Hi all,
I am currently hesitating on buying a G750JY or a G751JY but would like to be sure about the specs.

First of all, I saw on some websites that Graphical memory differs (and sometime even the video card) :
http://www.asus.com/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/G750JY/specifications/ ( GTX980M 8GB GDDR5 )
http://www.vandenborre.be/fr/pc-portable-tablette-pc-2-en-1/asus-g750jy-t4009h-be ( GTX880M 2Go)
http://www.kanucomputer.net/pc-portable/7509-asus-rog-g750jy-t4009h-be.html ( GTX980M 2GB GDDR5 )

Do you think it's a mistake? Or video cards can really be differents between G750JY models?

I also saw that the G750JY only support "802.11 b/g/n/ac". Does it mean that it does not support the 5ghz band ?
As the 2.4ghz is quite crowded nowadays, that could be a problem.

Thank you Ifrim
I hope the specs would be the same in Belgium.

Here, it's written 802.11 a/g/n .It probably means that 2.4 + 5 Ghz are supported, but why 802.11b and 802.11ac are now missing ?
It doesn't make me fully confident on what is really supported by the G750JY. Have you already tried connecting to an only 5ghz network?

krys, the /ac suggests it has 5ghz as that is part of the /ac specification. You pretty much get what you get with integral Wifi cards, and most need their drivers updated when you get them for best performance, and don't forget to update the Firmware directly from the vendor site as well.

802.11ac
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_802.11#802.11ac

That error listing looks like incomprehensible gibberish, so I would ignore that site - why buy from them if they can't get their product info correct?

The G750JY specification makes it look like there are only differences in SSD/HDD included, everything else shows only 1 available specification, there is only the 8GB VRAM listed.

G750JY Specifications
http://www.asus.com/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/G750JY/specifications/

Although 8GB of VRAM sounds great, it is likely you will never use it.

What you will be forced to use everyday, is Intel/Nvidia Optimus. The G750JY has Optimus, which decides for you which GPU to run the rendering of your graphics, and can and will force you to use the Intel GPU for rendering even though you have that great Nvidia 980m 8GB VRAM sitting there idle. Windows and IE, and a number of Microsoft applications will only recognize the Intel GPU and you can't change them to use the Nvidia GPU.

The other waste of resources is that your expensive 980m is now sitting behind the Intel GPU for all video output. Your Nvidia GPU isn't directly connected to the internal or external displays, so you are forced to rely on the Intel GPU control panel for all video settings - and limitations.

This kills G-Sync, and many of the Nvidia features - they can't work through the Intel GPU video outputs.

The Intel CPU will heat up with the 100% of the time video going through the integrated iGPU, so your CPU load temps will be 10c higher than the same CPU not loaded down with Intel iGPU video processing - it's even worse when your rendering application is forced to do the CPU and GPU rendering through the same Intel CPU/GPU - it gets hot and Thermally Throttles.

If you run into Thermal Throttling due to Optimus, you can use this technique to downclock the CPU to reduce the heat enough to drop it below the Thermal Throttling point, and maintain performance throughout the entire rendering:

Things to try ~CPU overheating JM/JS/JZ models~
https://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?48594-Things-to-try-CPU-overheating-JM-JS-JZ-models&highlight=dblkk

I don't think the extra VRAM is worth putting up with Optimus :)

The G751JY is a good 4GB 980m laptop, and the only current global problem is the Realtek sound driver isn't working for that model, and the sound is a bit messed up - but headphones, external speakers, output to a receiver / home theater would also work. There are work arounds for the audio listed here that can get you through till Asus finds and releases a fix.

Ignoring that audio mess, on the whole the G751JY without Optimus is a better performance choice over the G750JY.

Please come back and let us know what you end up getting, and how you like it :)

Thank you very much hmscott for this very very complete answer.

In fact, I am not directyl the one that will order the laptop. It's in my salary package. So it will be ordered by the Human Ressources officer. Normally they only give a Macbook Pro but they allow me to choose something else from their provider (which does not give many details on their products) as long as it doesn't go above 2000€ and there is 3 years Warranty.

You quite convinced me to go for the G751JY as the 980m 8 Go GDDR5 from the G750JY may be limited by Optimus.

I hope the 4 Go GDDR5 on the G571JY won't be a limitation but I read somewhere in another thread that it may only be a problem for some games that does not compress their texture.

Finally, their provider sent an offer for a G751JY-T7140H-BE.

Strangely, this one has the GTX 980M with 3G GDDR5. I hope, this is a mistake, but all the G751JY-T7140H-BE I found on internet have this configuration :

I just received my new Laptop, a G751JY-T7140H-BE .
So here are the answers :

- Contrary to what stated by some vendors, The GTX980M has 4GB GDDR5
- the Wifi card is the intel dual band wireless-ac 7260, it supports both 2,4Ghz and 5Ghz

and I clearly not recommend for any Enterprise buying at MediaMarkt because of their very very poor business commercial service (expensive prices and absolutely no follow up)

The topic is about the G750JY which has 8gb of GDDR5 :)
The G751 topics are in the other forums :)
