This case mod will be a tribute to the "firefly" Sci-fi series and SERENITY movie. I will draw my inspiration from interior shots of the "firefly" ship. Imagining if the PC was field equipment used by the characters. The case I'll be using is Corsair's 400R mid tower. Here is their product page, http://www.corsair.com/pc-cases/carbide-series-pc-case/carbide-series-400r-mid-tower-case.html

Made switch box for mounting a pair of fighter pilot toggle switches, this will be mounted on the top handle of the corsair 400R

Bending toggle switch box

Stay tunes, I'll be starting on the side panels and adding more features to the switch box....

Man, oh man oh man oh man. I am SO sub'd to this!

10-12-2011, 12:57 AM
Bill you need to slow down man . . . ;)

I like where this is going

Thanks for tuning and commenting everybody! Yes, I'm juggling between projects again...lol ...in preparation for CES, January 10 -14 , and I'll be there as well, showing some of my products and previous work. So please let me know if you're attending, so I can finally meet you in person, esp you, Darth!

Ok, back to this project. Sorry! to anyone anticipating this to look like the ship, or see a model of the serenity glued on top. My tribute is inspired by visual elements from both the movie and series that appeal to me, in particular "Our Mrs reynolds" episode, which has great scenes of Serenity's bridge. (and christina hendricks) To me, the charm of the Serenity is the mixture of Old West and industrial tech, and sometimes these elements look hobbled together. You can tell the Set builders delved into Ebay for salvaged Electronic and Ham Radio parts. I also love how everything is distressed from use and weathered. The ship's control panel is a mess...lol

Yes, the circa 60s Muscle car hood scoop style panel hump is being removed.. btw: Great for cable management behind MB tray.

I can already tell that it's going to be a blast "managing" the cables in such a way that is both effective but looks like messy patchwork!

10-14-2011, 07:58 PM
Looks good, I thought you were going Bridge Style with it just from the switches. We know you do good work.. so no worries. Will be watching this one.

10-14-2011, 08:05 PM
Where did you get those pictures....I'd like to see more of the stuff they used like the Yeasu Mic with Repeater keypad in the lower left of the lower left pic....

10-14-2011, 10:23 PM
i like it.

Hey check out my Serenity Photobucket folder, it may help you some..

Thanks for the support! Left side panel progress... Everything will be colored to match the panels from firefly's deck, then distressed and weathered with Copper accents, graphics from interior of firefly will be airbrushed.. side panel was created from interior of an old Dremel carry case, with wire loom, 5" conduit, 3.5" fan controllers, misc wires, misc LEDs bulgin panel LED...

Excellent Work!...are you sure you don't make Props for Movies?

10-21-2011, 08:19 AM
Well ****, look at that!

That is looking better than I expected, and I expected a lot. Great work, I am waiting excitedly for the next update.

10-27-2011, 12:35 PM
thanks for tuning and commenting guys. I know... it looks way too clean. I have to fab everything first, before it can get paint effects. The updates have been a little sparse. I'm working on 4 different vendor display PC builds for CES, AND preparing to show my billet case accessories in person. on the Main Floor!!! So, if you're attending CES, Jan 10th - 14th, Drop by and say "Hi"

Everything looks clean atm, so ignore that..haha... Round Modders Mesh for the grills in the side.

I worked on the access panel for this project yesterday... The Mesh was epoxied with ScotchWeld DP-190, the strongest 2 part adhesive I've ever found in my 10 years of Modding. Yes, it bonds metal, but for decoration only.. It won't handle autobody work..haha

and You need 3M's Applicator

I did find 1/4" copper tubing at Home depot, so I'll be re-creating those liquid lines. painted the 2nd panel, Matte Black and installed 1/4" wide u-channel, used as trim around fan holes, sold for xbox 360 shells, but also works on PC panels.

I love it .... BTW would you look into building me a new Interstellar Cargo Cruzer next?

11-02-2011, 10:33 AM
haha, that would be sweet!

I didn't see a pipe bender for 1/4" OD copper tubing at Home Depot, but I think I can stuff the soft copper tube with bicycle brake cable cover, to prevent the tube from collapsing as I bend it around a pipe. I want to achieve 90 degree bends. We'll try this afternoon at the shop.

11-02-2011, 11:58 AM
Good Idea, also Home Depot has online ordering with pickup at your local store now...I seen the Ad for that at my local Store and they do have a lot more online...They seem to be following Wolly Worlds example...

11-02-2011, 04:21 PM
Bill you should post some videos of your modding . . .

11-03-2011, 12:35 AM
Haven't had time for editing videos, sorry! and I didn't have a lot of time today to experiment with my tube bending idea. Here are the 120mm Aerocool fans I painted last night with Rustoleum's Metallic Copper, #1937830. The multi fan blade design fits the antique copper. This paint looks surprisingly realistic, and doesn't smudge like the fake Chrome effect paint. I'm going to airbrush the edges of fan frame and blade hub, to give it aged look, hopefully Thursday night.

Wow, that paint looks awesome! I just used some metallic paint last week and I wish I'd used that stuff!

11-03-2011, 08:09 PM
lol @ DB's post... I know...

@x, got it at Home depot....and regarding the fans, you can remove the internals of the fans by removing the retainer ring, hidden beneath manufacturer sticker on back, here is DIY guide... http://prodmod.wordpress.com/2007/02/12/take-apart-that-pc-fan-see-whats-inside-brushless-dc-motor/

I have mounted a piece channeled aluminum I scrapped from an old chassis. 1/4" OD copper tubing will route the wires for gum drop LEDs in window frame, back the junction box. I inserted bicycle brake cable sheath into the copper tubing, to prevent the tube from collapsing as I bent it around a screw driver handle, propped in bench vise...

screenshot taken from this PDF I found! ......wishing there was stickers

found out this morning on facebook, the SKULL image, (2nd from top) states "RISK" in Arabic ....OK, I can use that one, but I need to somebody who can read Kanji! No clue what any of that says and I don't wanna insult anyone! .....I presume the show designer already thought of this...haha

Here is an outstanding deal, LCD Temp Meter with thermo sensor and Molex, $7.88 Shipped, on Ebay. and It works great, and I didn;t have to wait 6 months for it to arrive from China. It only took 1.5 weeks

Ebay Link,

Here it is, mounted on the top Power panel for this build (more pics to come), but would be easy to mount in 3.5 bay face plate.

The paint effect on this gun is pretty close to what I'm striving for on exterior....Except the case edges will expose steel.

I went over the edges of Corsair's factory "grey" finish on the panels and top cover with an orbital sander, then painted everything Flat Black, after that cures, I'll go over the surface with red Scotch brite pad, and some of the edges with 80 grit sandpaper.

After paint has cured, carry handle area is scuffed to show high usage over time.., the top portion of the handle is plastic, so dabbed Aluminum Silver paint along edge, then lightly scuffed it with scotch brite pad, to create illusion of exposed steel beneath the paint...

I'm going to try printing the graphics from the Serenity PDF (http://blog.quantummechanix.com/backgrounders/Serenity_Ref_Pack_Backgrounder.pdf) on adhesive printer paper.. I've pasted different sizes, I won't be using all of these, just wanted a variation for experimentation. The clarity and sharpness isn't detrimental, since the surface and edges will be weathered with airbrush, then cleared with matte clear...

11-09-2011, 05:52 PM
Good Idea, but how are you going to get the edges smoothed out...I've never gotten a Sticker not to look like a sticker but I've heard some people have or are you going for the sticker effect?...

progress work on top panel... the tape over the switch will be cherry on top, when everything is assembled ;)

for anyone else considering these Avery brand "Clear Sticker" Printer sheets ...You can buy from Amazon or "some" Office Supply Stores,

product link page,

1. Int doesn't smudge. I used Inkjet Printer
2. Works good on acrylic or plexi windows

1. Dull Color Matte Finish
2. Doesn't stick well to painted surfaces. (I had to use 3M Super 77 adhesive spray)
3. Anything colored White in your design, translates to Clear "see thru" instead, once it's printed.
4. Cost. 10 sheets for $13.99

For this project, which has distressed and weathered theme, they worked great. I could see using them for a custom window design, if youre OK with dull coloring...Otherwise I wouldn't suggest them for anything else.

I see you were looking for the Sticker Look...and your aging treatment looks great! I'm glad you have a CNC mill available other wise I would never be able to do that panel but the flame coloring is a great idea...gives a look of being used and overheated many times...

11-14-2011, 10:47 PM
Thank you! I'm looking forward to experimenting with the Copper finish.....

of course, you've gotta have "BLUE SUN" implemented too! This Fan Grill design is by Roboduck! and will be milled from 3/16" aluminum. This will mount on the rear exhaust for the 400R chassis.

Me too! ebay is great source

Here is progress on right panel. Yesterday, I created the effect of peeling and scratched paint. I dabbed the edges on the side panel with PlastiKote's #207 Aluminum "Engine Enamel" Silver paint. Sprayed onto paper sheet, then dabbed onto paint brush... Steps to follow include Painting along the edge of the Silver painted chips and scratches, to create illusion of layered paint. ...like this image (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_iDLVe_BT-54/S8jHOS0IDXI/AAAAAAAAA6Y/PtS_t8U8CSY/s1600/IMG_2181.JPG) More weathering and graphic references from firefly will be implemented this week. I'll also be using Sophisticated Finishe's Rust effect products for adding a rust to areas of the exterior.

I dabbed the steel screws, panel and modders mesh (http://www.mnpctech.com/moddersmesh.html) with Sophisticated Finishes surface effect products to add a rust effect. It only requires 2 steps, Apply their Iron Metallic Surfacer first, then Rust Antiquing Solution. The sooner you apply the Rust, the more Orange looking it will be.

.... still work in progress. I'm learning new tricks as I move along as well. I will fine tune the weathered and distressed effects, so they're not a stark contrast to everything else atm. It's a process of creating first, then breaking it down. I'm focusing on 1 element, let that process cure, then go back to earlier stages...like the Switch holes for example, I'm still working on making them look worn and smooth, not scratched up. I'll post progress photo of those next. :)

I added just a dab to the fan controller box on the right panel...

I'm still working on making them look worn and smooth, not scratched up.

Someone suggested the use of rub 'n buff for this kind of thing as well. You knock down the base coat with a tint or even just flat black and then use the rub n buff to make it look like certain areas are worn and shiny. It comes in a variety of metallic tones. Not sure if this is of interest to you, but I figured I'd mention it. Example below (not my work (http://www.instructables.com/id/The-Hearsch-Angocoellum-Rifle-A-functional-Steam/step9/Painting-the-Plastic/))

Current stage of the side panels. Next step is fine tuning the weathered and distressed effects with an Airbrush

Last night I went over my initial weathered and distressed paint effects with an Airbrush. Anything that contrasted a lot, I muted with Matte Black, like the fan blades, copper tubing, decals, shiny toggle switches on the fan controller and screw heads. I also airbrushed the edges of Silver Aluminum paint, which I used to created the chipped and scratched paint beneath.

Hey Darth, I'm presuming Corsair's suite, I don't know which hotel yet..

In the firefly verse, "Shiny" is slang for "cool" "great", "neat", "wonderful", etc.

Nathan Fillion

"SHINY" plate design for 5.25 Optical will be milled from 3/16" thick Copper.

Going over areas of the right side panel with airbrush, using Flat Black, over saturated with Thinner.. to weather or "mute" some of coloring in the decals, wiring, and smaller copper tubing

what's great is due to the nature of the design, not cleaning it will make it look even better. lol.

Exactly! :)

11-22-2011, 02:56 PM
You can set that machine on my desk any day! just remember you might need a Warp Drive to catch it!...

11-22-2011, 04:33 PM
Thanks for your continued tuning in and commenting DC! I don't wanna ship this one off, I want to keep it :D hahaha...Ok, for the lower two 5.25 bays, installing Alphacool's LCD, 240x128 Pixel Blue Negative. Making a "distressed look" overlay applique for the screen. LCD will have Heads-Up Display with current system stats, Logos and images from firefly, including the Allied Spacecraft Crest logo, all programmed by Toby Kirkby aka tobyak ...and best quotes from the Serenity Movie and firefly series, like "Did the primary buffer panel just fall off my gorram ship for no apparent reason?!" :duh:

fyi: performance-pcs sells the Silver version of Alphacool LCD (http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=53_70_680&products_id=20561) for $50 less than Black one, so save $$$ and paint it Black! :thumb:

this has made me think, doing one based on older star trek stuff would probably come out pretty awesome. think like star trek 1 (movie) era. a klingon mod could be pretty cool too.

i really dig what you're doing with the LCD front panel. how programmable are those things?

11-22-2011, 06:37 PM
Yea MonsterMawd, I love it! and I'm learning a few tricks from you doing this, who knows maybe one day I'll come close to doing something like this...But first I gotta learn how to use an Airbrush....

Flamed Copper "SERENITY" in Kanji, 240 grill installed.... knicked & painted socket head screws and dry brush painted the inside / outter edges of the grill....

UPS misrouted the LCD, it won't arrive till Monday.I had rare opportunity to bring the PC over to Radar Studios (http://www.briangarrity.com/) for Brian Garrity to take photos, but it had to be tonight. So, to fill the three empty bays, on limited Holiday time today, I'm gonna improvise and use Honeycomb Modders Mesh (http://www.mnpctech.com/moddersmesh.html) over the factory 5.25 bay covers, which fits overall theme nicely. I'll paint them Copper and applied "weathered" effect too.

11-25-2011, 01:10 PM
That's a DAM GOOD !! Idea for airflow!!!...I'm going to use that for my build, only I'm thinking of planting a couple fans in the bay...I'm a fan of Positive Pressure Airflow...BTW I'm not sure if you observe Turkey Day where you are But if so I hope it was as fantastic as this Mod...!

11-25-2011, 04:28 PM
Thank you Bro!

I arrived at the shop after Turkey Time, I had 2 hours to mod before I had to be at Brian's studio for photos. 1st thing, Finish the Honeycomb Modders Mesh (http://www.mnpctech.com/moddersmesh.html) 5.25 bay cover, then paint it Copper. Next thing was painting the 1/4" thick Copper "SHINY" plate with "aged" effect. For the 3rd open bay, I grabbed an Logysis 5.25 Bay Fan Controller. I knicked it's bezel edges and the screen with my Dremel and a cutting discs, then painted the edges Silver, for an exposed metal effect. Once everything was installed, I did final touch-ups with a paint brush. I glanced at the clock, I had 10 minutes before 7pm, and took these two pics of these mods with my phone, before leaving for Brian's studio.
