Hi,

I recently got an ASUS G53SX-XT1 and saw that the max ram is 16gb.

Right now, it currently has 8gb of ram and I believe 4 slots. From what I picked up from a utility program, it shows 2x4gb sticks.

What I'm wondering is..

What is more efficient? Running 4x4gb sticks (filling up all 4 slots) or running 2x8gb sticks (using 2 slots on different channels)?

I'm planning to pick up G.Skill branded sticks from newegg, as price and great and reviews seem to be doing well.

Thanks for any help!

I'd say add two more 4Gb modules. Just match the specs of your existing memory.

does it matter in terms of speed and what not if i do 4x4gb or 2x8gb ?

No. But it would cost quite a bit more to replace all your memory rather than continue to use the 8Gb you already have.

8GB sticks are pretty new technology and are crazy expensive compared to the same amount in two identical 4GB sticks. Besides theres no guarantee that the notebook will be able to handle 8GB sticks in its slots.
Speed will not be different between an 8GB stick and two 4GB sticks if you match DDR3 frequency and CL timings exactly, which is easy to do unless you tweak your current ones with custom speeds.

Please let the forum know if you do go with 8GB sticks, and whether you have success with them or not! I'm interested in upgrading my G74 someday with 4x8GB sticks in it.
