Hi everyone,

I'm French (sorry for my language level). I'm a owner of a G771JW with a 128GB SSD and a 1TB SSD. I want to buy the SSD M.2 PCI-e Samsung 950 Pro (or SM951 I don't know) to have more space and more performance.
But I've two problems:
- I d'ont know if the 950 PRO (with NVME is compatible and bootable) is compatible with my laptop. And I don't know if these two SSD heating a lot ? (I must buy cooling pad ?)
- I want to clone my actual SSD with the OS (Windows 10) with all programms to this new SSD. But I don't know how to do that.
I search a good program to clone this SSD to the other one, and I want to make this new one bootable.

Can you advice me ?

Thank you :)

Hi Tinmar,

I had a look on the internet about the Samsung 950 Pro and think it should fit in your laptop model. There should not be a heat problem as the SSDs usually don't get that hot. So no cooling pad is required.

As for the cloning, I would not suggest the cloning method! Best practice is always a fresh install of windows. You could however make an image of your current setup, install windows on the new SSD and load the created image as this will put your newly installed windows to the state of your current one.

As for creating images, you should find quite a few programs and guides on the internet (Google + How to create an image of my hard drive).

Hi

Thank you for your Answer ! The 950 Pro is a NVME type and SM951 is AHCI type, and I don't know if the NVME version works :/
How can I a do a fresh install ? I've no disk of the system :/

Not sure what the G771 has it will either be PCIe M.2 NVME or SATA. You could install something like Hwinfo 64 and run the full program in your system information should show you which. If your current system is running in RAID mode Cloning is your best bet as Raid drivers will be needed to Clean install. Samsung cloning software has worked for some. Macrium Reflect (http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx)works for everyone. Here is a video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6Sjc-co4Wk) for doing this with a G752VY should work for you too. If you choose to clean install see this thread (https://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?76993-Guide-How-to-install-windows-8-8-1-10-The-proper-way-(UEFI-based-installation)) read it all and insure your using the right protocol for your notebook. To get a ISO or create a install USB MS Window Download pages (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10)

So if you look in you user manual starting on page 112 it show that you have 2 standard 2.5 drive bays. These will take regular 2.5 hard drives/SSD and cloning is very simple if your wanting to clone from a Hard Drive/SSD to the M.2 slot it appear you will have the same issues as the G751 notebooks I think they are covered in the how to install thread I linked you to. GPX started that thread before the G752 were release.

A little searching I have found you this thread specific to your G771 https://rog.asus.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-78144.html
