Hello, I'm about to replace my old desktop rig with the G74SX.
Here in Finland these things are sold in models named as:

G74SX-TZ175V
This comes with 160 GB SSD + 750 GB 7200 RPM
And blu-ray.

G74SX-TZ099V
This comes with 750 GB 7200 RPM
And blu-ray

G74SX-TZ052V
This comes with 500 GB 7200 RPM and DVD combo

All of these models come with 17.3" FHD/i7-2630QM/8GB ram and 560GTX with 3gb of ram (192-bit doh), so not much
of imagination is used in these different versions sold around here. No integrated
3D+matte screens etc. Just these minor differences listed above.

Gonna go with the most torn down version since I have SSD ready and waiting and I have no need for blu-ray.

Is this a good time to buy G74SX as it is? There's been some rumors that they would possibly drop prices (this month?) and include more efficient CPU in the same price as the G74SX-TZ052V is currently sold (1399 at Finland, and yup, cheapest possible). This however might be a totally different thing here @ europe and local market of Finland than U.S etc...

Of course this doesn't make THAT huge overall difference to the decision whether to buy it now or wait for some improved version to hit stores...

Im not too worried about all the problems that this rig might have, it has sold itself already to me by the looks, the efficient cooling system etc. Can't wait to get one.

Oh and one more question, only game I've played for a long time is WoW, and I think that IF I get lost on that path again, this rig will run it nice and smooth? Everything else is extra, since I'm just looking for the most efficient (but yet reasonably priced) replacement for my old desktop, watch 1080p movies etc...

Oh my desktop btw. is, or was about 3 years old E6750@3.6GHz with 4GB and ati HD5750, and im expecting this rog rig to beat in everything hands down?

Thanks for reading and specially for any possible answers to my silly questions.

It might be well in your interest to wait a month or two. Retail sales are not exactly booming, and the markets in general are not doing too well so price cuts could very well be coming.

Incidentally, I put an intel ssd and a momentus XT hybrid drive into the g74 i got a few days ago. It truly is a desktop replacement with the ssds in it. The laptop now does everything as quickly as my desktop i7 920 on a gigabyte m/b and 12 gig ram. You will love it.

Prior to installation the mechanical drives were the bottleneck and keeping my windows experience score at 7.1. With the new drives, my graphics card of all things are keeping the score at 7.1!

I would wait, too.

In the meantime, read these forums and familiarize yourself with the issues and how to fix them. ;)

Sorry to hijack, but I'm wondering how you got a score of 7.1 for the previous drives? Win7 always gives me a score of 5.9 for the primary HDD, which in this case is a Seagate 500GB SSD hybrid. FWIW, my desktop with 7200rpm drives was also only ever to get a 5.9 max for the primary drive. My video score for both tests is 7.2.

you'd have to ask windows. I have to run out for a bit, but i will run it again to make sure and report back little later today.

Thanks. FYI, here's the actual output from the winSAT disk assessment. I see it runs a -hybrid test and says NV cache not present? Weird, not sure what that's about...

EDIT: The -hybrid test and no NV cache is referring to the lack of a ReadyBoost device.

Hybrid drives are still detected as mechanical, ergo 5.9 max.

Not so sure about that. I have Intel SSD 120 gig and 500 gig Maxtor XT hybrid installed. Windows gives 7. 5 to drive(s) with this setup.

Yahooligan, I swapped the original drive back into this (everything is still on that drive) and re-ran the win exp. The score was 5.9 so my bad on that. Anyhow, funny now that the graphic card is now the limiting hardware.

Hmm, seems like my thread got a bit off-topic.. But anyway.
I was at the shopping mall today and there happened to be some Finnish Asus-representative, so I asked him about it and he confirmed the following:

(Don't know if there's been any discussion about this here yet.)
At least in Finland the cheapest model G74SX-TZ052V is gonna get upgrades @ middle of november, CPU is going to be the bit faster 2670QM, and blu-ray drive is going to replace the dvd combo in the cheapest model too, thus giving a bit more bang for the buck. Nothing world exploding here, though...
And I don't think I can live without "my personal rig" for that long... ;)

Just keep in mind those upgrades aren't going to be free, the price will change to reflect the drive and CPU so the cheapest model may still be the cheapest model but it will be more expensive than it is now.

Ok, bumping this one...
This question remained Yet unanswered:

I just might add my question here too...
Still having the "order" button on hold for a perhaps better equipped and equally priced G74SX as promised. But anyway...

If the model is equipped with 1 HDD, can I just throw another HDD/SSD there, or do I have to get some flat cables/frame to fill the other HDD bay?

And one more question, I already have an SSD for the machine, Kingston HyperX 120gb sata-III, anyone had any problems with this one? Yeah its the infamous sandforce 2xxx...

Thx for any answers.

New: next week there's gonna be a better equipped model at almost same price!
Cpu 2630 -> 2670, dvd combo -> blu-ray, and 500gb hdd -> 750gb ;)
Minor cpu boost but hey, still an upgrade.

The unit still has 2 HDD bays, so you can add a 2nd HDD. You may need to acquire a hdd bracket for it.
