Hello, I am new here and I am having a problem with my laptop. I purchased it 1/23/13 and 30 days after purchase, Windows crashed on me and I needed it re-installed. The same thing is happening right now. I feel that this model (G75VW 2012) shouldn't have Windows 8 or 8.1. After I updated it last night and restarted it, it wouldn't let me go pass the log in page. I type my password in and it says welcome. After a minute or two, the screen goes black and I get an error message WINSPOOL.DRV. I tried booting it into safemode and it just won't let me. The best buy geek squad guy tried running it from an install disk and couldn't log in. I think this computer needs to be downgraded to Windows 7. What do you all think? Is it possible for me to get it started to just at least get my music and pictures?

Mine came with Windows 7 but I really enjoy Windows 8.1 and had no trouble, I installed an Ssd and set it up to dual boot 7 & 8.1.

Good luck, you can always take out the hard drive and put it into another machine to get your files unless you encrypted it.

Mine also came with windows 7, I clean installed window 8.1 Pro. I was lucky enough that when I bought mine it came with an offer to upgrade to Win 8 Pro for $14.95.
If you have a legit win 8 key, you should have no problems Clean Installing Win 8.11 yes the new ISO have the latest update. You need to go to the Asus Support Download and download the win 8 drivers and win 8.1 drivers.
Here is link showing you how to download an ISO (http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?40101-FYI-Download-8.1-ISO-from-Microsoft-Store&country=&status=)
You may need to use a Generic Key to install the OS. Once Installed you activate using your legit key that you own.
Here are the Generic keys
Windows 8.1 Single Language Y9NXP-XT8MV-PT9TG-97CT3-9D6TC
Windows 8.1 Core 334NH-RXG76-64THK-C7CKG-D3VPT
Windows 8.1 Pro XHQ8N-C3MCJ-RQXB6-WCHYG-C9WKB

Would it be possible to have a clean install of windows 7 on the computer? I would really prefer it than windows 8. Could it mean that my hard drive is bad? I did try and do that. My mom has a toshiba and I switched the drives and nothing. It wouldn't start up. Neither of the laptops would. Let me try it with my step dads laptop as he has a newer one than my mom and I think it may work with his.

yes if you have a window 7 product key, you can install windows 7, your getting to the log in screen you hard drive might not be the problem. Download the win 7 driver from Asus support downloads (http://support.asus.com/Download.aspx?SLanguage=en&m=G75VW&p=3&s=388) You will have to go into the BIOS and turn secure boot off and enable CSM, then Install your copy of win 7 if that's what you want to do. Your not going to save your data , I would copy your data to another hard drive on another computer

I mostly just have pictures on there and I want them. How can I get them off of my hard drive if I can't do anything with the computer? I think American express wants an estimate of what it is going to cost to fix it, and they are going to repair it. I honestly don't know. Can I still install windows 7 even if it has windows 8.1? I think Windows 7 is 94 dollars. Is this copy okay? http://www.amazon.com/Windows-Premium-64bit-System-Builder/dp/B004Q0PT3I/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1388529428&sr=8-1&keywords=windows+7 And you are positive my computer can run windows 7? It came installed with windows 8.

You cannot just swap your mothers computer drive and your, they are set to boot with different hardware drivers. You can either get a cheapo USB to SATA case or attach it in a desktop temporarily. It cannot replace the boot drive.

Another option is a live Linux DVD or USD drive. These boot into Linux and do not install to the hard drive. You can the copy the files to another drive or the same USD drive if you set it up for that

Okay, I'll buy a cheap SATA connector off of eBay or something. At least I can back up my pictures and music. That's really the only thing on their other then re-downloadable games like league and star craft. :)

I will give 7 a go. It would be about 51 dollars out of my pocket after the gift cards. I think it would be worth it :). So if I get windows 7, can I not just format my hard drive after I transfer everything I want to the computer and put it into my computer with the windows 7 disk and install it with a clean fresh install? Or do you think I should get a brand new hard drive?

Could it be my laptop itself is just bad? It shouldn't have crashed twice in the year and four months I had it. Do you think asus will send me a refurbished or new one if I complain?

I don't think Asus will send you an new or rebuilt notebook over a crashed windows OS,
Have you contacted Asus support?
If you suspect that your hard drive is defective, go to the manufactures web site and download there Hard drive utility testing program that will tell you is you have a defective Hard drive.
You can run win7 You'll find Guides and our notes on how to accomplish this in this thread (http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?28758-GUIDE-G55-G75-Upgrade-Notes&country=&status=)

When you say test the hard drive, you mean when I get the SATA cable and have it plugged into my moms computer?

Yes, bestbuy said to install the drivers onto a flash drive and drag them to the hard drive or something.

Clintlgm

Yes you would plug it into you moms computer as an external drive and test it that way. While you have connected to your mom's computer would be a good time to copy you Data Pic's etc to your moms hard drive so that you can clean install with out losing your data

I can't speak for BB, but I think they might has told you to download the latest drivers to a Flash drive, but there not going to do you any good unless you can boot up windows

And I was going to clean install windows 7 to my laptop after I transfer what I want and format it. After it's formatted, I am going to install windows 7. Since it hopefully will boot up to windows, I will be able to install the drives with the flash drive. :)

This is a clean install of Win 7 on a VX, Since you VW came preinstalled with Win 8 this should be helpful (http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?29983-Clean-Windows-7-on-Asus-G75VX-(Win8-pre-installed))
Since you have a VW win 7 drivers are available use the one Asus Suppor Dowload (http://support.asus.com/Download.aspx?SLanguage=en&m=G75VW&p=3&s=388)first these are all tested and approved drivers

Unfortunately, my drive is dead. It froze Best Buy's machine. It is unreadable and I can't transfer anything. :(.

I have it under warranty through American Express, but in order to get it fixed, I needed a written quote. It was going to take 3-4 weeks just to get that. :/ so I said don't because then I needed to have my laptop "sent out" and just decline it and that is the quote. I couldn't wait. I needed my laptop. I went and purchased one myself. I then emailed American Express and explained how I can't wait for the written quote and repair it (well over a month). So, I said that I was told it would probably be about $270.00 for a repair, but I'm fixing it myself for only 103.79 with a faster and better hard drive. So how can they say no to reimburse me? I am SAVING them 170 dollars. lol

I'm not sure entirely what drivers to install, but I installed 11 of them. I'll screen shot the ones I downloaded. Would you be able to tell me which ones I need/missing? :)

I would buy this copy of Windows 7 Home Premium - 64bit, DVD (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5213932&CatId=4622) from Tigerdirect.com.($89.99)
Just download Win7 drivers from Asus support page for your G75VW, or you can use driver support disk that came with your model. (see guide below)
Here's a guide below to help with the Windows7 install (don't worry about VX model, will be okay for Winows7 install)

Why is my screen changing it's brightness? When a lighter page is open, it's brighter, when a darker page is open (like the forum) it goes dim. It's very odd. It was doing this before it broke, too.
