Hello everyone.
Im new to the forum.

I Have noticed on the asus g501 throttling of cpu at 86 while gpu at 79

And i thought that games would not use cpu that much..

So if i choose a power plan in the windows setting.. (high performance, balanced, powersaving)
While Setting the maximum processor power managment to 70%.. would this give a better performance and
More solid fps with less throttling or it will be of no difference.. and is it safe to use lower processor power in gaming
While returning it to normal setting during normal desktop use.

the thorttling starts with gpu , and if the gpu thorttle your fps drop. cpu doesnt matter.

the only option is to ask asus for a beta bios that tweak the temperature , atm i dont know.
if u can send asus support a email too so they make it.

i aleardy send it but no reply now.

I noticed reducing the cpu frequency this reduce the cpu throttling and this stop it reaching as low as 800 mhz. which lead less
sudden drops in fps and gpu doesnt reach 980 mhz and keeps above 1057..
I just need some confirm as i cant see if it reallly show a big difference or if it shows a difference after time of gaming
.in other words .. when cpu has less frequency it will have less heat and so less gpu heat as they share heat .
Is this information true or not as i cant find a clear information online
What are your temps during gaming like watcj dogs or gta v or any heavy game

hmm intresting, i try it.

Ok thank you

okay your theory is correct , by reducing the cpu performance the heat generates doesnt even exceed 77C and make the gpu can push the stable performance
im on 70% policy performance and i recommended it to 50% if you want to try it .

strange but it still the same, asus needs to up the temp lock.

what an ugly truth

Edit : nope still reach 79C on Withcer 3 , only in some games.
Edit 2 : Doing 50% performance policy never reach 79C on Witcher 3 (High Setting)
Edit 3 : Doing 50% performance policy never reach 79C on GTA 5 (High Setting)

all Resolution is on 1920x1080

How is the performance on 50 percent cpu... is it better fps
Is it safe to reduce the cpu on gaming and returning it to normal on desktop use on a long term scale

it's safe , really OCing what makes the cpu gets broken not downclocking it.

and what about the frames.. did you see any improvment

pretty much the same , just no thorttling . or sudden fps drop.

Hi everybody
I played more than one hour GTA V with the highest graphic quality (in the FHD resolution) and no throttling and no frame rate drop.
I just update my bios to 209 version, update my graphic card driver and also use a full aluminum coolpad under my laptop (DeepCool N9). No reducing the performance of CPU.
I logged the load, temperature and frequency of my graphic card during the game by GPU-z. Maximum temperature it logged is 78 degree with 99% load and 1019 MHz frequncy of GPU core.

If you use a aluminum body coolpad, as aluminum has high heat conduction, it gets the heat from the bottom of laptop nicely. Because this model doesn't have a vend, other coolpads dowsn't work well for it.

If you need more information or help, I am here for you.

the problem is we would love to play and use our laptop anywhere , and not using coolpad, thats why the real solution for this case is either downclock or reduce the cpu performance to make less heat generated or use your coolpad.
sadly that's the problem here .

Bios 210 doesnt fix thorttle issue, Why asus why, can we just ask just a bit bios update for this thorttling .

My nerves throttle after launching any game, any help? Dunno about the fps or temperatures, but i see screen flickering. Could it bee problem with the laptop?

yes , RMA it , or you can try bios update and see it fix your problem or not.

someone has solved the problem with the GPU throttling?

someone has solved the problem with the GPU throttling?

no, it still there .

sigh asus wont help us solve the problem

Oh christ what a problem. Finally I understand why my Crysis 3 playthrough some time ago was slow as hell. It was this throttling thing.

Testing with Unigine Valley benchmark I go to 800 Mhz Core Clock pretty fast, sometimes even under that. This with no changes..

So far I tried taking out the battery and move HDD to USB enclosure so theres less heat generating stuff in. <- Didn't help jack
Dug up an old under cooling pad (Antec Notebook Cooler Classic, just found out the name), this has a small effect.
Put the CPU to 99 % performance, now this is great.

With these I can stay above 900Mhz Core in full wind & rain, closer to 1000 Mhz with no rain.

Is the thermal repasting gonna void my warranty?

Gonna try mailing Asus Support soon.

EDIT: Okay maybe not, theres this guy. Gonna try to get this tweak!
https://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?64295-G551JW-GPU-throttle-at-74-degree-celsius/page21

EDIT2: Also going down the laptop cooler route, just ordered a Cooler Master Notepal XL since its easiest to get for me out of the big brands and has a big airflow of 89 CFM http://www.coolermaster.com/mobile/notepal-all-notepals/notepal-xl/. Too bad that Deepcool N9 is not available in Finland and won't get delivered from Amazon. Looks cool as hell. Its interesting that this laptop takes air through the keyboard but since cooling the underside works too I might as well try that.
Asus Support has also been emailed but I don't have much expectations from them.

EDIT3: Right, have had Cooler Master Notepal XL for a couple weeks and it doesn't give much help. Temps shoot to 78 pretty fast and stay there. This cooler isn't enough to keep them underneath the throttle temp.
Altough core clock doesn't fall as much. I can keep above 1000 Mhz, usually close to 1100 while gaming so maybe thats something. (CPU still at 99%, no Turbo Boost)
I'm also giving Deepcool N8 a go as I just found it for 15 € used on German Amazon. Lets see if the aluminium really does help like claimed in a previous post.
