View Full Version : G73JH Upgrade options?

So a while back, I opened up my laptop to clean. While disassembling, i aciddently broke off the chip on the MB for the webcam. "Big deal" i thought, "I don't use the webcam of mic at all."

Well long story short, after putting it back together, the trackpad doesn't work, Again no big deal for me, and the soundboard doesn't work, can't plug headphones or mic into it, bad for me xP

And now my RAM is failing. Now I found good crucial RAM for around $15 for 4GB I'm gonna get 3 or 4 of them. I found a refurbished MB for around $98 and a soundboard for around $10. My question is, the MB has a bunch of different versions. Obviously I'm going to open it back up and get the specific model number, but I have the Intel Core i-7 Q740 1.73GhZ...Can I upgrade this to something higher, or should I just stay where I'm at?

Hi there.

Sorry to hear that putting your G73JH back together didn't go very well.

Have a look at this link for disassembly and reassembly. Perhaps you missed a step? (https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Reapplying+Asus+G73+CPU+and+GPU+Thermal+Paste/4826)

Here is a video as well. (https://youtu.be/bWF2c85CmpU)

As for an upgrade to the CPU or GPU on this laptop, it might not be worth the trouble however. Finding parts now would be very difficult and expensive. It might be cheaper to just buy a new laptop. That is the thing about laptops though... RAM and hard drive upgrades can be done but don't expect CPU or GPU upgrades. Having said all that, there have been some people who have managed it. Have a look at this link. (http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/327906-28-upgrade-asus-g73jh)

Here is more info on CPU upgrades. (http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/g73-cpu-upgrade.541063/)

For GPU upgrades, it looks like you need a card of MXM Type 3.0b. Look here (http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/asus-g73jh-video-card-replacement.154473/)and here (http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2047675.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.XGPU+MXM+3 .0+Type+B.TRS0&_nkw=GPU+MXM+3.0+Type+B&_sacat=0). I'm not sure if you need a new cooler or if you can use the original cooler for this or not.

On my G73JH-A1 I've upgraded my hard drives, Ram, and wireless card with great success.

If anyone had upgraded their CPU or GPU on their G73JH, please let us know what parts you used, where you got them from, and how successful you were.
