Does my motherboard support 32GB RAM?

I googled and some motherboards looks like they do support 32GB RAM....
Not sure about mine....

The short answer is yes, 32GB works in the G74s.

I have no idea if my G74SX board is identical to yours or not (hey gurus: does ASUS put the same standard motherboard in the G74 series?), but 32GB seems to work fine in my G74.

Yes, it will work. I threw in 2x8GB Patriot sticks in my G53SX and it works perfectly. It sees 24GB at the moment, but plan on bumping it to 32GB later.

The only difference between the two is size. The guts are practically the same. Even the site I bought mine from (TD) says 16GB maximum.

The 8GB sticks are still rather new and getting easier to obtain. They do work well, though.

BIOS recognizes 24GB RAM
And Windows 7 Ultimate also sees 24GB :)

Wow!.. 32 GB on a G74.

Mine has 16 GB and methinks its already fast.

What do you think about the added benefits (e.g. gaming, etc.) of using 32 GB, aside from what you've mentioned in your own thread?
I suppose if you've got a game that'll use this much RAM if it sees that its available, then it would be spectacular. I'm not a gamer so i don't know if today's games would expand themselves into 32GB? Question for the crew on these forums.

I need it specifically because I can now run 8 individual instances of my single-threaded code, each instance of which will use a few GBs each. 32GB really allows me to take complete advantage of using the 8 virtual cores in the core i7 CPUs. Thats really where I see the power of 32GB for potentially everyone; since most apps nowadays aren't multi-threaded, you must run several instances of the same app if you want multi-threaded performance, and each instance can then have a huge chunk of RAM to itself.

Also my display and visualization program will simply take any amount of RAM that it sees available to it if called for, so 32GB means I can load more data at a time to have a good detailed look at. Heck it would even use 256GB of RAM if I could cram that much into the G74.

I doubt loading up your G74 with 32GB of RAM will make it any faster at all, unless you're already pushing the limits of the 16GB you have in there already.

Thats excellent! Good to see that you have Ultimate too, which will be able to address 32GB fully.

Never dealt with KomputerBay brand b4, but I'm sure its alright. Give your sticks a full test with memtest86+ (download and burn an ISO from here -> http://www.memtest.org/download/4.20/memtest86+-4.20.iso.zip ) and if you don't see any errors then you've got good memory.

Nice to see folks pushing their G74s to new limits!

The Max Memory Size specs on ark.intel are per channel I think (see also discussion ayt http://forum.notebookreview.com/hardware-components-aftermarket-upgrades/567846-16-gig-intel-core-i7-2630qm-hows-work.html). So, dual channel memory will ultimately address2x the max memory spec.

Unfortunately I haven't seen anyone on these forums who have had success with 16GB of any RAM other than 1333MHz. Above this would be considered overclocking for the core i7 2630 and 2670QM chips, and ASUS seems determined not to let us users do that; hence the ultra-conservative BIOS in the G74. Oddly though they allow it in the G73:

It will be interesting if, when the 8GB sticks start to become more popular, corsair or kingston release 1x8GB 1600 MHz sticks: perhaps then with two of those in the G74 the BIOS will finally allow 16GB to work at overclocked speeds. The G74 certainly had no trouble recognizing 2x8GB sticks = 16 GB in my system when I was testing to see if it could go to 32GB. But for now if you want the 1600 MHz speeds you will have to use 8GB.
Read http://www.anandtech.com/show/4503/sandy-bridge-memory-scaling-choosing-the-best-ddr3/8. The "sweet spot" of 1600MHz is not so sweet for laptops yet, since the increase in cost from going above 1333 MHz is still massive. Save your $$ for an SSD, IMHO.

Excellent. Good to hear, especially that it is no fluke that 32GB works in the G74SX. For curiosity's sake, what is your Memory bandwidth (in MB/s) reported by memtest86+? I just want to know if mine is comparable too. Thanks!

Reports 13,955 MB/s ~14GB/s. 200 GBP + 6 GBP spent on them.

I've attached a screenshot of memtest86+ in action...bandwidth and everything else the same as yours. It would be good to know either of us aren't necessarily losing bandwidth (as far as I know we're the only two on this forum to go to 32GB), so later today I'm going to try putting 2x4=8 GB back in and see what the MB/s is for a moderate amount of RAM in dual channel mode.

ASUS G74SX memory spec as DDR3 1333 MHz SDRAM, 4 x SO-DIMM socket for expansion up to 16 G SDRAM (Quad Core), 2 x SO-DIMM socket for expansion up to 8 G SDRAM (Dual Core) , so i think maybe over spec will cause system unstable.

Forget ASUS spec...there have been many people on these forums that have successfully run 4x8GB=32GB in their G74's and G75's problem-free now for months/years (I'm going on 1.5 years now with 32GBs...never a problem, in fact I forget its there). Your problem could be one or more faulty memory sticks causing the BSODs. I suggest you download and burn a CD with memtest86+ (here is a bootable image to burn: http://www.memtest.org/download/4.20/memtest86+-4.20.iso.zip) and carefully test your sticks, first all 4 installed, then pair by pair, and then singly until you find the one stick that causes memtest to report errors. Then you've got a case for an RMA from your RAM manufacturer: most good manufacturers (I'm thinking of Corsair here...) will replace your entire kit even if only one stick is bad.

Don't forget to let memtest86+ test each pair or single stick for a total of three (3) passes minimum...errors may not show up the 1st pass.

Forgetting you have 32 GB of RAM, @fostert, that is the quietest way of gloating about your RAM I know! :p Actually, thanks for the excellent advice! As to using that download, you simply unzip it and burn it to a blank CD. If you (like me) don't have any of those archaic optical media pieces lying around, there is another download that works for a USB key. Simply download (http://www.memtest.org/download/4.20/memtest86+-4.20.usb.installer.zip), unzip, and run the .EXE with a blank USB key inserted in your computer. Keep in mind that it will format the USB key, so don't have anything on it.

Not gloating...its true! And thats the best reason to buy 32GB, so you'll never know its there,until you watch your HDD to begin swapping like mad. But then I often forget my age, today's date, and brushing my teeth. I guess it just means that I have enough RAM for my daily usage (typically I think I run at least 8-24 GB used at any one moment of the work day).

Good idea on the USB version of memtest86. Guess I am out of the times with an optical drive and all. Heck I still use Iomega JAZ disks at home!

And I thought my 4 GB flash drives were starting to get out of date...LOL :D I will admit, 32 GB of RAM would be sweet, but not worth the expense to me, since when I run 16 GB out, it means a program has bugs.

It has 4 memory slots, but they run in dual-channel configuration, like most notebooks. To run 32 gigs of RAM, you have to totally disassemble the computer to get to all of the RAM slots. Key note, take your time and be careful. It will run with 32 GB of 1333 RAM, @fostert does it.

Haha, I actually only have 14, which limits me to a maximum 9GB RAM disk without getting low memory warnings from Win7. Once I can max out the 32GB limit and upgrade the CPU to use the 1666 data rate I'll be in really good shape for gaming and for being able to have more than just one game installed to the RAM disk at a time.
