Hi there!

I have a G53S ROG Lap top and would like to upgrade the RAM to the full 16gb and change the HD to a SSD.

Can anyone please recommend what RAM and SSD I should get to do this?

Also I am not trying to spend a lot as I am trying to squeeze a bit more life out of this laptop before upgrading to a better lap top in the future.

Thanks!

Hwinfor64 will show you what your ram timing's are, you'll need to match that exactly
SSD will be the most noticeable upgrade you can do. I would stick with Intel or Samsung pay the little bit extra an evo 3 year warranty would be good for you as you don't plan to keep your notebook much longer. Then again a pro would move with you 10 year guarantee

Cool thanks!

Is there any way to be sure that I get the correct parts?

yes you'll need to match the Ram Timings same speeds etc Hwinfo64 will show you exactly what you already have and you need to match that. Most likely you won't be able to get the same brand name but as long a you match the specs it will work.
hwinfo64 will also tell you what hard drive connections you have also. I'm pretty sure you will have at least 1 SATA port if that is true the you will want to get a 2.5" SATA SSD.
I would be more helpful but I'm not familiar with the G53 I just looked up your specs and no help there storage is blank. Hwinfor64 will show you everything about you hardware including what version of the BIOS you have.

The G53jw, G53sw, and G53sx all have 2 hdd bays. You'll be able to upgrade to an ssd for your os, and keep your original hdd for storage.

Looking at an old pic of one of my G53SX's the ram it used was Hynix 4GB DDR3 PC3-10600 HMT351S6CFR8C-H9

Link to it on ebay

If you're looking to upgrade to 16gb first verify you have 4 ram slots on your motherboard. You'll have 2 under the keyboard, and 2 on the bottom.

You can also look in hwinfo64 as Clint suggested, download it here.

Choose portable so you don't have to install it.

Extract the folder, then run it.

Click on the + next to memory and you'll see the current information for the memory that's installed.

Here's a screenshot as an example

As for the ssd's look on newegg, they've been running specials.

I tend to stick with Corsair ssd's, I've had both the force 3 gt series and the neutron gtx series. I also tried the muskin chronos ssd, and a kingston ssd, though the fastest has been the neutron series.

You can browse ssd's here

Also since the G53's are getting old, you should probably look into cleaning the heatsinks and maybe replacing the thermal compound. I can give you instructions if you want them.

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks very much buddy!

I have built my own rigs before but this is the first time I am messing around with a lap top so I don't want to wreck it.

This lap top has been good to me so I want to squeeze just a bit more life out of it before I replace it entirely.

I am hoping this will all be cheap enough to justify the upgrade - if not I will just put cash towards a new machine.

I work away from home a lot so a lap top at this point and time is the way to go for my gaming as I just plug into a tv with a HDMI.

If you could send me all the instructions you have that would be fantastic!

Thank you!

Also just wondering - and forgive the FNG question but should I get 2X 8GB DDR3 RAM or get x4 4GB RAM?

I am maxed out at 16gb correct?

Thanks!

What's the exact model of your laptop? Also how much ram do you currently have?

The G53jw and G53sw only support 16gb of ram. Though the G53sx and G74sx support 32gb of ram (8gb x 4). Of course you can't be running anything less than windows 7 pro, windows 7 home premium 64-bit only supports 16gb of ram.

EDIT:

Here's a good disassembly video, just watch it once to familiarize yourself.

Here's a good video that shows you how to take off the heatsinks and clean the processor die. You also want to do the same thing with the heatsink. They also use a special cleaner to clean the die with, you can use cotton swabs and concentrated isopropyl (at least 90%).

https://youtu.be/bWF2c85CmpU?t=843

I tend to use a dry cotton swab to get most of the hard thermal compound off the surfaces. Use a cotton swab saturated in isopropyl to clean up the rest. Also watch out for those thermal pads, if they get dirty you can try to gently clean them with isopropyl, but if you are too aggressive with it you will destroy them. You can always buy new thermal pads if you need them.

The ROG laptop community usually uses IC Diamond thermal compound. If you have some other brand laying around you don't necessarily have to use ICD, it just seems to work the best. Though no matter what thermal compound you use, you do not want to spread it.

Use the compression method

Also remember to clean the heatsinks and fans, a lot of dirt and debris can get trapped and you won't know until you disassemble. Use an old toothbrush to get between the fins.

That should about cover everything.
