dryroon, yes you would need a modified BIOS/vbios, and as you say the form factor is different and unlikely to work, and even if you can get it to work after many hours, you would have wasted so much time it would be cheaper to sell the laptop and get something new.

The G750/G751 aren't designed to be upgradeable.

I second on hmscott's opinion.

Hi, everyone, I donīt mean to hijack the thread but I have a question regarding upgrading the GPU on my G750JX, do you think the situation is different for this model?, I think it is because the G750JX doesīt use optimus. After doing some research I found a spare card from a G750JH (780M) really cheap, so I though maybe this can work. I check every single GPU on the G750 series (except the G750JY, I canīt find any tear down for it) and all have exactly the same form so fiscally it must fit, but I know that the 780M will need more rom for the heatsink and also more power.

In order to do this mod I will need:
Change the bottom case to the fat vent one
change the heatsink and fan
and change the AC power supply to one with 230W

After all this mods do you think this should work?

I know I can sell this laptop and get a new one but, Iīm on the Mackintosh scene and Iīm worry about get all to work in OS X again (I spent the last year getting all working) this is why Iīm concern about changing the laptop, instead and upgrade sound really good.

I hope you donīt mind I post this question here, I think is related.

Thanks!!!

Areosjc, the G750JH is physically larger to allow for much larger heatsinks, fans, and a beefier heatpipe/exchanger to the exhaust ports. Swapping the bottom shell and replacing parts with G750JH/JZ components isn't going to be clean.

"The G750JH is more than just a G750 with a new GTX 780M swapped inside; the ROG engineers had to make significant customizations in the chassis, cooling and even down to the core graphics PCB itself!"

Here is a thread with a lot of internals photo's of the G751JY:

There are better ways to care for your JX than hacking it up in a FrankenVidia Mashup ;)

If you like the idea of the Mashup, maybe buy a few dead G750JH's off ebay and mashup the good parts into 1 good working JH?

There are nice new Macs out now that are affordable and should satisfy your need for MacOS, or get last years model for less. Apple needs the money, please keep sending it to them ;)

Get a nice 980m, and dedicate it for Windows/Gaming, it should be good for quite a while.

The G750JX OC'd is plenty fast still, you could probably get another year or more out of it, upgrade fever is hard to resist, but there may be better ways to spend $ and time if you already have a JX.

Please come back and let us know what you work out :)

First, thanks for respond, and I understand your statement, actually I think all the G750 series laptops use the same form factor motherboard, I even find some post about a G750JH using the JW motherboard, my G750JX use the same JW motherboard ( they all use different BIOS), so I think that probes that all of them have the same form factor, I know there most be a difference in cooling for the JH/JZ/JY model because the 780M is rated at 100W the 880M is rated at 122W and finally the 980M is rated at 100W or a little more. This is why the Asus engineers had to mod the case (just the bottom case actually), in order to provide more air in and out, the fans in the JH/JZ/JY must be twice as fat than the ones found in the JX/JM/JW but use the same form factor. This engineers put a third heat pipe in the VGA heatsink (JX use only two), and the modification they announce are because they added 2 more mosfetīs to the 780M PCB for accomplish the power requirements. I post some pics from all the GPUs found in the G750 series except the 980M wich I still canīt find (you post about G751JY pics not G750JY pics). And also two more pics comparing the back of the JZ model to the JX model you will notice they are the same except that extra air vent in the bottom case, I had another pics that probes actually the screws on it are just the same. Check this http://www.asusparts.eu/es/Asus-90NB00M1-R31UI0, http://www.asusparts.eu/es/Asus-13NB00M1AP0501 the keyboard and the hinge cover are the same for all the models (the keyboard as you may know is the top part of the laptop, so the bottom case are just the difference to mod in order to fit the 780M with the heatsink and fan.
