I have this issue with my fairly New G750JS. Running Windows 8.1

G750JS sleeps when the lid is closed while playing a game. If I leave the notebook open it does not sleep.

I'm using an external monitor via HDMI
It is not a temperature issue. Machine is well ventilated
Issue occurs with both the Power4G app installed and removed.
I am running performance power profile and disabled all sleep option with Lid closed.

I am running the latest drivers for notebook and video card.

I even tried app Dont Sleep.. Still sleeps.

Event Logs show the following 2 event s at time of sleep:

The browser has forced an election on network \Device\NetBT_Tcpip
Sleep Reason: Application API

I have disable the power management on network card and still no luck.

Should I return my notebook for repair?

Thanks Darnassus. But I had already done this as explained " I am running performance power profile and disabled all sleep option with Lid closed."

Tonight I will try a clean boot. Disable all startup items and services. My last attempt. Unless someone has something else to add.

check the temperature. Some of it also is released via the keyboard area. If this accumulates it could lead to overheating = auto shutoff

Maxter. The machine doesn't shut down it just goes to sleep eg. game is still running and I resume mid game after turning back on.. If I have it open to the point where the keyboard doesn't light up (Still closed based on internal contacts it goes to sleep. Open 3mm more were keybnoard lights up and It doesn't shutdown. So I don't believe it is heat related to the keyboard closed.

I did a clean boot. Turned off all startup program and disabled all services except for Steam which was needed to run game.

The Game ran and had no shut down issue with keyboard closed. Now I need to determine what is causing the sleep issue. Trial and error.

I will post further results.

I am having the exact same issue with my G750JS. It has even been sent off for RMA but the issue still persists even after they replaced the whole MB. It only happens during a game it has never went to sleep on the desktop. I have done all of the exact same measures you have in my attempt to fix the sleep issue. I have even tried different monitors and display cables. I have yet to narrow down the source of this weird glitch. PLEASE HELP!!!

golferdrew32, I haven't seen a solution for this yet.

You can try to make the main desktop on the external monitor and then disable the laptop monitor. You would run with the laptop screen up, but off.

Please let us know if that works :)

Unfortunately that doesn't solve the problem either. :( I have set my external monitor to be the main display and turned off the laptop built in display and still experience the sleeping issue when the laptop is both "open" and "closed". It also randomly sleeps even when I extend the two displays together. The only time I don't experience the random sleeping issue is when I am running a game solely on the laptop's built in display. It occurs in a multitude games including Metro 2033, TombRaider, and Titanfall just to name a few.

BELOW IS A SCREEN SHOT THE EXACT SYSTEM SHUTDOWN EVENT THAT IS OCCURRING

I have been struggling with something very similar for a few days and I just stumbled upon this thread.

I have a G750JW and it also sleeps when under heavy load. I thought it was a temperature issue while encoding video. The laptop sleeps around the same time every time I encode. I have been monitoring my temps and while it gets up as high as 90c there was really no reason it should be sleeping. I tried removing the nvidia drivers, installing older drivers, reinstalling new drivers, installing the ASUS power manager . . . but nothing has helped! I read this thread and decided to open the lid and unplug my HDMI cable to my monitor and low and behold it no longer sleeps and finishes the encode!!!

The temps stay the same with lid open or closed so it is not that . . . it definitely is sleeping due to the lid even though I have it set to never sleep.

It looks like the ATK hotkey drivers cause this. I had the latest version V1.0.0031 from the g750jw support page installed and I removed it. I tried encoding a video and it worked no problem with the lid closed. I discovered a newer version V1.0.0037 and installed that. Encoded a video and it went to sleep again. Uninstalled and it started working again.

This is why I keep suggesting everyone keep their laptop Windows drivers up to date, by downloading the latest from Asus support areas. The download support area for our laptops gets stale and isn't updated very long after product release. BIOS updates happen, but new versions of hardware drivers aren't. This has been the Asus way for a long long long time, and they way around it is to know how / where to look for new versions.

The G750JW/JX/JH/JM/JS/JZ download areas haven't had new updates for a while, at the time of this post the JM download area is where to get the latest Windows 8.1 updates, after the new G751 models are released then their download area will be the ones to watch. BIOS updates still happen in your model's support area, so still check there from time to time.

The G750/G751/551/500/etc share the same basic hardware components, so all those support areas for new hardware are good to check out.

Here is the list of places I look for updates for my G750JH; the best way to get a stable fully functioning G750/G751 is to update all the drivers / apps to the latest Windows 8.1 release.

The G750JW/JX/JH/JM/JS/JZ download areas haven't had new updates for a while, BIOS updates still happen in your model's support area, so check there from time to time.

The G750/G751/551/500/etc share the same basic hardware components; check support download areas for new hardware for newer drivers.

Asus maintains central support areas for hardware component features common to all products, those areas usually have the latest drivers after new hardware releases, sometimes there is a lag before the newer drivers show up there, so still to new product releases support downloads for the latest drivers.

Asus G751 Support / Download areas - Asus hasn't updated all the versions of these support areas, this link discusses the 3 locations were started independantly and not sync'd/updated through to the latest driver releases - check them all to be sure.

Great post hmscott, as usual :). I do hope if a mod see's your post, he/she can simply put or create a sticky out of it which we can update, so it helps alot of wanderers and users including myself, since each day or two you see a post whereby related to drivers, yet needed or people don't know where or how to get exactly the latest ones. For now, I will keep a link to signature straight pointing to this post, so at least users can see go through it, instead of searching looking helplessly.

Kelusion, I think Asus see's these lists posted, but I/they have never suggested to make it a sticky. It may be that the list goes out of currency too quickly, and people come and go, so over time it either won't be correct and/or it won't get updated. I would be happy to keep it updated as I have, but things change, and I would need to hand it off to someone else eventually.

sounds like you might have a virus. i mean, this is not a difficult task to complete by any means. that, or check your power supply. battery, cord, everything and make sure it works properly.

hmscott,

Thanks for all the time and effort you put into your posts. I have a question about the VGA drivers. When I go to the model specific update site for my G751JT, http://support.asus.com/download.aspx?SLanguage=en&p=3&s=719&m=G751JT&os=&hashedid=I3zsjpO34EbUTo7s, it says the newest Nvidia driver is the Version V9.18.13.4400 from 11-10-14. In the update section that just has VGA drivers (not model specific),http://support.asus.com/Download.aspx?SLanguage=en&m=VGA&p=3&s=111, the latest driver is Version V9.18.13.4477 from 01-30-15. Can I use the latest non-model specific driver?

Is it normal for Asus to update just the non-model specific site and not update the model specific site?

take care and thanks for all your help!

For people still having this problem.

Try updating now to the latest through this way: http://support.asus.com/download.aspx?SLanguage=en&p=3&m=ATK+Package&hashedid=n%2fa

Later version then on some of the laptops own driver page. Currently 1.0.0038 as of writing this post.

This has worked for me! Hope it helps someone else.

Otherwise try to uninstalling ATK Package to check if its really the problem.

I have exactly the same issue with my asus GL502VS (i7 7700hq+gtx1070, 120hz panel). I cannot stop the laptop from going into sleep when it is connected to an external monitor while playing overwatch. I don't have any issue while playing Train Simulator and browsing the web though.

Same laptop here, same issue

It only works when the lid is open, otherwise it goes to sleep after a few minutes of gaming even though it is set to "off" and "do nothing" everywhere.
I think the problem is the closing lid detection which only can be resolved by opening the laptop? Does someone know which cord must be disconnected?

Try Don't Sleep (http://www.softwareok.com/?seite=Microsoft/DontSleep/Screenshot-0).

also, non updated ATK package might be the reason... although for the G750 serie, the "newest" ATK might had been released like 6 years ago.

Thank you, I tried both (Don't Sleep and ATK package updated or uninstalled). It still goes to sleep mode after a while of gaming when the lid is closed.
I believe the best way to avoid this, is probably to disconnect something inside the laptop. I noticed that the laptop's screen + keyboard lights go off when I close the lid so there must be some kind of mechanism to tell the laptop if the lid is closed or open. I want to get rid of that and see if it helps. Any idea how to proceed?

You could try making the external monitor the primary monitor. If the laptop monitor is primary it thinks you are no longer using it when you close the lid.

Already primary. Laptop screen is completely black as long as the external monitor is connected.
Of course, the external monitor is still number "2" in the settings but I think that's normal. Primary on "2" is checked.

edit:
OK, I think I found something which made it better or completely solved the problem. I just finished a complete 15min gaming session in which the laptop usually went to sleep after 5min, so here are my results so far:

I deactivated Intel Turbo Boost: http://www.geeks3d.com/20170213/how-to-disable-intel-turbo-boost-technology-on-a-notebook/#_24

Also I switched back to power option "Balanced" instead of "High Performance" but the deactivated Turbo Boost might have been the culprit, we will see, I'll keep an eye on everything and will do more tests.

Hi

I just skimmed through and wanted to mention the Windows projection settings, as they can mess with this too.

I'll upload some pictures when I put my main OS disks back in, I don't have the full nVidia GFE installed on Server 2016, and there are a couple settings in there if I remember correctly

That's a pretty good find Nicolas, I really hope it works for you. Personally I don't have that option listed in my advanced power options. It may or may not be available, but as I mentioned in another thread W10 power options is horrible IMO and they deliberately hide a whole bunch of those options from you by default, and you have to mod the registry to enable them on some machines.

Any news to this issue ? I allso have that exact same problem with a factory new GL502VS....... I tryed disable turboboost, but that only allow for some minuttes longer play session before shutdown. Also i have lowered temps on cpu and GPU to around 80 degress celcius, it STILL shutdown - so i dont think its a temp issue.....
