View Full Version : GTX960M +135Mhz OC - any way to go further?

I see GTX960M is just rebranding of GTX860M with small factory OC. It is shame, that standard GT860M can run faster with OC than "new" 960M. OC is limited to +135Mhz.
Is there any way to go further? Or I'm stuck with my new G551JW...

Um no, you can't. I mean you could but you shouldn't.

I feel no stress.

Will you be feeling stress when your GPU deep fries itself?

No risk no fun. But I have repasted it with Arctic Silver 5 and temperatures are 10C lower as before.

I think the 960M was never intended to be OC'd like the 970M and 980M are so you're walking on very thin ice but right, no risk, no fun, at all, ever.

YEp. I think I've chosen wrongly. I haven't noticed what a huge difference between GTX960 and GTX970-80 is. But I was afraid of buying 17 inch notebook, so I bought 15'. Now I see performance problems and GPU card cannot be upgraded in Asus - it is non standard MXM card inside (found while repasting).
Lucky ya, you own GTX980M, real cheetah

I am very happy I did get the 980M, this thing is an INSANE MOBILE GPU. If you wouldn't have OC'd yours you could have returned it...

Asus has the 960m limited to only to reach 74C. It'll only throttle when it reaches it, mine dropped down to 980MHz when playing the witcher 3 and it wasn't even overclocked.

OCing TO +135Mhz does not invalidate the warranty. ASUS includes the GPU tweak software on some models of the G751. If you do vBIOS tweaks to go further, that probably does, if you were to leave it that way when sending it in for repair at least... otherwise they probably wouldn't know anyway.

You should use the modified fan profiles that are discussed in other posts here. The defaults do not ramp up the fans enough, quickly enough, to avoid heat throttling.

I was talking about the GPU not the fan (or maybe I'm not understanding), I don't think the GL551JW have control over the fan. I read that it's bad to let you GPU temp go above 82C, I prefer to have the temp cap off at 79C just like on the GL551JM model, but Asus set the threshold for the GL551JW temp much lower than it's old model.

The problem is, that GPU-Z cannot save vbios so I cannot edit it. It says that card does not support that.

+135MHz max is default for all laptop chips.

Same with my GTX860M in 551JM, afterburner gives +135MHz as max.

Not that it matters much, at +135MHz it is close to thermal throttling (GPU thermal throttling seems to be set to 82-83C for 551JM) during long periods of gaming anyway.

Is there any solution to increase the threshold of the gpu's temp in gl551jw?

Yep, GTX970M is almost twice as powerful, huge difference.

dont lie OCfreak, the scores on firestrike are:
gtx 960m 4000
gtx 965m 5000
gtx 970m 6500
gtx 980m 8500

so its not duble, its just 60% better gtx 970m

He meant GPU score obviously, no point comparing overall score, but still gtx 960m - 4200, gtx 970m - 7400.

Thats around +76% performance.

boxis u are comparing gtx 960m stock score with gtx 970m oc scores,an thats not correct...the diference is only 50-60%

yes,its the best price to buy gtx 970m and i sya go for it

i got gtx 980 and scores 10k OC and thats 35% more performance than OC gtx 970m

Check Firestrike Graphics average score at Notebookcheck, its 7428 vs 4245 thats +76%.

I am comparing stock to stock, no point comparing OCed versions (like 980M is doing 11500 GPU score OCed).

Both cards are very good in their category.

the gtx 970m stock makes only 6500 so ckeck again,i tested in december when it came to market, don't argue with me because u will lose

i tested in front of me so i dont care of internet scores,i have gtx 970m(for a month in dec) and gtx 980m now.

give me a prinscreen with stock frecv on 7500 scor and i will eat my words, till then...

L.E: this is the score "
min: 6386 avg: 6530.9 (48%) median: 6531 (48%) max: 6667 Points"

READ BETTER NEXT TIME(the second test is the firestrike with full details, not first, offff)

You simply dont understand that we are writing GPU score itself like I wrote in my first respond, please read.
Why would you care about GPU+CPU overall score when comparing GPUs, people with different CPU will get different numbers, but GPU score will remain same pretty much and thats the one around 7450.

I've had an Asus G751JT myself, which scored 7560 in 3dmark fire strike (GPU score) at stock clocks with newest driver available mid may. it's not double GTX960M, I admit that, but still 75-80% more, quite notable difference.

All cards can gain some from overclocking, but I'm not comparing overclocked cards.

Even my GTX860M can score over 4500 GPU score in 3dmark when overclocked (http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/7189335 )

i always took the combined score for the sistems because i buy the sistem not only the video board and i need to know what they can provide combined

its true that the graphic score only for the gtx 970m is 7500-7700 and for the gtx 980m is 11500-11700
