a couple of things here, first, has anyone else updated their bios in the g751jy to 208? i have updated to 208, and everything is running fine, but
just wanted any feedback from anyone else who has, as to how it is going for them. second, i have also installed the samsung sm951 pcie 3 512 gb ssd
and while i have not experienced any problems with it, just wanted any feedback from others who might have installed one as well, about performance,
and heating. thanks to all who participate. i appreciate it.

also, wondering why no one else on here has started a thread about the new bios?

There are plenty of post if not a thread, no worries though it is near impossible to find anything via search here ;)

Please do post data / benches on your sm951, what I've read is that it it only negotiates Gen 2 speeds.

I installed the SM951on 208 and it does much better than the Xp941 in terms of heat stuttering but i eventually made a custom bracket and mounted heatsinks on it to drop the temps a little with extended file transfers. Performance matches the online benchmarks with crystaldisk and the SM951 runs very nice.

what do you use to monitor the temps of it?

right now i am getting 1400 read and 1100 write speeds in as ssd benchmarks, and 1600 read/1450 write in crystal diskmark. the temps seem to hang around 32c at idle, and can rise up to just over 50c when really pushing it. so it all seems to work very well. i have the samsung 840 evo in the same bay as the sm951, and they don't seem to heat each other up as i first worried about.
the 208 bios seems to work very well, but windows 10 will no longer allow me to load intel xtu, which pisses me off.

No Intel XTU support on win 10 as well? Really?

For temp monitoring i use HWmonitor and an external probe thermo and a fluke infared thermo when its opened. On crystal im getting 1965 and 1456 for seq on ATTO im getting 2059 and 1541 after heatsink install. You can read more about the thermal issues here. unless your drive is packed and your not running optimize for trim you should be getting much faster your probably throttling yourself.

Are you running yours inside of a g751? I don't think you are as those speeds cannot be achieved over a 4 lane PCIe Gen 2 interface (what is in the G751). This is why his speeds are a bit lower.

Yes a g751 db73x and it does run at gen 3 i dont know where you got your information.

Actually the g751 m.2 speed drops when under idle for power savings just like the cpu but it clearly shows 3.0 x4 not 2.0 and heres a screenshot under load showing 8.

That is awesome, I've just seen multiple reports of Gen 2 speeds only, this is the first I've seen of Gen 3. I wonder what the difference is BIOS v208 perhaps?

aeolisio
07-26-2015, 06:25 AM
possibly but i had checked with tech support before purchasing my 751 and they confirmed all 751s in production were gen 3. most likely those people have not set up their drives correctly, did not enable optimization or are thermal throttling or a combination of those.

Hello even on my G751JY it is showing PCI version 3.0
I recently updated my BIOS to 208

Hi Guys

Does anyone know if the newer SM951 NVMe variant works with the G751 or is it only the SM951 AHCI variant

Thanks

We did get one to detect inside windows after hours of hassle and workarounds but it will not boot as os until asus releases nvme in the bios which they may never do. no one would feel the difference between the ahci and nvme versions in real world use.

Hello everyone!

I have some problem, maybe someone can help me. I have G751JY running latest bios. And SM951 256 Gb SSD. So, I can turn on my laptop ONLY if I
turn off USB 3.0 support in bios (xhci). Otherwise I can get only rog logo and blinking hdd led. That's all. Anybody know what is that bug about?

joshindaphils

Perhaps driver related? Can you do a safe mode boot?

How did you get the OS on to the 951? Has this always been an issue or has it just started?

Any logged errors?

Please do provide more info, unless someone can point you in the right direction off your existing description of the issue.

If you just updated to win 10 then you do need the updated ATKPackage found on the asus driver support page.

Ok. Will try to elaborate. Actually, it is very simple. If I turn on USB 3 support in BIOS then I can't turn on laptop, I mean it does not boot at all. In other words it hangs on the POST-screen, which is hidden by ROG logotype. But if I turn off USB 3 support in BIOS then I can boot my SSD normally, install OS etc. Everything working fine. Except, of course, USB 3 support. Only USB 2. That is the problem, and it seems to me definitely BIOS-SSD problem. Any ideas? What can I try?

ok, first thank you for responding with good information. i actually forgot about this thread, and haven't found it again until now. wish it would alert me when there are new responses.

next, according to that program, my drive is NOT running trim. i'm not sure why, but it does not return a result which concludes that trim is running on this drive. so i guess the logical question is how do i get the drive setup as you have setup yours? next, when i look in hwinfo 64, mine does say gen 3, but it doesn't change from the 5 gb/s current link speed, no matter what i put the drive through, even though it states a max of 8.0 gb/s. here is a screen shot of it below. any help is very much appreciated.

pics are in the bracket thread

for trim you need to optimize it once in windows under drive properties/tools. no idea why your not running at 8 as i didnt install yours. run through your drivers chipset and other intel drivers like rst. Not knowing exactly what you did i cant really say. i did clean installs and newest drivers with all 9 g751s i did the sm951 with and all are heatsinked to avoid thermal throttling.

ok. so i have run through the optimization for each of my drives. but here's the thing about the chipset drivers, and the rst. the intel auto detector doesn't work when i've completed the steps for that, and it can be extremely confusing which variants to load. so i am not assured that i am running the very best drivers where that is concerned. can you confirm for me, exactly which chipset drivers, and irst drivers you are putting on all of these g751jy's with the sm951? thanks for all of your help.

i am running win 10 btw, jfyi, and my sm951 rarely ever goes above 50c, even under heavy loads. the highest i have ever seen it was 59c. so i wouldn't think any throttling has played a part.
i am running driver 13.1.0.1058 for the 8 series chipset ahci controller, and the 10.0.10240.16384 driver for standard sata ahci controller.

one last thing, how did you stress your 951 to get it to show 8.0gb/s on the hwinfo 64 screen shot? thanks...

Aeolisio what are you taking about?
G751jy has HM87 chipset in which all 16 of 3.0 PCIe lanes are connected to Geforce 980m. (http://hwt.dk/images/literature/2014/23404/hm87-chipset-diagram-3x2.jpg)
Show me your HWINFO of your G752jy PCIe Express Root Port 5. If you really get 3.0 here you must be extremely lucky to get different chipset on your G751jy!

Here's mine :
64302
I also get 3.0 on Samsung NVME controller, but not 8GT/s which is limited to 5GT/s which is consistent with PCIe port 5 limitation of HM87 chipset:

Just follow this guide on win-raid forum (http://www.win-raid.com/t871f16-Guide-How-to-get-full-NVMe-support-for-all-Systems-with-an-AMI-UEFI-BIOS.html) to get G751jy to boot of any supported nvme SSD.

Boot yes, fully supported, not even close.
This has been done before and what you get after you mod your bios is pitiful speeds making it not worth the effort.
You posted this same thing over a year ago and no benchmarks on the drive. One member here did this very thing and got worse results from a 950pro NVME than he did with an SM951 AHCI M2. Brass tax is the G751JY came out at a bad time in the drive evolution. When the G751 JTs and JYs introduced the M2 SSD the SM951 AHCI OEM drives were the fastest and first drives to supersede SATA. Then along comes NVMe several months later that killed all of that.

FYI Aeolisio hasnt been active here for over a year.

I would love for you to prove me wrong by posting up crystal marks benchmarks that show an NVMe drive running at its rated speed on a G751.

Best SSD for the G751 is still what is supported out of the box, SM951 AHCI version (there is also and SM951 NVMe versoin so be careful when ordering)

I would hate for G751 owners to get their hopes built up thinking they can get an NVMe drive to run at rated speed. Anything past the 950 pro tops out at about 2800MBps due to the DMI bottleneck, even two in raid so no matter what you do even the G752 isnt going any faster.
