It should be simple. It really should I just need a new optical drive for my G750JW.

First, I thought, hey, easy, I should be able to find the specs of that drive somewhere in my documentation, or on the Asus website. Nope.

Since I realized long ago that the only difference between me and the so called "geek squad" is that I'm actually honest about the fact I don't have a clue in hell, I thought, "hey, I'll just call the manufacturer. Surely they'll be able to give me something as simple as a friggin DIMENSION OR PART NUMBER I need to order a replacement optical drive, since the one they put in the darn thing stopped working all together". Yeah, I know, I was really optimistic on that one. I'm silly like that.

But no such luck. So here I am, I need a new DVD writer for my G750JW, but I have no clue about what I'm supposed to buy. The more I research, the more confusing it gets. Slimm? 9mm? 12mm? Do I need SATA or ultra/micro SATA? Cables? ... but I thought SATA drives didn't need cables? What's a good brand? How do I know if what I'm buying needs brackets? And how exactly do I mount a darn bracket? I have not the first clue of what I'm doing. If it's simply take the screw off, slide the old one out, slide the new one in, I can manage. But If I need to start changing fronts and brackets, I'm a goner.

So please, oh mighty tech people, hear my plea, and just tell me what the f00k I'm supposed to buy. Pretty please with cherry on top. /batting eyelashes and all that.

Thanks.

the original ones sold by asus dnt come cheap and even with those you need to change over the front from the old to the new optical drive.

but here you can find it: http://www.asusparts.eu/en/partfinder/Asus/Notebook/G%20Series/G750JW#ODD

optical drive is ODD

the front is actually really easy to get off if your optical drive will still click open, then do that and then remove it from the notebook by taking the bottom plate off and unscrew the little chrome screw holding the drive in place. with the dvd drive open you see where its clicked to the drive itself so you can gently get it off and place it on the new one and put it back in

The drive used in my g750jz is on like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Panasonic-UJ160-Blu-ray-Player-BD-ROM-Drive-for-ASUS-G74-G75-G75V-G75VW-/271557244477

thats a bluray player/dvd burner drive not sure wich is in yours but at least now you now the thickness is 12.7mm,

hope this helps a bit.

good luck

Atheen, there are lots of potential upgrades available in the 12.7mm tray and slot loading form factor DVD, Blu-ray readers, and Blu-ray writers, check Amazon for a start:

12.7mm Blu-ray
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_nr_p_n_feature_keywords_2?fst=as%3Aoff&rh=n%3A172282%2Cn%3A541966%2Cn%3A193870011%2Cn%3A1 292107011%2Cn%3A668573011%2Ck%3A12.7mm+blu+ray%2Cp _n_feature_keywords_two_browse-bin%3A5995689011&keywords=12.7mm+blu+ray&ie=UTF8&qid=1429869281&rnid=5995685011

You only need to remove the retaining screw found under the bottom access panel, and pull out the old drive, transfer the bracket on the old drive to the new drive, and push in the new drive.

I don't bother moving the fitted cover from the old drive to the new drive, especially since it often says DVD instead of Blu-ray. It looks rough to some people, but it doesn't bother me :)

It's easy to break the tabs holding the cover onto the drives, and you need to carefully remove it from the old drive and carefully snap it onto the new drive, not worth the potential damage just to get a smooth exterior - I don't notice it for long after fitting it in.

I have used Panasonic and LG drives, they all work great.

When you find one you like, please let us know how it works out :)

Thank you both for your help. It is frustrating at times, when you actually do try to do things right, and the information you need keeps evading you. I'm going to be looking at some LG drives on amazon. That's what most people use from what I gather, so drivers shouldn't be too hard to come by

These two looked promising to me. What do you guys think?

Atheen, those look good, but don't know anything about the *10* series, off the top of my head I was going to suggest the BT30N, and found another newer one too - less featured / cheaper, but a contender :)

Blu-ray Burners and Drives

LG BT30N
http://www.lg.com/us/data-storage/lg-BT30N

LG BU20N
http://www.lg.com/us/data-storage/lg-BU20N

The BT10F seems to have some compatibility issues, checking google, it is pretty old too 2012...:
https://www.google.com/search?q=lg+bt10f&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8

There is also a BT10N... like I said, lots of models - definitely do final round checks for the specific model you narrow down to before ordering.

There are other models from LG on Amazon / Newegg / etc as well, I guess hunkering down and comparing features and speeds is best... there isn't that much price difference, so spending $20 more for the newest /" bestest" is worth it.

Let us know what you end up getting and how you like it :)

Hum, tried to post a reply, it said it has to be reviewed first? What's this about?

Anyway, i'll try to condensate it here. If it ends up posting, sorry for the doublepost. I'll delete it if I see it.

I'm going to go with the LG BT30N. NE is out of stock, so either BH here http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1098338-REG/lg_bt30n_lg_slim_sata_blu_ray.html

or Amazon here
http://www.amazon.com/LG-Electronics-Super-Multi-Notebooks-BT30N/dp/B00AWQWE7Y/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1429980339&sr=1-2&keywords=BT30N
or here http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BKEC65M/ref=ask_ql_qh_dp_hza

Not sure what the difference is between the two Amazon's, one says its a BT30N and one a BT30N 3.0S. Tried to look it up on the LG website, couldn't find what the difference was.

What do you guys think?

Atheen, they both look like the same drive, the cheaper one comes "without software", whatever that software is it isn't very expensive, the price difference is small. Usually the bundled Cyberlink software is several years behind, and isn't worth it unless you can't immediately afford the $40-100 (sale vs full price) for the latest version.

Cyberlink increments their versions every year, 2014 was Version 14, and for 2015 it is/will be Version 15.

I am using Leawo Bluray Free as well now. It's Free :)

There are no firmware updates, I thought the 3.0 might be Firmware version, it might be SATA 3.0, or USB 3.0 :)

Email the seller, or ask the question in the posting if you need to know.

Also, it occurs to me that this drive release is over a year plus old now, I wonder if an upgraded version is on the way, you might want to poke around. The BT20N has been discontinued, FYI.

Ordered this one, I should get it on Tuesday. Hopefully, I won't get too many problems replacing the old unit. I hope I won't have to change the face plate. I'll update on how it goes, either way.

Great Success ! (Sounds better with Borat accent)

Received my new DVD drive last night, thanks to the instructions you guys gave me it was a total breeze to unscrew it, transfer the bracket and slide it back in. Took me 10 minutes tops, and half of that was to put those tiny screws back in through the bracket. I did not change the face plate and it fits seamlessly on the laptop.

The new DVD drive was recognized instantly, and my laptop now detects and burns DVDs successfully once again. A little slow to detect and load DVDs, but it works. It's also a lot quieter than what I had expected from some of the reviews, which was a nice surprise.

Now, off to get myself a good DVD authoring software. I am thinking DVD Creator, maybe?

Thank you, thank you thank you all for your help!!! :D :D :D
