View Full Version : G501JW - GPU throttle at 74 degree celsius

Hi everyone.
I've been using G501JW for two months.
There's a problem with modern and some old games.
about 5 minutes after the start of the game (e.g. GTA 5) at medium
settings (optimal according to nvidia experience) the temperature of the
graphics card rises to 74-78 degrees, while the GPU core frequency falls from
1029 MHz to 405 and the number of FPS drops by about a half.
Drivers are updated regularly. The current version of the graphics driver is 353.30 WHQL.
BIOS is also the newest of today (BIOS 206).
I bought a cooling pad with a good blowing, but it almost did not affect the
situation, since the bottom of the laptop has no cooling holes. The growth is only ~ 2
FPS.
The problem is the same as in this thread, but with the model G551JW: link (https://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?64295-G551JW-GPU-throttle-at-74-degree-celsius&highlight=gtx960m) .
the technical support doesn't send me a new BIOS but advises to take the laptop to an authorized service center.
do all the owners of this model have the same situation or just me?

I have the same problem. GPU throttles bad at 74C and it makes playing competitive games really hard.

I think ASUS just set the throttling temp too low.

This is clear.
but how to live with it?

I think, the more users will turn to technical support, the sooner they will start to solve the problem ..

Well I just contacted the support, we'll see.

You could try modifying the vbios (which is part of the bios on this laptop) yourself, but that's kinda risky and you may void your warranty

they incerease the cap to 79C but still performance drop and signifcant underclock to 980.1. dunno but to me its still good, but yeah i dont like fps
drops on my game.

serialgign whats the support saying?

They recommended a bios update (although I told them I already had the latest version) or a recovery. Not really helpful ...

funny asus guy , well im gonna ask them for some beta bios that caps the gpu up to 80~C up , i hope they do make it ,
its not affecting the game but the performance of the game. i hope u guys help me by requesting the same thing .

all the answers of the support are in the style of Jen Psaki and make no sense. this is sad..

sadly our only option for now is to decrease the cpu power . to reduce the temp.
i know some game may affect for this but there's no option for now.

Yes, reducing the frequency of the CPU reduced the temperature of the GPU. GPU frequency is now almost stable ~ 1079 MHz. but the FPS in GTA 5 is also not stable and bugs have not gone away. Now what's the problem? CPU throttling! ??

guys, recently someone from forums.overclockers.ru managed to overcome throttling temperature of GPU GTX960M on my ASUS G501JW.
(screenshot attached).
Now you can increase the throttling temperature up to 92 degrees (or even remove it), and it remains after the changes in the nvidia inspector. the frequency of the GPU can be also changed (by more than 135 MHz), as well as GPU memory clock and GPU voltage.
60210

As a result, the video card now works much better.
Unigine Valley shows 1200 points with standard GPU settings, and then after unlock and overclocking the chip to 1400 MHz it is already 2000+ points.
But 3DMark 11 shows only 6000 points instead of 5500.

in GTA 5 the increase is noticeable (higher settings, less lag) but only up to the point of the processors' 84 degrees. then graphics settings have little effect, and you just need to move more slowly :) i.e. if before lags mainly appeared in the moments of complicated special effects, now they do mostly at very dynamically changing scenes.

I play on 5000 coolers rpm. on 4000 there is no point in changing or acceleration of throttling temperature. coolers speed can be changed in NoteBook FanControl (NBFC).
didn't test other games yet, but I think in less dynamic games the growth will be even more noticeable.

managed to remove throttling temperature of the CPU as well. but it gave the opposite effect - the GPU gained its temperature again. so this function is of no use for me

Are you change/mod/unlock the bios or vbios? if yes pls send me the bios pls
using Nvidia Inspector not work on my G501, still locking the temp at 74 degrees, thx

You can't just flash a different Bios, except the Official Asus ones or a backup made from one pre-installed, since you have laptop dependent info's saved within like Win keys etc... One thing you can do, rather tricky... Make a backup of your current Bios and exchange your vBios with a unlocked one from the same laptop model. I'll start ASAP to answer all PM's

Thank you Compwxr for unlocked/modding my bios, really appreciate it! :)
Here is ther result of using Nvidia Inspector, now i can slide the temperature the default is 74 degrees but now i change it to 87 degrees :D

Less lag when playing GTA 5 high setting 1080, even it reach 87 degrees the lag not noticable like before 54-60 fps (i think the clock not decrease too much :D)

60290

But the HwMonitor show the maximum temp at 87 degrees too :D

60291\

So, even you slide the max limit gpu temp to 90+, your gpu will reach that. Be careful and be wisely! :D

Thank you kaps26 for sending me NoteBook Fan Control Apps for adjusting speed of fan, really appreciate it :)
Here is the result!

60292

When gaming i set it to maximum speed, more cool temp huh :D

(SORRY FOR MY BAD ENGLISH) XD

Hi can you share the unlocked/modding bios or anything you have done to solve the GPU throttle problem with our G501jw, thanks :D

Hi compwxr , could you share how you modded the bios because I literally cannot take how slow my overwatch is running right now , 40fps even on the lowest setting and resolution . Thank you , any help would be much appreciated !

I've been recently working on a public release of a G551JW vBios with guides for installation. Next one will be G501JW

Guys, check the G551JW thread, there are good news.

Hello.
I installed a modified BIOS based on the 211 version, made by another person.
I would like to compare it with your modification.
As I understand it, you did a revision based on the 209 version of the BIOS.
Can I modify my original BIOS 211 according to your instruction http://voltground.com/haven/threads/3/#post-29 ?

Compwxr

Yes you can :)

Did everything according to the instructions. Just the temperature of throttling is available for changes. The frequency and voltage of the GPU are not available.

Hi All, does anybody know where I can find the unlocked/modded BIOS and the details on how to apply this? Any help is highly appreciated

same things here since Voltground went down all the files were lost and newcomer have to live with burning hot laptops....
I've got all the details to do this the only things missing is the modded vbios

Saved BIOS from voltground for ASUS ROG G501JW. But their site is closed now.

BIOS from voltground https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1yroc6-cL4KfnwrKTjAJUaKEw6MvCMIGz

But you must understand that without NoteBook FanKontrol modify the BIOS does not make sense. GPU will be heated up to 100 degrees and throttling will remain on or off / reboot the laptop.

profile for NoteBook FanControl under our model https://app.box.com/s/h74kdrfllh79hpov55aful8jiiye5z9f

Put a profile in a folder "Configs".

Do as the picture below to fans working at 5000 RPM

thanks Kaps, thanks to your fancontrol configuration, temperature decreased by 15. It is awesome, a bit loud though
