View Full Version : Asus G771JM and Skype not working together? - Audio issues

Basically I'm having some serious problems with Skype (desktop version) where it will just knock out the audio on my laptop completely when using headphones. It only happens when I'm on Skype, everything else works perfectly.

Someone can send me a message there, I see it, I write back and then suddenly all audio is gone from my laptop. No sound anywhere. If I plug out my headphones, the audio is normal and no problems whatsoever. If I put the headphones in again there's no sound yet again. The only solution is to turn the computer off and on again (yes, restarts doesn't really help - it must be turned off and on again manually) and the audio will be fine again (with and without headphones). If I log onto Skype it works for a bit before it knocks out my audio completely again.

Also, this is a brand new laptop, I bought the exact same laptop last month, but I returned it because of the exact same problem thinking it was something wrong with my laptop. I bought a new one and guess what - same problem. Different serial numbers and all, but still same problem with Skype.

It's so weird, because everything else works. I can watch youtube, Netflix, play games without any problems, but when on Skype the problem occurs where it knocks out the audio from my headphones. I've tried multiple headphones, but still the same problem. I've tried using my main headset on my old computer and there's no problem there either.

Having anyone experienced something similar and knows a fix for it?
I did post the same thing on the Skype forums, but no help so far. Figured I'd ask here too.
Here's the link to my post on the Skype forums if you want to take a look: http://community.skype.com/t5/Windows-desktop-client/Skype-mutes-everything-when-using-headphones/td-p/3952293

Haven't used Skype for a long time, but it has always been a buggy mess :)

Are there audio settings options or individual volume/mute settings visible in Skype or Windows when Skype does it's headphone muting thing? Try unmuting.

Probably has yeah, but I haven never really had any real issues with it. I only use it for gaming though.

There isn't a visible mute setting when it happens. I have tried to mute and unmute after it has happended just to see if the audio would work again, but it hasn't. It's weird since the audio works again if I unplug the headset. The moment I put it in again it has no sound still, and I have to restart the laptop for the audio to play through my headset again. Exact same problem with the other laptop I had of the same type before I returned it.

So while struggling with this issue I tried uninstalling Realtek HD Audio Manager, and sure enough, the problem seem to have been fixed. My audio, while using headphones, works just fine on Skype now. It seems Realtek HD Audio Manager and Skype does not work well together. It must be a bug which they should fix as fast as possible.

ZeSpecter, you could post in the Skype forums and get support there. Here is a similar problem from long ago. I love how the first answer from Skype support was to uninstall the BETA and install the release version, unless they are running the release version and then they should uninstall the release version and install the BETA version :)

Skype on Windows 7 stops sound from working

I was going to suggest checking the Windows Sound Control Panel and see if there was another device to select, after installing Skype with Realtek HD Audio Manager installed. But here is a related post suggesting doing the setting in Skype to select the correct audio:

I will leave it up to you to find a closer post to your exact problem - or post you own. Let us know when you find the fix.

Like I said, buggy mess, long time, apparently still happening :)

Thanks, but I'm pretty sure I have fixed it now. Had to uninstall my current Realtek HD Audio Manager and install it from http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/ instead and the problem seem to have been fixed. The default Realtek HD Audio Manager that is already on the laptop when you buy it, does not work properly with Skype apparently.
