Hello everybody,

I finally had time to finish my small "project" on the decal for my laptop. I had some trouble with the dimensions but I finally managed to do it.
Some of you might say that I ruined the laptop etc. but frankly I think it looks way better.
The original matte black finish wasn't very fingerprint-friendly. Every time I open or close the laptop, there are fingerprint spots all over. This was driving me crazy. Of course this could be made with any type of vinyl, also a print out with someones favorite picture/pattern.
I found this vinyl on Ebay, and it is originally a car wrap, but I was looking for black brushed aluminum-ish kind of thing. Its not 100% like the real thing, but I think it looks damn good.

I did the project in Illustrator, "armed" with a ruler and 3 hrs of free time.
The cutting out was made with a vinyl plotter cutter and it was more than perfect.
The applying itself was way harder than I thought, because there are so many things you have to keep in mind.

The only thing I didn't finish is the display bezel, but I will leave that for later because there are so many things that need to be cut out.

I'd love to hear your opinions.

I'm glad you like it! :)

There really isn't much to mess up. The only thing you can "destroy" is the vinyl. I got a 150 x 50 cm for 15 Euro incl. delivery. I still have one big piece left for the display bezel, but I haven't finished the project yet.

Hmm, I don't even see the difference from the original thing :)). I see that the rog logo is gone and that there are some stripes over there but I can't seem to find many differences :P. I do believe that the finish is much nicer and fingerprint friendly. But how did you manage to get the exact same pattern ? with the keyboard holes and all ?

PS: Very well done mate ! This black rubber finish is killing me also. I loved the metal finish on the G750 and G75VW from the keyboard...

I don't have the patience for something like this but I sure wish I wasn't always cleaning fingerprints off of my G751. My hat's off to you for having the patience and actually being able to get the cut outs so precise!

Every measurement was taken with a ruler. It took over 3 hrs of measuring and writing down the data. After that it was a matter of another 4-5 hrs in Illustrator to actually create the vectors.
As a matter of fact, I made 2 prints on paper with fine black lines, after that I had to cut out the holes for the keyboard and other paper with scissors and do some adjustments where needed. :D

This is how the vinyl looks up close. It feels very nice to the touch. I'm currently looking for another type of vinyl that would look cool. Any suggestions? (no "carbon" vinyl, please)

*Edit*

If there's one thing I hate, it's the fact the now my Nvidia and Intel stickers are coming off, because they can't stick very well to the vinyl surface. It's not a biggie, but it's frustrating. :/

Haha really, the first thing I do when I get a new laptop is shave it. I hate all the stickers they put everywhere.

Really like the textured look. Does it eliminate the fingerprint magnet effect? That is my only major complaint with this laptop, it seems the G750 had a much more resistant texture.

If the ground work is already done with the plot file etc. You may want to consider a little sideline selling the skins.

+1 for what Joshindaphils said. To be honest, I would pay a couple of bucks to get the pattern instead of making all the work that you had to put to make it like this. Just think about it ;) !

What pattern?

Here are some close-ups, but it's a bit dark now and the flash on my camera is making everything shine... :D

Interesting that you went to so much trouble to skin your laptop and you're concerned about your Nvidia and Intel stickers coming off. The first thing I did with mine was pull the advertising off of it.

I have three suggestions...

1.) Can you send /sell me the plotter file? I have a guy that could print a few for us...

2.) Can you make these skins for us? I would luv to have one...

3.) If you can make them for us, would there be color or a variety of choices for us to choose from?

Seriously! I do not like all the smudges that happen on ours... Looks untidy...

Let us know, PLEASE!!!!!

Dude, I'm not really sure what to do with that right now.
I can sell the finished sticker on the European market but I don't really want to give it away just like that. I took a long time and it was hard to make.
There is a saying "if you're good at something, never do it for free".
I have some friends in the US, I'll contact them and I will tell you as soon as I have some clarity on that.
Skins like this go for $35-40 a piece for the G75.
I have to think a little bit about that.
I believe that at the moment I'm the first one to actually make a skin for this model.
As for the customization....everything is possible. There are no limitations on the vinyl. It can be a print with someone favorite character/game/movie etc.

So, to sum it up - I have to get back to you on that. :) I hope you understand what I mean.

If you're concerned about the stickers pulling up, you might try masking everything (leaving precise holes for the stickers) and giving it a really quick shot with a sand blaster just to rough up the material. This would have to be done BEFORE the sticker application though, sorry!

I'd also be interested in a US kit if you get something going :)

If someone is REALLY brave....I wonder if one of those liquid headlight restore kits would work? I assume it would make the surface REALLY shiny upon application, which I don't think anyone would like....but the liquid is supposed to have a sealer in it, I'd think it would be very durable afterwards.

Haha don't try that unless you're really, REALLY brave!!! It might ruin the finish, and would not be reversible.

*edit* for speelling

Okay. So I decided to follow in your footsteps. I've only done the top cover with carbon fiber vinyl. I don't think I'll have enough patience to do the keyboard. Thanks for sharing your experience with the community.46931

I've just completed my keyboard without having to do any measurements. The only requirement is having fairly thick vinyl, and you'll be able to cut around the keys after application.
These are my results:

To be honest, I was thinking of trying with "carbon" vinyl at first, but from what I'm seeing, I'm kinda glad I didn't.
I don't think that this is the best looking vinyl.
And don't get me wrong, I don't want to sound like an *******, but I find my way much better. I noticed a lot of wrinkles on the corners, and that is quite unpleasant to look at. And in general, the way that you have covered the middle metal part on the back is not to my taste. I like the design the way it is and I didn't want to alter it in any other way.
But congrats for the effort. I know it ain't easy. :) And once more, don't get me wrong, I just don't like the carbon vinyl and the way you covered everything on the back. Other that that, it looks good.

As for the keyboard, I don't think that it could be done without a pre-cut vinyl. If you try to cut away the excess with it being already applied on the laptop, you will scratch/damage most of the surfaces.

I have just finished the "fine tuning" for the project. It's now a very tight fit on everything. I also "detached" the "M" buttons and now they are separated from the keyboard. I decided to leave it without the display bezel. Do you guys think that I should add it as well?

And no, there is no way that it will unstick. The vinyl sticks very well.

There is a big gap between the main keyboard and the extra buttons and it was driving me crazy. This is how I decided to do it. :)

Hi guys,

I just want to make a little update about the availability of this skin in the US.
I have contacted everybody I know there and nobody has time or doesn't bother doing it.
I have checked the pricing for shipping from Germany, and its about €16. That brings us up to a total of about $55-58 incl shipping. Unfortunately this is the best price I can offer, and it's quite literally a break even point for me. So I won't be doing this as a business, rather than making people happy and help them get rid of those nasty fingerprints.

It is also worth mentioning that this is the price for vinyls like carbon, brushed aluminium etc., which only need cutting. For printed vinyl with your favorite picture/pattern it would be like $70-$75 incl. shipping. It's a quite expensive service here in Germany.

I'm open for suggestions...

Edit * The price for Germany will be €40 incl. shipping and for the rest of Europe it would be around €45 incl. shipping.

Ok guys, I have it for sale on Ebay now.

I've managed to lower the price a bit by choosing another company to cut the vinyl.

I hope you will like it.
If you have interest in buying this set, you can do it directly from Ebay.

I have 10 sets currently available.

If you have questions regarding the application, I am always available.

Hey guys,
I just want to inform you that I made some small adjustments on the shipping prices for the US and EU. I didn't calculate correctly, for which I apologize.
The shipping for the US is now 10 euro, not 16. So the total price now is 45 Euro incl. shipping. That's about $48.
For the EU the shipping is only about 2-3 euro. With a total of 37-38 Euro incl. shipping.
The delivery takes about 10-12 days for the US and between 2-5 days for the EU.

I hope that you don't think the price is too high, but that's the best I can offer. If I sell one set at lower price I'll be on a loss!

Regards :)

Danke Dongleboo ! I think the prices are just ok for both EU and US. 40Euros for a new look for your notebook + a fingerprint proof one are totally worth it.
I'm quite low on the $$ now, but if you will keep them longer for sale I will buy one around summer.

All the best !

Edit: By the way, you should write some recommendations on how to apply the decals on the laptop so people won't mess up their vinyls.

By the way, you should write some recommendations on how to apply the decals on the laptop so people won't mess up their vinyls.

I was thinking of making a video guide, but I don't have a tripod for my camera and someone had to film me while I stick it on.
But as I wrote in the description on ebay, it would be much easier and safer to be put on by 2 people.
This being said, if my gf was filming me, she wouldn't be able to help me! :D

The help from the second person is needed mainly in the beginning, when you have to align the corners and the bottom straight line. After that its just a matter of patience. You don't need to rush. Also you should NOT remove the whole backing paper at once! It should be done at stages. In every set I include some small pieces of backing paper, which will help you stick it on safely.

It is worth mentioning that the cutouts around the arrow keys are very sensitive, as they are only 2 mm wide. So they have to be pealed off the backing paper very carefully!

I have explained how and from where to start applying the vinyl in ebay. I also explained what not to do. Needless to say, the front is much harder than the back, but I believe that's pretty obvious, given the details.

I'll try to make a video next week so I can show you the entire process. It takes about 10-15 minutes

Regards

Hi Guys,

I have finally made a how-to video but you would have to excuse me for the dark video, but I didn't have enough light. Also I have a VERY ****ty tripod which is made for phones and it couldn't hold my DSLR quite right :D.

So there you go, I hope its informative enough, if you have more questions don't hesitate to ask. :)

Thanks for the video, and thanks for agreeing to mail the decals to Singapore! Video was certainly helpful for the application of the decal.

For me, it wasn't as tricky as I thought it would be (after watching the video), though you really need 2 persons to apply the decal. The cutting was perfect, though from the photos you can see that I could probably improve a little in the application as the outside decal was a little off-centre. On the insides, the thinner strips can be tricky, but you just need to be patient.

Besides the perfect sizing and cutting, decals were of great quality and choice, and the materials really blend in with the existing laptop aesthetics. It certainly improved the usability of my ROG G751JY. Previously, I had to be really cautious using the laptop, and being somewhat anal about finger and sweat stains, the laptop's rubberised coating really left a lot to be desired.

Bottom line - If you want to get more mileage and peace of mind using this gaming beast, and certainly retain some resale value 2 or 3 years down the road, I encourage any G751 owner to get this.

Hello everybody,

I just want to make a little update on this thread.
First of all, there is only 1 set left from the "brushed aluminum" series, I don't know if I will make more before the beginning of September

In the meantime I spend some more time on this project and I have developed a full skin cover for the laptop - full back panel (including the metal part), screen bezel and palm rest.

I have a big order for printed skins (with a printed image) and I will get some discount from the print house so this is a one-time limited offer for a lower price than the regular. This is only possible because I'll be making large order and they've made a discount. This will not be a valid offer after two weeks or so.

The images I will upload are just to give you and example!!!
I am not the owner of these images, nor I have the right to sell them without the permission of the rightful owners. Some of them are fan artwork and some belong to Blizzard. I just wan't to give you a better idea of how it will look and I didn't spend a lot of time of choosing the best picture.

If you are interested in this offer, contact me here via PM! You have to provide the images you want to have on the skin. I cannot develop or make images or collages as I have no free time to deal with this.

The images are solely for example purpose!!!
