Thunderbolt 10 Gbit/s ?!? So lame.

@Jenos, at this point is clear, Asus wants us to buy a Razer Blade: 14 inch, 3200 x 1800 pixel touchscreen display, GTX 870M. Pesonally I'll wait for next gen with Maxwell (GTX 970M ?), then I'll obey "Asus wish".

Unfortunately, Optimess is a deal breaker. People don't buy a 17 inch gaming laptop for battery life; they buy it so they can game in the living room and move the laptop around the house. Optimess has tons of compatibility issues and it forces you to use the inferior integrated graphics for 2D (with its limitations such as the lack of support for proper color profiles and digital vibrance).

Unfortunately I can't afford the Razer, it cost way too much here in the Philippines. Well an Asus staff did posted in a thread here last month that Asus will release 15" rog's this year. Am still waiting for those.

Very good question!

860M is something you should look at more precisely if buying a laptop with it - there's 2 versions of it with no difference in naming, one is using Kepler/GK104, one Maxwell/GM107 - they should have about the same performance but the latter obviously has notably better battery life on same battery size. The new series also introduces new "Battery Boost" technology which tries to down clock the GPU as much as possible while maintaining 30 FPS performance in the running game.

Err if you are referring to Optimus, it's disabled. As far as I have seen of the last couple years of ASUS ROG Laptops, they always disable it...it's not even an option to enable in BIOS, though a few people have complained about not having it, it's always disabled.

In my opinion 15" is just a poor choice: it's unportable as a 17", with the disadvantage of the smaller display. A truly 15" ROG notebook (and not the crappy G56JR) would only erode sales of the G750, because they would be too similar, with the same goal. To have people buying a G750 and, maybe, a second ROG notebook, the second should be a lightweight 14". At the moment I don't see a winner in this category, because these notebooks suffer from some defect: they are extremely noisy (Gigabyte P34G, and the smaller Clevo W230ST/SS), good to cook eggs (Razer Blade), portable as a hippo (Alienware 14).

Disagree on the 15-17" indifference. It's very noticeable to carry imo. Even 14-15 is noticeable. My G46 with FHD display is fantastic.

Well, I’m currently in possession of a G75VX and I must say it’s a pretty powerful machine, well made and made to last. With an overclocked graphics card (+ 135/1000) I can play all the latest games with maxed out settings (with greatly reduced or no anti-aliasing of course) hovering at or just below 30 fps. And I play pretty demanding titles like Metro, Crysis, Battlefield 4, Bioshock Infinite, Far Cry 3, etc. so overall I’m satisfied with it.
However I’m considering replacing it – I’ll probably sell it off to my younger brother since his old laptop might pack up soon. This time I’m getting a laptop with the best graphics card but I’m wondering whether I should go for the G750JZ or wait for a few more months until the high-end Maxwell mobile graphics cards are released (GTX 880MX or whatever they call the beefiest card of all). Besides, can anyone give some info as to whether we can expect new Intel CPUs to be released this year as well as DDR4 SDRAM and Nvidia G-Sync for laptops ?

The Maxwell 880m has already been announced, it's on the high-end new 750 model. As for the Intel CPU's and DDR4, Broadwell is supposed to be coming to laptops this year and I do not know yet, but I don't think DDR4 is going to be in laptops this year. I know DDR4 is coming with Haswell-E Desktop CPU's, but I haven't heard anything about Broadwell's Memory Capabilities.

My question is,
I've got the 2012 G75VX with the 670MX.

Now i would like to get the Laptop with the 870m.

From you guys, knowledge which would still be better?

even though the 870 is new would it run just as well as a 670mx.

These comments could seem silly but that shows my lack of knowledge.

Many thanks.

The 870M will crush the 670MX +70% performance in 3dm 11 if i remember..
but you have to know that it will generate more heat as well, the G750 cooling solution is the best in the market so dont be afraid of the heat :)
You just have to think about waiting for the 870MX (20nm maxwell) to be released some day (q3/q4 may be) or just stick with the 870M :)

well what I don't like about it is it's just a repainted N56jr. It's a ROG so I was kinda expecting more like dual vents for better cooling, stealth design like his bigger brother and a new GPU based on the 800m series. Well it is a ROG so there should be more into it not just a copy cat D:

I agree with you, but I was thinking something else. When Asus releases the new generation of G55 they most probably will keep the old crappy TN displays in order to keep the pricing but if I am right, we could swap the IPS 1080p display form g56 in to the new Asus 15'6 series. But all this is just an idea and I might be wrong.

Ok so i thought 800 series will be Maxwell, but i guess the first generation will be same architecture as he 700 but they added a dedicated chip onboard to enable shadow play on laptops, plus that battery boost thingy.

I'm feeling a bit old in this topic coz Im still on the g75vw 670m but really want to upgrade so if the new 800 series is not Maxwell i'm not gonna be bothered then and wait for the refresh version.

Just a question to G750 owners, hows the 4700hq cpu is it good?

I'm much with you Desired, From what i can understand by myself owning a G75VX it came out in october,
so the VW came out with the 670m in march earlier that year ( 2012).

So expect the 880m maxwell (even maybe named the 880mx) by october this year?

As in a laptop i'd like to see a power decrease, thus a heat saving possibly.

ShadyStan

Well, I have resolved to stick with my G75VX until Nvidia rolls out the beefiest mobile Maxwell GPU (GTX 880MX or whatever they call it). Judging by the 2012 Fermi to Kepler transition I don't think we're gonna have to wait much longer (perhaps another 6 or 7 months).

I will probably get to benchmarks this weekend (hopefully). Schedule is tight with college right now. I will also test out the shadowplay feature and post some vids to Youtube, I heard its way better than fraps. Games I will most likely benchmark are Bioshock Infinite, Far Cry 3, Metro Last Light, Sleeping Dogs, Tomb Raider, Saints Row IV, BF3, and a few others. I don't own BF4 yet... :(

I can already tell you that temps are amazing on this, as in Bioshock Infinite with max settings (no aliasing) for almost 2 hours and my hands are on cold aluminum. I did not have the previous model so I don't know how significant that would be. Asus did say that the 800m models have an upgraded cooling system over the previous ones. I had a "stove with an idustrial fan" (2011 Sony VAIO F) for my previous laptop so I am quite amazed. Sometimes when under really light load, the fans turn off and you don't hear this laptop at all, silent as an empty room (don't know if the previous one does that).

As for optimus, I have not seen any problems with it. I have gamed on battery and plugged in and have not experienced any problems commonly known with optimus. On battery, the pc throttles just slightly (battery boost turned off).

The built in GPU Tweak only works when plugged in and it isn't the same as how people use it on the GTX 700ms laptop. As in, you can't manually set your clock and mem speeds. It's only an automatic "5%" boost. I have yet to determine when the boost kicks in. It does give you the option to run the fans at max speed.

I can't seem to find those lines associated with Splendid screen and I have not taken it off yet. That's as of now though...
Same goes with the back-light bleed issue I've seen popping up in the forum.

I will create a separate thread where I will post my comments with some pics and vids. Just remember I am only a week in with this laptop so some of these comments could change.

To be honest its not worth the switch. If you already have the JX, just overclock it to get better performance. The 860m is slightly below the performance of the 770m. Really the only reason to switch is if you want the latest and greatest hardware when it comes to these two choices.

Here is a link that shows gaming performance between both graphics cards (Scroll down a bit to find the performance in several games):
http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-860M.107794.0.html

EDIT: Don't take my word for it, it's your decision and I don't know what you would want or what would make you happy.

Some people say that GTX 860m is better then 770m and some say that is the same thing and your saying that is weaker .... I dont know what to do.... Well i think 860m is very new and in time they will have better drivers and its might be better then 770m?

faster by what, 1% 5% sometimes slower.. lets just say gtx 860M = 770M :)
It's useless to change a lappy that works ok :)
the JM will support optimus while the JX does not.. its the only difference..

Good points. :) Quite commonly, the performance from the latest generation of nVidia cards approximately matches (depending on benchmark) the performance of the cards of the previous generation that are one step higher. I.E.
860M = 770M
850M = 760M = 670M
the X80M cards are usually the ones that break this rule, because they are much more powerful than the X70M cards that are one step lower.

I'm very close to pulling the trigger on a G750JS. In the above comparison I believe another difference is a slightly faster (7200 vs 5400) HDD.

My question, my understanding is this box comes with 16MB installed in 2 of 4 available memory slots. Two of the slots are easily accessed, the other 2 require some disassebly to get to. Which slots will the sticks be installed in? If the easy access slots, can those 8GB sticks be replaced with 16GB sticks or do I have to populate the other 2 slots. If they're pre-installed in the disassembly slots, how hard are they get to in the event one of them fails out of warranty?

I'd been looking at the JX. I've found the JS for about $150 more. Even though Optimus doesn't mean that much to me the performance increase of the 870 over the 770 seems significant. I plan on keep this one for a while. From what I've read the 870 will be a Kepler chip (subject to change of course), the Maxwells appear to be in the 860s.

Get an SSD, first thing, build it in to your purchase budget - it is the best most important upgrade you can do - way more important that growing / replacing the memory.

The Samsung Evo units are inexpensive now, even 1TB is within reach, I would recommend a minimum of 512GB if you want to install games as well as basic OS / Windows stuff on the C drive. The Samsung 840 Pro 512GB is another great choice.

The 2 available memory slots are usually the free ones, Asus isn't going to make you open the top to get at the other 2 slots, and it voids the warranty so you shouldn't do it yourself, at least not right away.

If you match the memory "family", you can put the next higher density SODIMM into the free slots, there have been several good reports, but also some failures - basically the 8GB SODIMM over the 4GB SODIMM in the under keyboard slots.

I haven't seen a report here about using 16GB SODIMM's. I was interested myself in these, but only found 1 source, and they were almost $500 each, so I have been waiting for the price to come down.

If you are going to go through the expense of getting 16GB SODIMM's you might want to find a shop to pull the original memory and put the 16GB SODIMM's in the under keyboard slots. Then you don't have to worry about mismatch - likely with 8GB / 16GB combo as the only 16GB SODIMM's aren't the same as the installed brands I have seen.

Optimus means you need to pay attention to the Nvidia control panel 3D settings for everything you install, and set it to use GTX instead of Intel GPU - many will just default to Intel as they aren't aware of multiple card options. If you ever have a performance problem on an Optimus system, that is the first thing to check. You get used to it after a while...

I haven't seen definitive performance results comparing the new systems yet, that will take time for people to get them, get comfortable with them as to getting the most out of them and then posting their results.

I do know now that the built in Asus GPU Tweak tool for the new laptops limits tuning / OC to +5% over stock settings, which is less than we have been able to easily get on the JW/JX/JH.

Either one is a great choice :)

I'm pretty excited to get my G750JM this week. One thing I haven't been able to find is what chipset are they using for the Integrated graphics when using Optimus? I wonder if it's the Intel 5000 series?

I considered the Gigabyte, MSI, and Clevo/Sager models but I chose ASUS ROG because I felt it had the best overall features (expandability, Thunderbolt/Mini-DisplayPort, 802.11ac) and build quality.

BIOHAZARD9519, you might want to try to live with out Splendid - it tends to over dramatize the image - and so far my AUO screen looks much better without Splendid - same benefit when I uninstalled Splendid on the Chi Mei screen laptops.

There have been complaints about both the Chi Mei and AUO screens, with some replacing the screens for another, only to find the problem is the underlying Nvidia Graphics card - rendering failures in some images - and those have been "fixed" / modified with recent (a few months) driver updates.

The AUO screen can refresh at 70hz, and the Chi Mei improves when refresh is set over 85hz - lines/image flashing stops - I ran my Chi Mei's at 100hz without problems / flashing.

If you are running Windows 8.0, change the Display setting for desktop magnification to 100% from default of 125%, and check it under Windows 8.1 - Change the Size of All Items - it should be at the far left slider setting "smaller" - which is also 100%. Anything larger and you will get image distortions/grain.

The 3D glossy screen used to be in demand, but up until recently the 3D equipped laptops couldn't use the Nvidia Release drivers without getting black screen of death at startup. It seems to be fixed now, but it was a problem until recently, about 2 months.

The screens aren't ugly, all screens / rendering engines fail at some display - they are all simulations of reality, and while mostly passable (non-offensive), some things do fail - try to avoid them if you find them - and report them to the rendering engine , driver, laptop, and game company when appropriate.

But, and this is to all disgruntled with their screen owners, please, and I can't emphasize this enough, please don't be a dick and ***** about it over and over and over here in the user support forums - we know, and we can't fix it, but we really enjoy our laptops - and want to enjoy our laptops without a side of OCD outrage :)

If you like it, keep it. If you can't live with it, take it back. But, most important of all be positive and share your successes as much as you share your disappointments - and if you can, be cool about both :)

For me personally, with a 3D screen (which i really like), i never had any problems with any Nvidia released drivers on windows 8, 8.1 and also windows 7.
I used versions from about last October and sometimes update when I hear that people have problems just to test.
But, the big BUT, they were allways clean installs without any added Asus utilities.
hmm, what does that say?

kb0sdq, for me app functionality is the judgement call each of us has to make about what we leave installed and what we decide we are better off uninstalling.

The best thing I can suggest is to investigate the performance of every app installed on our laptops, and determine if we need the function all the time, once in a while, or not at all.

Initially I give all the apps a chance, even app's that have caused me problems in the past.

In the case of Splendid, it doesn't do what I want done. Color correction of the screen to a neutral balance - with options for changing the color temperature profile. Simple things, that everyone wants, and the manufacturer / integrator are best positioned to give us.

Unfortunately Splendid delivers no balanced correction, just the opposite, the kind of garish unbalanced view that we see on TV's in the dealer showroom to make the set sparkle on initial viewing under harsh lighting. I don't mind providing such an option along with long term settings that would actually be helpful.

But, I know that someday it is possible that Splendid will offer useful functionality, so I try out new releases.

Going through the Asus Installation Wizard, found in c:\eSoftware\eDriver\ here is what I have uninstalled - what Asus Installation Wizard says I can install, with a note as to why I don't have it installed:

Asus Power4Gear - gets in the way of manual setting of power plans - P4G changes it back to a P4G profile on it's own later.

AsusDVD - I have my own license for Blu-ray Cyberlink Power DVD 13

Splendid - As above

Gaming Mouse - I don't have an Asus mouse plugged in to this laptop, some versions caused crashes - not for me, I always uninstall what I don't need when I first get a laptop.

Cyberlink Power2Go - I don't need it.

Asus Vibe2.0 - I could check this out, but haven't - I have enough drags on my time and attention.
http://vibe.asus.com/asus_vibe_web/ena01.php

The Asus Installation Wizard says I have all the drivers installed, and I guess up to date - there are no updates available to install.

I turn off the start up / run at boot, as I don't need them running all the time, just occasionally when I need to run them.

The memory spec is fine, it is possible it is bad, or at the least, not compatible with the memory already installed. When upgrading the memory in the G750 it is a good idea to look to the forums for people that have successfully upgraded already to find compatible memory.

The easiest way to get compatible memory is to get the same brand/model as already installed. You can find out what the G750 came with by using a couple of apps to read the make/model/settings:

CPU-Z
http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html

HWinfo64
http://www.hwinfo.com/download.php

AIDA64 - Engineer
http://www.aida64.com/downloads

If you really want better / faster / larger memory, you are better off replacing all the memory in the laptop that way all the memory is the same compatible spec. On the G750 it isn't easy, as you have to disassemble the top / screen (just pull it), so you can lift the top to expose the area under the keyboard, where the other 2 DIMM's are located. If you have a local Asus Service Center that can do that for you, it is a good idea to let someone do it that is experienced - you void the warranty doing it yourself - or by letting a non-Asus company service it.

Let us know what you have installed. If you have 4GB DIMM's, and want to install 8GB DIMM's, you can get memory in the same make/model line sometimes that will be compatible.

dblkk

Yes, that's good to know. So mine should be ddr3l, which when I bought it I was under the understanding that it was. It is quite possible the ram is bad, I just filed a rma with the company and got my rma number so will be shipping out soon, probably tommarrow. I was also fairly certain I bought this specific memory as I read that several people used this exact one. So I guess if I get the new ones and it stil doesn't work, ill probably just try taking out the original ram (since its still only 8gb but 2x4gb) and replace with my 8gb, and then if that works, ill just order another 8gb stick and have my 16gb that way.

Thanks for the help though, ill report back in the next few weeks when I get the new memory and let you know how that works out.

Cool, if those are recommended then it is likely just bad ram, it happens. It could also be that the person that tried and recommended those specific SODIMM's had a different make/model of factory installed memory in his laptop than you have in yours, which means they are just not compatible with yours.

Asus uses a number of different makes/models of memory over time, they aren't all the same.

Did you try just putting in 1 at a time? That way you can RMA only 1, and get some bump in memory while you are waiting for the 4th one to arrive? At least 1 should work. It would be unusual to have both fail.. that lends to the idea that they are not compatible.

For me I found out the make/model of what I have installed, and then ordered 1 just like it, but I already had 3 x 8GB, and adding 1 8GB was easy.

Another guy bought 2 x 8GB of the same Hynix family as the 4GB's it came with, and that worked too. :)

Yes, I know this. Which is why its so hard to know whats going on, which is why I posted on here. Could be ram, yes I tried both, one at a time, in each slot, and same results. I filled out RMA, so hopefully when I get these new sticks, ill know that hopefully it isn't the ram is bad. And then I will try taking out the origininals and just using my new ones, hope that fixes it. Just wished laptops were more like desktops in this way. Or the fact that I don't utilize 100% ram using my programs. I'd like to know which works and just get 4x8gb sticks of that, have 32gb total, ram disk 20gb and use 12gb for system.

So I finally took the plunge and bought the 458 Italia (or a Zonda R or Konigseeggeeegegeeeeegggg or "place your favourite analogy here') of the gaming laptop world - G750JZ-DS71. It is quite simply superb in its built quality (Previously, a Sony Vaio VGN-FW460J which was also a fantastic quality hardware for its category. Used it for 4.5 years). But this ASUS is on a whole another level.

But like a proper thoroughbred, the G750 series does go a bit wonky from time to time. I am refering to the comments about CPU throttling due to...well, whatever the reason was. Anyway, I am happy to report the JZ does not have any such problems. In fact I am unplugged right now and, as you can see, the CPU is going quite well.

Another thing I noticed was for the first couple of days the battery would not chage to 100% even after multiple hours of charging. However, I did see 100% today.

All in all, I am quite chuffed.

The AUO screen can refresh at 70hz, and the Chi Mei improves when refresh is set over 85hz - lines/image flashing stops - I ran my Chi Mei's at 100hz without problems / flashing.

Huge Problem with G750JZ and Intel HD Graphics 4600 + refresh rate:

Hi, hmscott
what model of ROG do you have? and How did you increase refresh rate to 70hz for AUO screen?

I just received JZ model with "AUO B173hw01 v4 90% glossy" (bought from reseller; default screen is matte for this model) - and its pain to look at, the colors is great, but when you look at the text it’s Very hard to focus on it and after a day of using it I have headache. My wife also notice that something wrong with it. We both have Gateway FX laptops with 1980x1200 AUO V0 glossy screen for 5years now - so it’s Not resolution.

Default refresh rate is 60 Hz for this screen. I notice that when I uninstall "Intel HD Graphics 4600" driver - from device manager, refresh rate changes to 64 Hz and Only then I can see text without any distortion and its sharp.
I think it has something to do with integrated graphics/optimus.
But at the same time when I uninstall "Intel HD Graphics 4600" driver - I can‘t change screen brightness at all - it stays at max.

HyperZ, I have a JH, without Optimus, , so I can't interactively debug this, yet :(

But, you may have landed on something that might lead the way to a work around, maybe :)

When you uninstalled the Intel driver, try doing a reinstall of the latest Nvidia driver 337.50 - and make it a Clean install - check the clean install box - and see if you then have the Custom Resolution option in the Nvidia Control panel resolution setting section. You could also try this with older drivers, that have no idea of the Nvidia/Intel Optimus for the G750.

My current working understand based on reports, no direct experience yet with the G750 Optimus => The problem with Optimus is that it requires all video settings go through the Intel driver, as the video path for everything is via the Intel hardware. But, if you can uninstall the Intel video driver and reinstall the Nvidia driver - it might allow you do use the old method of resolution setting via the Nvidia control panel.

Let us know if this, or some variation works for you :)

I did "reinstall latest Nvidia driver 337.50 - and make it a Clean install - check the clean install box - and see if you then have the Custom Resolution option"
-Did not help, custom resolution option did not show up.

"You could also try this with older drivers, that have no idea of the Nvidia/Intel Optimus for the G750."
-the problem with this its games... they will not run properly. But I'll try.

AUO, running at 75% brightness, 70hz.

Wish I could help with the Optimus thing, but it looks like it will take some interaction with / waiting for Intel / Nvidia to get features resolution / brightness features working.

On the G750JW/JX/JZ without Optimus, you set the resolution / refresh rate in the Nvidia Control Panel, as a Custom Resolution, like this:

Can you please post the equivalent shots from the Intel Graphics Control Panel? I use Windows Snipping Tool, built in to Windows 8/8.1 to grab the dialog shots.

I guess we just need to report the need for custom resolutions to Intel / Nvidia and see if one or both can get it in the next update.

Nomak, you might be over driving the subwoofer. You can open the Realtek HD Audio Manager, click on the Speakers Tab => Sound Effects Tab and uncheck Loudness for a start, then click on the Speakers Tab => Audio Wizard Tab and Launch the ROG Audio Wizard click an Audio Shaping selection, then click the expansion button (top right) and twiddle the knobs to tune the audio.

Nomak, how did you set up the Configure and Properties for your Speakers? Here is how I have mine set. The 2 key items are to make sure you don't set Full Range Speakers - that redirects subwoofer output to the main speakers, and Enchancements Loudness - I have it on for the enhanced subwoofer involvement.

If you are getting broken / intermittent audio out of the speakers / subwoofer, and you can't make it go away with configuration changes, then it is likely a hardware problem, and you need to file a Technical Inquiry with all the info you can provide Asus - all the results of what you tried to resolve it to a physical hardware problem.

Sign up here, register your laptop, and file the Technical Inquiry.

I discovered a screen flickering that is caused by low PWM frequency (backlight brightness is controlled with PWM).

A think this is big problem with Optimus GPU for ALL new series of Asus notebooks. So if you have sensitive eyes see notebook/screen in person before you buy.

Nomak, if you install the drivers direct from the Realtek site, you may lose the ROG branded Audio Wizard, so stick with the latest from Asus, they work great. :)

Here is the latest Realtek driver package Version V6.0.1.7195 - note that Asus messed up the order in the list, the latest one is the 5th entry down - Windows 8.1 x64:

There are so many items in the construction of a laptop that can fail, it is amazing how high of a success rate there is in high - end laptops. Even with extensive testing and qa, parts get jostled in shipping and handling, and infant mortality out side the qa burn-in time also happens.

I have had good luck with Asus, I only had 1 RMA to do in all the Asus laptops I have had, and it was tough being without it during the repair, but it was worth it - long lifetime service, so hang in there while it is out for repair :)

HyperZ, the video makes it look like a sync rate issue between the screen and the video camera... near 60/30hz beat frequency. You see that same scrolling lines with your naked eye?

If you are seeing that with the naked eye, it isn't normal, get it RMA'd :(

Actually the same problem has been reported before on this and other laptops. You induce it by bringing the brightness down and the "problem" appears.

Raise the brightness a tad till you don't have the issue, problem solved :)

Is there a particular time code that gives you the most distressing sounds?

If you are concerned it is a customization, a change you made that caused this, you could try doing a restore recovery reset to original configuration. F9 at boot, or create an Asus Backtracker Recovery Flash drive - USB 3.0 16GB and boot off of that. You will want to back up all your stuff, and put it on an external drive as the reset deletes all partitions on both drive bay drives and builds everything again from scratch, just like came out of the box.

Sign up here, register your laptop, and file a Technical Inquiry with the details of the problem, clearly and politely communicate the failure and how it seems to work fine on battery, but fails when plugged in. Ask for debugging suggestions for a fix, or if you should ask for an RMA to have Asus look at it and fix it.

I don't know what they would be, but I would guess that plugged in it will get really good framerates, and unplugged will be a lot slower. That's just the nature of the system. The battery can't run the CPU+GPU at full-speed, so it throttles.

Tindrael, I don't know if a driver update will allow changing the refresh, even a little, but so far no, there doesn't seem to be a way to get beyond the Optimus limit of 60hz - the Intel / Nvidia apps don't allow changing the refresh, and it looks like the hardware is fixed at 60hz.

I found this video, that has some discussion on the Optimus function, and for him why his 120hz screen meant he didn't get Optimus on his Alienware - starting at 1:40 in the video it is generally interesting for an Optimus breakdown.

Hello guys, new Asus owner here. I recently buy a ASUS ROG G750JS-DS71 over Amazon. After reading a lot about Alienware, MSI, Clevo, etc i choose Asus, mostly because the good reviews and because three of my friends have Asus gaming machines and they love it.

I still waiting for my laptop to arrive and i have to say i am worried. After reading a lot of forums and the problems the G750 series has. I don't know what to expect, a faulty and/or low quality display, faulty RAM, Overheating (i have a cooling pad waiting for the laptop), bad thermal pasting, etc. On top of that, seems like Optimus is a problem with this models. It is possible to disable Optimus from the BIOS?

Anyway, i work on the gaming industry as an artist and i buy this laptop for CAD work, 3ds max, Zbrush, Photoshop and some gaming. I will come back to you guys when the laptop arrives.

Cheers.

RipVanFit, Asus laptops are awesome, most have no problems at all :)

Optimus is new in the G750, and because that means all the Video goes through the Intel CPU/GPU, even though the rendering is done on the Nvidia GTX card, it can raise the average CPU temperature over the previous generation because it has more silicon drawing power and generating heat, but it should run fine for most jobs.

For you in particular, you might want to make sure the apps you want to run can be forced to render on the Nvidia GPU, as some in that class of app only run on Intel, while some can be tweaked to run on the Nvidia processor.

dblkk is forced to run renders on the Intel GPU, and with the CPU/GPU at 100%, the heat generated gets into thermal throttling territory:

Optimus has a hardware component, the Intel GPU has all video outputs now, the Nvidia GTX only does rendering. You can't disable Optimus, except to make exceptions in the Nvidia Control Panel to default Globally to Nvidia High Performance Graphics, and force individual applications via the Program settings - for programs that don't respect the Global setting, and there are still applications that refuse to run on Nvidia - or crash when set to it. You can google your app name optimus to find relevant info.

You lose all the video control from the Nvidia control panel, and need to do it in the Intel Control panel - and you are limited to 60hz - no setting the Chi Mei panel to 100hz, or the AUO panel to 70hz, among other limitations. Color settings, and other video tuning is now done in the Intel control panel.

The displays for the most part are fine. There is a subset of people that get vertical/horizontal faint lines in their screens - but it isn't a screen problem, more likely a parts tolerance issue - those that take the time to RMA that problem to Asus get back a laptop without the lines. Some try to swap it at the vendor, but it looks like it is a problem that gets replicated through a build batch, so that won't help - unless you return and go to a different vendor.

Optimus is a problem with all laptops that have Optimus, Asus is a better choice because it's cooling is better than most. The only way around it is to get a laptop without Optimus. The G750JW/JX/JH don't have Optimus, and are at least as fast as the current models, as well as running cooler without Optimus, their prices are going up...

For those apps that won't run on Nvidia with Optimus, and are forced to run on Intel GPU, even the G750JW will be faster... at least there the Nvidia GPU is the only choice and it will run much faster on that 765m than on the Intel GPU.

Please come back and post your results, and how we can help, and at least let us know how it works out for you!

Wow, thank you very much for the info. My Laptop should arrive on Monday, so i will post my findings later.

I hope i can make the Nvidia GPU run my software for work.

Cheers.

Hello all. First off, im new to posting in forums so be gentle...

I've had my g750jm for about 3 months. When it runs its absolutely awesome. But it will randomly freeze on startup and restart. I have to hold down the power button and force it to shut off. After about 2 or 3 tries it will either work or go to the blue screen sayin whea_uncorrectable_error. Through my research I found that i should reflash my bios. I did so and it happens less but still happens. I even completely erased and restarted windows 8 and redownloaded everything and it still will randomly freeze. Any thoughts/suggestions? Please be specific because im not to savvy with Windows. I've jumped the Apple ship and have converted.

FINALLY! I have figured out what was causing days of random and frustrating freezing. Now, keep in mind im new to this so if this helps anyone else thats why im posting.

1- Uninstall all nvidia stuff. Install everything but geoforce expierence and do a "clean" install
2- Changed my power setting to high performace power4gear.

Which Nvidia driver are you installing? The latest 337.88 is giving crashing problems for some new JM/JS/JZ owners, backing up to 332.60 looks like it stops the crashes, available from the G750JM download area

I recommend uninstalling Power4Gear, and using the Windows Power Plans, Balanced for most of the time, and High Performance for benchmarking.

Is anyone playing RTS games like Company of Heroes 2 or Rome TW2 on the G750JZ ?

On my first JZ (that I've sent back due to overheating) if I remember correctly, I've got around 60 FPS on the first mission in COH2 on the highest settings (Vsync and AA turned completely off), but now I only get 40-45 FPS.

I've tried different drivers and Win reinstall, nothing helped.

I also seem to lost some FPS in ROME 2, since I dont remember getting below 30 FPS previously in the Teutoburg Forest mission, but now I get 28-35 FPS on the highest settings.

Is it me or I just remember wrong and the result I'm getting now is in fact the correct one for the JZ ?

My Crysis 3 FPS is okay, in mather of fact, it maybe even 1-2 FPS better.

880M GTX is used during all games.

I bought a ASUS ROG G750JM and we're really impressed about the bad display.

As I have for compare a old G75 and a IPS desktop display I can say the display is absolutely unacceptable and much worse then the old ROG displays or other notebooks.

I had over the whole screen lines which hurts the eyes after some minutes...after checking the internet I found many threads about the vertical or horizontal lines.
Some said its a software issue, but with a new installation and many different driver versions I could say it's still there and the displays are just cheap and bad.
To exclude it's my notebook, I checked four more notebooks (middle variant + biggest variant) in shops which were demonstrated and I saw on ALL exactly the same issue.

How can people work on such displays??

Absolutely not understandable why they get inserted in a "high-end" notebook serie!
With the OLD series we had much better displays....two series before we had 3D and now cheap panels. UPGRADE?

I think anyone would pay 100-200 more if there just good IPS panels in this notebook, but NO, lets insert cheap panels from AUO..

Is there any schedule for the next ROG serie? I think earliest 2015 or? Any refresh planned?

archiv, it isn't the screen, it is the driver electronics. People have swapped screens to known good screens, and still had the lines. And, others have complained to Asus, RMA'd their laptop, and received back a laptop without the lines - so that is a good way to resolve the problem now, instead of waiting till 2015...

Besides the lines, the color correction can be improved by uninstalling Asus Splendid, and if you have a Chi Mei screen you can use these Color Profiles to correct the color, many have and like the results.

http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?36153-Personal-Color-Profile-for-the-Chi-Mei-173HGE&p=401664&viewfull=1#post401664

If you have been living with Asus Splendid for a while, it may take a few hours / days to decompress from the garish color correction - you want to do that first before installing the ICC Color Profiles :)

I have had a G750JW, JX, and now a JH - the first 2 were Chi Mei screens, and this JH has an AUO screen - and none of them had the lines. And, many others have received G750's without lines too.

I wouldn't swap the laptop with the vendor, as the lines problem seems to come in production batches, where out of spec parts were used, so it is best to RMA the laptop and be very specific about the lines, and the requested solution - a new screen driver board / motherboard that doesn't exhibit the lines.

Let us know how you work this out :)

Hi hmscott, thanks for you reply.

But you're speaking about the "old" variants JW, JX and JH with GTX 7 series?
I was speaking about the new JZ, JM and JS with GTX 8.

As I could see in reviews there different panels ?!

I don't know if I want to buy a Notebook for 2000€ to send it directly to RMA and wait many weeks till I got MAYBE a working one. Whats that?!

So are there some with lines and some without? If I would buy again one new with GTX 8, is it possible to get one without the lines?

I already thought about buying a "old" one with GTX 7 series. Maybe a JH with GTX 780. They are also cheaper.

archiv, yes the old and new G750's have the same mix of screens, and screen problems, but the % of lines in screens comes and goes, there were some in the old line and some in the new line, but most don't have the lines .

I thought you already had one with lines? If haven't tried one yet, how do you know they have lines? We haven't had many reports of lines on the screen for quite a while. Are you reading old postings?

If you want to be sure, pick up a G750 from a brick and mortar store, and open it there, that is what I did and I didn't find one with lines :)

Good luck, and let us know what you end up getting!

I do not want to use the stupid Intel integrated card at all but so far everything I have tried ahs not worked. Any Ideas guys??

I bought one in one of the biggest stores here...fresh from supplier. In Germany you can refund any article 14 days without any reason. I did this after I had tested the notebook and couldn't fix the annoying lines...I did reinstalled fresh Windows 8.1 from MSDN...

I don't know if I would try again and play lottery with displays. Staying for now with desktop pc...

Just receive my JS from amazon today, still downloading some games so no experience yet with Nvida/intel card switch. I did notice the screen is very bad. My old trusty Dell XPS has a better display than this. I did notice vertical lines, very close to each others. I guess these are the lines everyone is talking about. I can't believe it, this cost me $1,700 dolar plus taxes and the screen is subpar. If it's a software thing, why Asus is not pushing to get decent drivers? And, why is people complaining about Intel video card taking control of the games instead Nvidia? It should be automatic right? How do i know wich card my laptop is running when playing or working with my CAD apps?

Windows 8 is confusing and touch oriented, i don't know how long it will take me to get used to. If i keep this machine probably i will replace Win8 with Win7.

RipVanFit, a quick note to help you through the transition from Win 7 to Win 8, here are what I installed, and still use, to restore the Windows Start Menu, and gadgets.

ClassicShell

Between those two you can have the UI tools in WIndows 8 that we miss in Windows 7 (and before).

archiv, quite a while ago, a G750 owner did an install of Windows 8.1, and found that he could install everything except for Asus Splendid, and the video was much improved.

He found that once he installed Asus Splendid the video went bad, and even if he uninstalled Asus Splendid the video remained compromised.

He redid the clean install of Windows 8.1 and skipped installing Asus Splendid and he was back to a better video output. I don't recall if it reduced the lines or not, but he said the screen was much improved.

At the time no one duplicated his experience to confirm it.

Not yet. I order the machine for work and i already installed Photoshop because i need to finish some work left, so if i do a clean install should be next weekend. I play a little bit yesterday, installed Titanfall, fine tune the config using Nvidia Control Panel, i've played an hour more or less. Sistem is snappy, the game is not the most demanding one i know but this laptop barely get warm. I check the GPU temp after play, it was 64 C. Not bad for a warm and humid weather we have over here (30C in the shadow). I will install Rage later to see if the game pushes the GPU a bit more and see how the cooling system handles the load.

hmscott, thanks for the classicshell suggestion, i give it a try.

Regarding Asus Splendid, i will remove the program, restart, and check if the display still playing tricks with me.

Cheers.

Removing Asus Splendid is a good idea anyway, as it plays with the color correction - not in a good way. But to accomplish the effect that improved the screen video, it requires a clean Windows 8.1 install with Asus Splendid never being installed.

BTW, don't forget to make an Asus Backtracker 16GB flash drive to backup your recovery partition before blowing it away by doing a clean Windows 8.1 install.

I don't recommend doing this to anyone, as the Asus OEM Windows config/install works great, but if you want to see if you can get rid of the lines by doing a clean install, then be prepared to recover back to the Asus OEM install.

I don't think it will get rid of the lines, I think it is a hardware line driver problem, bad tolerance components, not even a screen problem, as others have tried replacing the screen and still had the lines even with 2 different new screens.

If you have bad lines on the screen the best thing to do is to return it and try the luck of the draw again. The other choice is to RMA it to Asus, as some have done and received back a laptop without screen lines :)

Sorry you got one with the lines... it's a great laptop otherwise.

Ok, Splendid has been removed, machine restarted and looks a little bit better (or maybe i'm getting used to), the lines are still visible if you see the screen really close, but if i move away, it is like the pixels were big enough to bee seen at a normal working distance...

I also tried to create a custom resolution using the nvidia control panel without luck. The nvidia control panel installed on my laptop didn't have the options. I'm using version 7.7.760.0 and my drivers are 337.88. If y enter the Advance Configuration of the screen resolution using Windows 8 change resolution software, it opens Intel screen configuration, not Nvidia. So, the system is using intel GPU for windows by default.

I really don't want to send the laptop back to Amazon or Asus to change the display or send me a new one. Probably i will get another low quality screen. That will be my last option since i bought the Laptop in USA and now i am back in Mexico, it will cost me a lot of money and time.

Did Asus really try to sell laptopts without Q&A dept checking all the machines? I'm really impressed with the quality of the Laptop, it is really good, the keyboard, internal components, cooling, performace, style, etc. Why did they sell this gaming beast with such displays knowing that people is complaining everywhere?

By the way, hmscott, thanks for all your help, i guess you are tired of giving advice and hear all the people complain over and over. I appreciate your support.

RipVanFit, not sure about Asus passing the laptops with screen lines, you would think the visual would be #1 on the QA check list --- maybe we should take up a collection and send the Asus QA department a box of reading glasses :)

The Optimus takes away refresh rate changes we recommended for improving the screen - color correction remains - if you have a Chi Mei screen (check with AIDA64 or hwinfo64) you could try the ICC Color Correction Profiles posted a while back:

http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?36153-Personal-Color-Profile-for-the-Chi-Mei-173HGE&p=401664&viewfull=1#post401664

I haven't checked the desktop scaling on the new JM/JS/JZ - if you go into the Display control panel, make sure it is on 0% magnify (smaller).

Check your temps under load, the JW/JX/JH used to all run without thermal throttling even under 100% CPU/GPU load, but some of the JM/JS/JZ are heating up too much and entering thermal throttling - which can be corrected by down clocking CORE 3 and 4 a bit, and you can make up the performance by up clocking Core 1 and 2 :)

I got a AU Optronics panel ( AUO219D ). The Laptop is not getting even warm in regular windows tasks like browsing. It reaches arond 70 C playing games like Titanfall. Windows is not scaling the display, the magnify is at 0%.

I have found other people with different screen problems:

This person sees very thick horizontal lines. I use to see very thin vertical lines. After removing Splendid and reboot the vertical lines are very difficult to see but still there if you look close. I also notice when playing, the display looks much better than back in windows. I don't know if it's because the graphics card ( Nvidia vs Intel ) or because things are moving fast inside games and there is a lot of colors and brightnes contrast.

I'm still not super happy with the display but i will try to wipe windows next weekend and see if it's help.

Cheers.

RipVanFit, glad to hear removing Splendid helped :)

What power plan are you on? Have you removed Power4Gear - it's also problematic - running Balanced Power Plan most of the time myself, with High Performance only for benchmarking.

The thick lines like that look like rendering problems, not screen/display problems - if the screen looks fine in that area under solid color / static image display, then what that is is a rendering issue. Nvidia driver related and/or game engine. Also, that is for the output through the Nvidia GPU, the Intel GPU isn't used for output / rendering as it isn't enabled in the JW/JX/JH.

You should get a handle on knowing which GPU is running when you are looking at the screen - but know that all display output goes through the Intel IGP, not the Nvidia GTX GPU - but of course the Nvidia rendering will look better than the Intel GPU rendering.

I am interested to hear if doing the Clean Microsoft Windows 8.1 install with out ever installing Splendid helps. One guy swore it did, but like I said it's been a long time since he posted, and no one since has taken the time to try it.

Let us know how it works out :)

The vertical lines, banding and flickering which people keep complaining about are present at most old and new lcd panels. I've compared my Chi Mei panel with an old Samsung 1280x1024 lcd monitor and a new LG fullHD 3D TV and the concerned 'problems" showed up on the TV and desktop monitor too, the only difference was that it was a little bit harder to spot on the monitor.

The monitor was hooked up to a desktop PC using NVidia GTX750 card.

why we are not allowed to configure the laptop when we want to buy a new one?

xcaetano, are you asking why we can't do a Custom Build for our G750 when ordering it?

Asus doesn't do that, but there are a number of Asus dealers that do Custom Builds.

The G750 has a soldered CPU, and a GPU that can't be upgraded, so besides memory, disk, and screen there aren't a lot of reasons for change.

Adding memory is easy, as is changing the disk, so you can do those yourself - search on this forum for information on how to do them - and read the downloadable pdf manual from the Download area for the model you are getting.

hmscott
06-29-2014, 11:43 PM

xcaetano, the RAM manufacturer and model varies from one production run to another, so you need to use a program like CPU-Z or hwinfo64 when you get your laptop to look at the SPD info, which will tell you the Manufacturer, model number, and other info.

You can read through this forum sticky thread on memory, either start from the end, or go all the way through to the end to get up to date info - some people used memory early on that said it was 1.35v but the SPD value was set to 1.5v, so it can't be used in the G750 - found out later in the thread. Maybe the game is trying to run on Intel video card, and that one has only 128MB.

Thanks AAndrei, i figured it out after reading some post problem of laptop sometimes cannot change from using Intel vga to dedicated VGA. Its a driver bug and seems like there are no solution at this time. I think i want to downgrade the OS to window 7 and sees how it will do.

Hey everyone. Just wanted to say, I am loving this ROG laptop! I bought my ROG G750JS-DS71 about 2 weeks ago now, and love it so far.... I had originally gotten an Alienware 18" laptop from Tiger DIrect, but they had screwed up on the specs they had posted on their website, so I returned it and got this one instead. So glad I did. It's a lot faster and overall better than the Alienware I had gotten. One question... I don't see the vertical lines everyone's talking about though... I kinda got cross-eyed tonight trying to see them on my screen lol. Is EVERYONE having this issue or just some people? Another thing. Why the heck are the hard drives partitioned the way the are on here? I mean, it's only a 256gb SSD that came with it, and it shows up as OS (C) 95.3 GB and Data (F) 121 GB, plus the two 465 GB partitions of the other hard drive. Just seems like a waste to partition the SSD like that.

Anyone know where can I find thermal pads like the ones Asus use in their G750 laptops? Light blue colored and jelly/thick sticky paste like consistency.

I own a G750jh. I wonder if it will be possible to send the pc to the tech wizards for a graphic card upgrade, since the other specs are not that different compared to a jz.

Vacceo, even better: the 880m is the same chip as the 780m, with a different vBIOS that increases the default clock speed by +30mhz - Simply OC your existing 780m using Asus GPU Tweak tool for Graphics cards!!

That is what I do, and my G750JH benchmarks faster than 880m's OC'd with Asus Tweak Tool for Laptops - the version for JM/JS/JH limits OC to +5% :)

Hi Guys. Is the G750 802.11ac compliant? Looking on the product page it just lists n, but surely a 2014 laptop has to support ac right? Hell my $2000 dollar macbook 2013 supports it so how can a $3500 dollar 2014 notebook not?! Also anyone know of a few stores in Sydney who sell the glossy 3D display model? Been running around in the city and aurburn today at the PC stores no one even knew there was a 3D model, let alone whether they can order it for me. Why is it ordering things in the states is so easy and here its like trying to find the raiders of the lost ark for crying out loud!

Just ordered my Asus G750JS-T4123H and its gonna get to me on Sunday early morning, hopefully after all the hype and reading lots and lots of Forums and threads here, I do have to appreciate a significant helper out here on every thread and yes hmscott, you are doing a fantastic job. Kudos to you friend, just wanna point it out. I just hope I don't get a single issue in my laptops, I have had worst experience with my Alienware 14x which I bought with alot of hope and it just broke down on motherboard and then the repairs after repair, until I finally got rid of it. Now I have a Yoga Pro 2 Ultra-book maxed out top of the range so yea cant play any games on that except its very flawless and need to replace my desktop with this beast. If it works out great am gonna get rid of the YP2 too, just wondering, but yes keeping my fingers crossed.

Hi guys, reporting back. The laptop is running flawlesly since day one. I haven't had the chance to backup my windows instalation to completely wipe windows 8 and install it back. The screen, i am now used to it and it is pretty much ok. Looks like removing the color management software do the trick at least for me. I live in a pretty hot and humid environment ( Cancun ) without AC and the JS runs pretty cool.

hmscott, thanks for all the help. If someone else needs some info regarding anything about the JS just ask.

Well I decided to change my order from Asus G750JS-T4123H to an ASUS ROG G750JZ –T4105H the JZ model is the top end with the highest possible specs till date. Mainly because I already had a plan to upgrade the memory on the JS to 32 GB and get an SSD, but then when I thought about it, I said why not go with JZ with the all the top end specs there is including the 4 GB GFX 880m, 4710HQ proc, 32 GB, 512 GB SSD + 1.5TB, etc so now this will most likely reach to me by Monday noon, having my fingers crossed again, lets see can't wait :)!!

I was inches away from buying the G750JM. Thank god i found this forum and didn't spend my hard earned money on this laptop that appears to have so many problems. I own an ASUS laptop but it's a much cheaper version and did good for last 3 years. Based on previous experience with ASUS i was ready to put my neck that they do great products, but now after i red many reviews of this (not so cheap laptop) it looks like they got rid of the quality control department or something. It's unacceptable to have so many issues with a 1200 euros device (the price in my country). You don't just take the best components out there and throw them in a laptop hopping to hit the jackpot. For this money has to be a pleasant experience for users not only by specs, but also with every other aspects, like looks, build quality, support. I guess its less likely to have a faulty device if i buy a second hand alienware.

I am not sure what problems are you referring to? Faulty Factory Machines or new machines without any hardware flaws. Ofcourse if the hardware is faulty there will be problems in the machine/performance as in all. However that's a very rare and minute level which you can expect from any Manufacturer, take it Alienware, MSI, Lenovo, any of those. Just to let you know I have had worst experiences with Alienware, MSI products, especially Alienware 7 month battle (motherboard issue after one day turning up laptop 2 months usage it just wont boot up) until the refund finally. I just got my G750JZ top end specs, have had zero flaws with it, and kept my fingers crossed when buying it, I have just uninstalled Splendid and that's about it. These machines are beasts as many before me say and yes the performance is just marvelous coming from a laptop and not a desktop to this extent where you wonder to through the desktop out if your not touching it at all and just keep this, the quality of laptop itself is amazing, much cheaper then Alienware and much effective to last more as well. All in all, any manufacturer can have defective products, however that's a rare chance.

Where I am, we usually get 5 min blackouts cause of the maintenance in the area going on, hence plugging in battery helps alot, by not only keeping your laptop up when the power goes, but sustaining from a total shut down of the laptop and all of its components, say if your gaming hard and it happens then def it can affect the laptop, I have had 8 hours usage on AC and had no issues whatsoever. However it all comes down to you, how you see fit. Normally I keep my battery in just for having a safe run.

Hi everyone!
I've purchased Asus G750JM few days ago (8gb ram, 750gb HDD), installed SDD Intel 520 (120Gb) from previous Asus G74SX as a boot drive, with ASUS Backtracker made SDD works on Windows 8.1 and everything was good...
But the problem is that BIOS not recognise HDD which I've put into HDD tray 1. BIOS was upgraded to 207 - no changes. Latest drivers on chipset are installed in Windows 8.1. Both hard drivers (750gb HDD and 120 gb SDD) are work in HDD tray 0, with no remarks. I've read all topics in this forum but it seems that some guys have problems only with cloning HDD/SDD, recovering Windows. etc. Is in possible that second HDD tray is not connected properly to the power supply?

P.S sorry for my English.

Hi, i have problem with my Asus ROG G750JM. I have installed Windows 7 x64. But GPU Tweak for Laptops not work. (I try app for Windows 8.1 but it crashes). Some help with this problem ? Thx.

mirecc21, Asus Tweak Tool for Laptops is a new version of the Asus Tweak Tool created for the JM/JS/JZ models of the G750 that have Intel GPU support / Optimus.

The JM (and JS/JZ) all came out supporting Windows 8.1, and have only recently released Windows 7 x64 drivers, but a Windows 7 x64 version of the Asus Tweak Tool for Laptops hasn't been released.

There never was a Windows 7 version of Asus Tweak Tool for Laptops, just a Windows 8.1 version.

There are Windows 7 x64 versions of Asus Tweak Tool for Graphics cards, but they won't work on your JM.

Right now it's back to Windows 8.1 if you want Asus Tweak Tool for Laptops and GPU fan control.

You could complain to Asus, and ask when the Windows 7 x64 version of Asus Tweak Tool for Laptops will be released, considering Asus has released Windows 7 x64 drivers, and Asus Tweak Tool for Laptops is the only way to enable Full Fan on the JM/JS/JZ Asus should release a Windows 7 x64 version...

xyz_cityhunter, a number of users have posted that after doing Windows 8.1 updates, updating all drivers to latest Windows 8.1 versions, and installing Nvidia 344.11, the BSOD's have gone.

There are some people that did their own Windows installs, blew away the Asus Windows install, and they are still getting BSOD's - so create an Asus Backtracker USB 3.0 flash recovery drive before blowing away the original recovery partition while doing your own Windows install :)

What was the answer to the Wifi model question?

xyz_cityhunter, the wireless seems to vary with model variant, so yes, ask them to read off what it is from the side of the box - the inventory list of components in the one they are actually shipping you.

The G750 back-light is single color white, which I like. Not so sure about the G751 Red light (better in the dark?) and Red color labeling, I will need to see it in person. Not a fan of disco lights on my laptop keyboard - too distracting, but I have built them into windowed desktops - both colored and white lighting - sound driven, like disco ;)

Let us know what you end up getting :)

Oh, single color white huh... The white color is kind of harsh on the eye when you're using it in a dark room, not sure if you can adjust the brightness of it but on my previous laptop which was the Lenovo Y580, there was no brightness control so it tends to be quite annoying. Might want to see the price range for the new G751 then only decide which one I would go for. I can live with the G750JM as I'm not a heavy gamer but that white keyboard might just have make me to reconsider the G751 which have the warmer red backlight, and also newer design... :p

xyz_cityhunter, you can set various levels of the backlight, including off, which is how I run it. I use an external keyboard with blue lighting, or a wireless keyboard with no backlight - been typing a long time, I find the backlight on every key is distracting, a simple home reference would be enough to center my hands on the right placement. When it is lighted I tend to look - which slows down my typing.

Some G751 models may be tough to get - IDK how many 970m/980m's are available, so if you find a configuration you like, snap it up right away :)

zoommircea, do you have the latest version of CPU-Z? Often 3rd party tools like CPU-Z, hwinfo, aida64, speccy, etc get something wrong. So it is good to have more than 1 such tool loaded to verify / compare readings.

Just because a tool like that gets something wrong, doesn't mean everything else is suspect, it just means humans are fallible :)

Send their support a note explaining the details as detailed as possible, what you have, what their tool is showing, and how it is wrong and what the right answer should be. And be persistent. If you don't hear back in 2 weeks, email or submit a report via their website again.

It took me 1 year to get Futuremark to change the details on the 4700HQ to correctly list the specs - they had crossed it up with the 4700MQ. It took 4-5 months to get fixed, they did email me several times in between explaining why they couldn't fix it right away - some guy was on a long vacation - then the guy came back and fixed it - about 6 months later I noticed it was wrong again - they had a crash and a restore and restored the bad info :)

Try a couple of other tools as mentioned above, and let us know which ones are correct.

TechPowerUp GPU-Z is most likely to get it correct, they focus on GPU's, and have an ROG skinned version:

open the panel at the bottom and verify the model of the ram and buy the same exact version from amazon or another trusted source. I had the 8 GB version and bought two 4 GB sticks with the same model number. Hmscott or another user may have more info on using different brands.

I just purchased a refurbished g750js-ds71 and my average CPU temp is about 65C but then under a load it has spiked to around 99C. My 870 is fine its normal temp is about 35 then peaks at about 75 which is what i expect. My G74 runs at about 45C. I feel like 65 and 99 pretty hot should I return it for another?

My 870 is fine its normal temp is about 35 then peaks at about 75 which is what i expect. My G74 runs at about 45C. I feel like 65 and 99 pretty hot should I return it for another?

Mulln8er, 99c is too hot, the CPU throttles around 93c/94c, so your CPU performance is drastically reduced.

If you can return it to the seller for another do that, otherwise ask Asus to RMA for re-paste to reduce CPU temp.

https://vip.asus.com <== create login, register laptop, file Technical Inquiry with details, examples, screen shots of temps - zip up and attached zipfile to Technical Inquiry.

Please come back and let us know how it works out :)

Hi!

Do you can explain to me what are these functions, on my Power4Gear (ver. 3.0.8) panel? I have a G750JZ. Thanks in advance!

Symho, I actually recommend uninstalling the Power4Gear package, and use the Windows Power plans.

The High Performance Power plan works good for benchmarking or batch work that you need to complete as quickly as possible - it runs the CPU 100%/100% for best performance but it runs hotter because it never lets the CPU downclock and cool off when not under load.

For most of the time I recommend using the Windows Balanced Power plan with CPU Min/Max set to 0%/100% which gets good interactive performance and lets the CPU downclock and cool down. Draws less power as well, but doesn't shutdown the performance. Power Saving Plan for Battery use if you are trying to get the most battery time.

Power4Gear installs it's own equivalent plans and the tool/app forces moving from one to the other when it thinks they best apply, but for me it forces them too often and at inappropriate times. Some people find the CPU speed is held back too much for their usage.

The Power4Gear GUI lets you set the power gross settings for AC and Battery, but not the usual fine tuning settings of the Windows Power Plans dialogs.

I don't speak Italian - and I don't have it installed so I can't read the settings labels in English, I would hope that what they say is clear :)

You will find better performance overall by uninstalling P4G and use the Windows power plans, tuning the settings through the Plan advanced settings.

The worst offense P4G made to me was forcing Power Saving when unplugging, and then not kicking the power back up when I plugged it in. I had already set my Windows Power Plans Advanced tuning for battery/AC usage on all the plans - so when the P4G changed the plans to it's own, and then made arbitrary movement between the plans with no way to set use of the my tuned plans, I just uninstalled it.

Let us know what you end up doing and how you figure out to use it well, for me there wasn't a good way to configure it to my liking. :)

Hi hmscott! Thank you for your suggestion! And sorry for my poor english. I need high performance for my work, I'm an architect and I work with many softwares at the same time! Softwares are: 3DS Max, Autocad, Photoshop, Office, ecc. With the Asus's power plan I have good work with my laptop so do you think that's Windows power plan is it better for consumption or for the cpu's life?

P.s. (Off topic) When I login into the forum by IE11 the panel of the editor of text is white. Why???

Symho, you can't do higher performance than 100%/100% :)

Windows High Performance with Advanced settings CPU Min/Max is set to 100%/100%.

The P4G just adds in some automatic swapping of plans, and disabling of devices - if set to allow power down for power savings - which can cause Wifi / Ethernet disconnects at odd times as well.

If performance is important to you then I would also suggest using Intel XTU to set the CPU core cache multipliers to highest from default.

Change the settings, Apply, Save and name profile.

Intel Extreme Tuning Utility - XTU - Currently at 5.1.2.2 - I am using 5.1.1.25
https://www-ssl.intel.com/content/www/us/en/motherboards/desktop-motherboards/desktop-boards-software-extreme-tuning-utility.html

That 5.1.2.2 release came out today, April 1st... :)

Update: To be safe, uninstall the old XTU if you have it installed, before installing the new release.

Have fun!

Symho, as I updated, I had a problem installing over 5.1.1.25 - you might want to make sure you uninstall the old one before installing the new one.

After I uninstalled the 5.1.1.25 release cleanly, I was able to install the new 5.1.2.2 release, and it is working aok so far. :)

Symho, good to hear, it must have been something else going on, I got install errors. It's working fine now after uninstalling the old version for me.

Additionally, I've just published a Full HD 60fps video on youtube; recorded gameplay, edited with the in-game Rockstar Editor; the video demonstrates the G750 power very well...
