Hello guys,
I was about to purchase a G74SX A1 from B&H Online store as it is a reliable store & had a very good price compared to others.But today when I checked the site it said that this product has been discontinued by the manuf.Not only the A1 but several other models.
When I contacted their reps. they too said that the production is stopped.
Is this true guys?

Most likely they have only stopped the production of the old configurations with the i7 2630qm processor. Other than that the new stock configurations are basically the same.

I knew it, that's why they got suddenly worse. They dug into the reject bins to fill the last orders.

The DH71 model is exactly the same configuration with a slightly faster processor. Amazon usually has the A1 in stock, alongside the DH71. (Sorry for my ignorance, but do you guys have Amazon there?)

@BrodyBOY
I am going to tell a relative of mine who stays in NY..
There is a A1 available on J&R site for 1479$.Should I get it?becoz all the other sites have prices above 1550$ and as shipping is in NY 150$ tax additional.

I wouldn't purchase unless you can get a guarantee in writing that they will exchange the unit for a new one if you encounter problems within some time interval (example: 14 days).

It is a lot easier these days to encounter problems on ANY electronic gadget, right out of the box. You don't want them to be YOUR problem.

EDIT: It looks like J&R has such a Return/Exchange Policy: http://www.jr.com/information/help.jsp#returns

Wait... does this mean if I already got a G74SX... I got a crappy one?

Thanks for ur replies.
Seeing such a low price of the A1 on J&R hints that they too are pushing to empty the remaining stock.So i think it wont be wise to get it from there.All the other sites quote above 1550$ so I cant go for it(coz i gotta pay addit. 150$ tax In NY).
Anyways is the G53 DH71 a good model.Suggest me a 500/750GB HD "if it has an empty HD bay".

Check and see if you actually have to pay sales tax in NY if you buy from Amazon. I haven't kept up on this, but it used to be that you didn't have to pay tax on Amazon purchases unless you lived in a state where they have an operational presence.

@BradyBoy
Yes,Amazon does charge sales tax in NY & some other states,so that affects my budget of 17k$ by 150$.I was inclined towards the A1 bcoz betwn it & the DH71 the only diffrnce is the processor + it does not include the bag & mouse.So its not worth the price diffrence.
Shall i get the A1 from either JR Or Adorama?

Adorama is.a very reliable outfit. I buy photographic equipment from them.

I can't recommend either of them one way or another, because I've never done business with them. If you have a little time to watch availability and price, I'd watch the Amazon listing for a week or so, and look for a chance to buy it directly from Amazon. (Unless one of those other sellers has a similarly generous return policy.) I've seen that model come and go there several times in the past 2-3 months.

You mentioned that you're going to have a friend in NY get it for you. Will anyone have a chance to open it here (in the U.S.) and test it before it gets to you in India? These models can occasionally have issues that require owners to return them or send them in for repair. I'd hate to see you in a position where you've got a problem unit in India and can't get help with it there.

Yes,I ll tell my uncle to use it for a few days,but he wont be able to test the games bcoz he is not that much into tech.
Do the newer G53 TH71 models have those problems?(What problems are u exactly talking about?)

BrodyBoy

I didn't mean to scare you! Keep in mind that a forum like this is going to attract a lot more owners who are having problems & troubleshooting, rather than those who are happily using their perfectly-functioning laptops.

Occasional issues can affect any of the G-series models (or any laptop, for that matter). Some units have had bad touchpads, some owners have experienced keyboard issues they can't resolve with software or BIOS fixes, a few have had displays or speakers that get balky. Again, any laptop could have hardware issues, and I don't meant to imply that you're likely to get a problem unit.

I'd recommend that your uncle set it up and just use it normally for a few days. Have him type on the keyboard, use the touchpad, play some audio, etc. Basically, just use the laptop and make sure nothing weird pops up. (Have him make an effort to use the touchpad as much as he can.)

Ok,I ll do as u say.
Just one more thing,even if these issues arise later they can repaired under warranty,right?Bcoz there are Asus service centres where I live,so I guess I ll be able to use the Global warranty even in India to get these issues resolved.
So which model would u guys suggest for my budget of 1550$?
Hoping I ll soon be a happy ROG Lappy owner...

I wonīt be that sure about global warrany. I am from south america (Argentina) and i ask them if they have service in here, even if they have in Brasil, i donīt mind getting up to there, and they told me that no. That i have to buy it in here to get the warranty. Im not telling that in India is the same, but you better ask!
Good luck!

@Perni
AFIK the Global warranty is applicable in India.
To confirm i have sent a mail to to the Indian reps.

I'm not an expert by any means, but I think the ASUS G74SX-NH71 has pretty nice specs, and the cost is $1400.

They may have just stopped for the fiscal year. Or they have a stock built up. Or they are going to retrain their quality dept.. or maybe . . .

I would focus on which hardware features you really want. For example, do you really want it to have a blu-ray drive, or is DVD/CD okay? Do you need it to have two hard drives? ( I honestly wouldn't care how much RAM it has, since it's so easy and cheap to add more of that.)

I think the A1 is pretty fully-featured at your $1550 price point. But if you don't need the BD drive, there are a number of great models that are otherwise similar for considerably less than that. Also, if you ever think you're going to add an SSD, like many people do, getting a model with one drive could make sense.

Look at it this way, if your machine couldn't be repaired and they had no direct replacements, they would probably have to give you the new hopefully improved replacement!

@Brodyboy,
I wanted the A1 bcoz it offers the best config at that price(1.5Tb Hd,Bag,mouse,etc.)
BD Drive is not my utmost priority.
I think the TH71 would be a good option.The only difference is ,it has 500GB HD & it does not include Bag n Mouse.So could u guys suggest some good medium priced Gaming mouse,bag(link would be appreciated).
Also suggest a 500Gb Hd(I dont need a SSD)
Thanks,please reply..

I just got my G74SX A1 in the mail from J&R... I saw that same deal for $1479 and jumped on it! I also found a 'free shipping' code so I got it for $1479 delivered to boot :)

That was a 'Black Friday' deal I think as when I went back to look at it the next day it was back up to $1599 on there. I just powered this up yesterday for the first time and she is spot on perfect so far except for the speakers not being all that great but I went into THX and adjusted them to 'external speakers' and they sound about 15% better now. But as far as the 'bugs' I have been reading about I have not run into one yet. Mine is quiet with no fan noise, the keyboard and the trac pad work great as well...

The only thing that had me scratching my head was that when I installed the newest drivers from NVDA for the GPU and tried to watch a blue ray I could not see a picture, it was blacked out in ROXIO Cinema but I could hear it... So I rolled the drivers back and it works now. Will have to see what's up with that but I have been reading this forum to try to find out a solution.

So far I am VERY HAPPY and the service and shipping from JR.com has been great. I orderd a new router and MW3 which will be here tomorrow from there as well. Can't wait to test out MW3, that will be the first game I install on here.

That's the way it goes. NVIDIA releases a new driver and some applications may not work as they used to. The Roxio CinePlayer does not appear to be the most robust DVD player, so I'm not surprised. Skype also has issues with the latest NVIDIA drivers: http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?5517-Latest-NVIDIA-drivers-Official-Beta-and-Modded&p=48868&viewfull=1#post48868

Could be that Skype changed something too. I find it hard to believe that all of the series 285 drivers suddenly changed . . . lol

Cool thanks for the link to that thread, i'll check it out.

I do not plan on doing any mods on this, I am going to keep her stock set up as it seems like many people start running into problems when they start to mod. I think the most I will do is put in another 4 RAM to get her up to 16 and that will be it.

I am even keeping the bloatware on there (lol) I just put it all in one folder on the desktop and it stays out of my way...

If MW3 plays well with the current GPU driver I'll just leave that in there as well until I run into issues with other games. I have also been looking at other aftermarket Blue Ray Software to install in case this ROXIO does not play well with newer drivers.

If your notebook starts acting funny, AND you have the Atheros WiFi card, update that drivers first http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?5126-Any-Kind-of-Lag-and-Atheros-WiFi-Card

Good luck with keeping an Asus notebook stock, though . . . ;)

You could get disk imaging software and make an image of the stock OS partition, then do a clean Windows installation to test out current drivers. If you run into problems, you could then simply swap images back to the stock OS configuration. Alternatively, If you want to devote 40-80 GB of your disk space, you could run a dual boot with 2 Windows 7 instances and be able to boot into whichever OS configuration you want.

I make a new image before I install most things, then instead of uninstalling it if I don't like it, I go restore that image. That also has the effect of consolidating the space on my SSD. :D
