) is a mac desktop cpu that was used in the imac line. it's a modified t9600 basically, but some are 35TDP and some are 45TDP. they work well as a upgrade, just tend to run a little warmer, but overclock and undervolt well.
