ASUS welcomes a new era of PC customization by being the first motherboard brand to support 3D-printable parts, an initiative that allows hobbyists, enthusiasts and modders to add unique modifications to their ROG Strix X99 Gaming and ROG Rampage V Edition 10 motherboards. These boards feature easily swappable parts, enabling passionate DIYers to design and 3D-print their own replacement name plates and logos in a variety of colors and materials to match their themed builds. This exciting development brings a whole new world of personalization to the DIY PC experience.

I suppose the possibilities of creation are endless, I'm not much of an artist but the white x99 deluxe II gives me some ideas for some spider webs in any color.

I would love to see some automotive design themes integrated into motherboard aesthetics.

Not exactly ROG's techno-Mayan aesthetic, but cool none the less. I guess I could come up with some hand sketches.

This would also work really well with water cooling... speaking of which... I would love to see motherboard pieces that aesthetically integrate with watercooling components. By this I mean if I put a full cover block on my HEDT mobo, I don't have to loose the aesthetic appeal of the board because I can have a shroud made that fits around the monoblock. This is something I emailed JJ about a couple months ago.

Other random ideas:
- Yes to GPU supports
- Yes to LED plates (IE LED shines through and displays a graphic)
- Partnerships with game devs (license the use of their brand/character images)
- Cover for headers on the bottom of the mobo
- Support for desktop and HEDT boards
- Publish color codes for ROG colors (IE the colors on your products)
- "Empty" ram sticks for those that only have 2/4 or 2/8, 4/8, etc RAM slots populated
- Focus on boards without a shroud (mATX never gets a shroud from the factory)
- Angled GPU holders (http://rog.asus.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/snef-devels-eye-2.jpg)
- Bracket/support for M.2 heatsinks (brace against gravity)
- Giant CPU cooler brace (below CPU socket as part of shroud)
- "Mount points" for 3D printed pieces on mobos out of the factory (make official designs more user friendly to those less technically inclined)

IMO a community feedback/outreach push, then a review period and then formal PR would probably be the best path Maybe a toolkit down the line and even further a dedicated website with a database of designs (official and unofficial)

It feels like I'm hearing this from someone that's from the future :)

Awesome ideas, but since this project is just starting out I think it would be a little difficult to incorporate the ideas you suggested but for sure I'll pass them on to the correct team. I would really love to have a motherboard that looks like a really cool car engine. :D

While I don't own a 3d printer myself, I looked for a shop to do that for me, so that'll be great

I especially love how some hide the cables
Having a clean look is why I opted for a board with armor in the first place

These additional parts could add quite something

Personally I think I would try to have some of the bigger parts with a ROG logo "cut out" so I could put some plexi under it n give it some rgb led touch
Depends on the 3d printers quality I guess

That being said, it would be helpful if you/Asus could define what is within the scope of Asus's current capabilities for this initiative. That could be specific parts of the motherboard, dimensional constraints, the current plastic being used, etc.

There are a lot of great 3D printing services like Shapeways

We expect majority to go with the 3D printing services as that way you're assured a certain level of quality and it won't take an abundance of time to learn all about 3D printing.

We'll definitely have more and more designs available and looks like some of the other designs will have bigger ROG logo

yeah we use FDM, it´s no problem. You could use ABS Plastic, then you´re fine with the heat it can take more heat than your CPU (approx. 170-180° and then it starts that the material gets soft again)

How about a cover for the formula VIII ?

I absolutely love the board, but my only gripe is the completely choked M.2 enclosure.
I would like it if I could print a custom cover lid with a heatsink hole in it.

Especially since you guys dont sell the lid separate for me to cut it with a dremel risk free..

You guys may want to look into doing some testing with the Mark Forged MKII. I am having a backplate made by a guy with one and it is pretty amazing.

It can do fiber glass, carbon fiber, HSHT fiber glass, and kevlar reinforced nylon. The CF and Fiber Glass are crazy strong and could easily support multiple water cooled GPUs with little material. CF also has really good thermal conductivity.

Hello guys, about the Cable combs:

It is said to be for a neater cable management. I printed 3 of these and sadly they don't fit for my cables.

Are they for specific psu cables? I am making my psu cables by myself (i buy everything at gosumodz).

If I measured right, the needed thickness for cable combs from gosumodz are 4,2 mm.
The printed ones are sadly 2,2 mm for each cable.

Can anybody change these cable combs for my needs?
If I just scretch extend it by length, the cable comb would be 16 cm long, which wouldnt be practical.

These are the cable combs I am using. These are fitting. (http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1466152)

That feature seems a little bit abandoned but i'm really interested in it and was wondering if there's a way to download some 3d model files for parts that hasn't been relased but that are shown in the pictures, such as the GPU Holders, the bottom motherboard cables shield, the RAM fan holder, etc...

Also... it would be awesome if there was some kind of 3d model of the motherboards itself ( in my case the x99Strix ) to design, measure and try some designs before printing.

Thank you!

Seems like Bahz just realized this feature would ruin all the "armored mobo" sales.

IS this dead though? I hope not and still waiting for the team to release all the specifics each mobo has so we can all start playing around the designs.

No this is definitely not dead and we really want to push the idea of 3D printing for all the compatible products. We're working on the files and slowly but surely we'll share the files of all parts that we have thoroughly tested.

Hello Bahz,

I know there must be many tests to be done before the mods can be released, but the announcement of the project was in June, and I can say for myself, I am very anxious for the release of the pieces of sabertooth z170.
Is there any information that you can provide us regarding the expectations of making available the files of the 3D parts?

Glad to know isn't dead already.
I'll wait patiently for the release of tested parts, but i was wondering if there's a chance to get the 3d model of the Motherboards itself... or some kind of sizes and specifications so we can start designins some parts for them. :D

Just wanted to throw in my support. I am glad to see this initiative isn't dead.

I do think a little more marketing is required though. Reddit, LinusTechTips, OCN, PCPartpicker, etc nobody is really talking about this initiative (and they should!). I think PCPartpicker would be the best channel. A contest on their frontpage around the Kaby Lake mobo launch would be a success, I think.

I don't know if this would be structurally possible, but one thing I would love to see somebody attempt is a 90 degree GPU holder (bottom of GPU faces outside of the case vs the traditional down position). I would love to mount my GPU this way, even though my case doesn't officially support it. It would have to brace the card on the PSU shroud and have space for the PCIE ribbon. Throw in some hard mounting mechanism and you have yourself a handy piece of kit.

Anyone have the files for the bottom of the z170 pro-gaming/aura board? I find all these cables ugly to be seen and I really wanna hide them. It would really clean up my build.

Also what free program can I use to open these files and modify them myself?

Hey ROG Community

I'm new here and want to bump this thread again.
I want to introduce myself faster:

I'm a 18 years old guy from Germany, very interested in CGI, working with programs like Blender and programming from time to time.

Since some months I started to Modding my case.
Now I have a Problem. I have the Asus z170 ProGaming Aura Mainboar and saw this 3D Printing Project here:
https://www.bit-tech.net/blog/2016/10/31/3d-printing-with-asus-rog/

On the original (US) website of my mainboard I didn't find the 3D Printings to Download.
Only on the german website (https://www.asus.com/de/Motherboards/Z170-PRO-GAMING-AURA/3D-Printing/) I found the 3D Modells to download. But when I downloaded them I only had .txt files.

Then I found this Thread here, but the models I want aren't here.
The Cable cover for the bottom:
64104
And the custom nameplate:
64105

Did Asus give up the 3D Printing Project? My Mainboard was the first one which supported this and now I can't find the models :(

Thank you for your help

I have uploaded the project to my AsusWebStorage (https://www.asuswebstorage.com/navigate/s/3865708C1632404A8BB6C0AB507BB1354).
In a nutshell, I wanted to have a cable cover with some kind of unique design. Since our boards all have RGB effects to them... I figured it would be cool if there was a shroud that encouraged the RGB effects.
I haven't produced this yet but I did order it already so results are pending.
I basically engraved the ROG logo and hollowed out the inside (24mm x 35mm).
I then added two identical pieces (24mm x 35mm x 1mm).
One to be the base of the emblem (of your color choice but I'd recommend white or a frost colored transparent) and the other would be for the cover.
Inside, you can place an led and run the wires out of the carved slot(s) that I had designed into it.
Then you just attached the cover (the other 24mm x 35mm x 1mm piece) and secure it. (Personally, I'd probably just tape it.)

Now I'm VERY new at this! Literally less than 24 hours of experience. So I'm expecting there to be errors and I'm counting on some experienced members to identify and assist me in correcting them.
Also, I'm hoping that someone might be able to assist me in finding a way to fit an RGB (plus white) led inside that will be bright enough to shine through the white piece of plastic on top nearest to the emblem.
I found this site Wayjun Technology (http://www.wayjun.com/) and it looks pretty promising.

Here are some screenshots of the design:

ALL DONE!
I did need to use THREE standoff screws to make the damned thing for due to the LED header and the optional USB C (I think that's what it is) connector. They got in the way of the "stands" so by using three stand offs I was able to work around the issue. For the LED I found a small strip of 3 LEDs about 4 inches long but since I only needed one (the center) I used some hit glue to fix it to the back. Tucked the extra wires back (just in case I wanted to extend from it later) and plugged it into the top LED header. Works perfectly!

Ha
It isn't my URL. It's what automatically comes up for me when I click Downloads then 3d printing on the top of this page. Very strange. I can copy the link from the 3d printing image which is:
https://rog.asus.com/24632016/pc-mods/download-3d-printable-parts-now/

But it changes to that error page after I click it and shows that other link in the error and the address bar.

Doesn't matter really. Asus botched the I/O cover for the Z270G if your using a graphics card. The I/O cover mounts internally to itself in the middle of the pci slot completely blocking the ability to install a gpu. They should have designed it with an external mount like what MSI did on the B150M Mortar Arctic. (Screw tab on the outside of the cover not inside. This way the actual cover would stop right at the edge of the bottom I/O connections but there would still be a small screw tab to connect it to the mounting hole on the board. :-(

Bug it's fixed.

For the 3D printed files, a quick way to find the different pieces available is to go on the product page directly. We've added a 3D printed tab for the motherboards that support the 3D mount / specific 3D part designed by our team.

Strix Z270G Gaming (https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/ROG-STRIX-Z270G-GAMING/3D-Printing/)

For the Maximus VIII Formula, the 3D printing project wasn't implemented yet. The Z170 Pro gaming Aura (https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Z170-PRO-GAMING-AURA/) was the first board, 3D printing friendly.

Yes the link is now fixed. Although it should really lead to all the 3d downloads otherwise the section is pretty pointless if they all aren't available in the same location. I get being able to get them from the specific product page but if there is going to be a specific section for 3d printing they everything that is made available should be in that section.

I get what your saying with the VIII Formula I guess I was thinking about the next version Formula. It would be nice for the designer of the Z270G to redesign the I/O 3d printed part so it surrounds the I/O plugs closest to the PCI-E slot and then has the screw mount tab on the outside of the cover. The way it is designed now you can't use a graphics card in the main x16 slot because it ends up being blocked by the I/O cover from the look the I/O cover and how it is designed with the orientation of the lower mounting hole. :-/

Trying my hand at correcting the Z270G I/O cover since the R&D department at Asus neglected to think about people wanting to actually use their PCI-E 16X slot if they use the cover.
Have never done 3d modeling before and I'm getting to a point where I can't move the outer wall without skewing the whole screw mount section. :-( trying 123D now and of course having to somewhat learn (har har yea sure) a new cad program all over again.

First SS is the box area with the triangle reinforcement section removed that would be sitting in the way of the first pci-e slot if you just print their 3d file as is. Second screen shot is after moving the outer wall to where it ideally would be right at the edge of the audio I.O box. I mocked up my old B150M I/O cover onto my Z270G the other day to show how this cover should have been designed and how tight the clearance is with that cover.

Not only will the lower upright part (pictured below) have to be edited but the actual fluff part with all the angles (the actual I/O cover) will have to be shrunk down because with the Asus design it's too long. :-( I have a guy that was going to edit this for me and print it but wasn't understanding what I was telling him needed to be done to the below piece. So I'm having to attempt to edit it enough so he understands. lol I hope the second photo aside from the skewing of the recessed area for the transistor of what ever it is that is soldered to the board by the screw mount shows him enough of what I was trying to get across on what needs to be done to make it actually functional with a gpu.

Well seems after over a year of trying to get through to Asus in the fact the Z270G I/O cover is useless if you want to use a gpu they are going to finally correct it.

From a response from a supervisor:

"Your case was escalated to our engineers who advised that The earliest that we can correct the file is the 26th of June."

Now for them to just release working versions of the Aura software alot sooner then they do to be compatible with Windows updates. Or better yet just rewrite the program completely so it doesn't depend on specific Windows versions and will still work properly after a Windows update. At least they are telling me the last stable version doesn't work because of the newest Windows updates. Who knows if that is really the case. lol

I shot you a pm also but where on earth did you find a short rgb strip like that? I've been looking everywhere and I'm coming up empty. I want to take the I/O cover from a Z270E, Z270F, X370F and use it on my Z270G. Problem is Asus has a circuit board with a mass of wires connecting to the board for that rgb light in the cover. So it's not a standard 5050 rgb header. So I want to remove the circuit board and install a short strip like you have then connect it to a 5050 header on my Z270G for Aura to control it when they get a working version again for the newest Win 10 update.

Here is the cover that is used on all 3 of those boards above
https://imgur.com/a/ln48Hjy

As you can see that connection isn't going to hook up to a 5050 header. LOL

They have the Shapeways account and I've tried messaging them through that and attempted to contact Asus support. So far, no luck in getting my hands on them. The design they have on the Shapeways site has some updates over the ones at the beginning of this thread. If push comes to shove I'll probably just end up building my own design, but if I can find the original file for the updated version that would be preferable. Specifically I'm looking for this particular model (https://www.shapeways.com/product/49NWE57QH/rog-asus-gaming-m-2-fan-holder-for-ngff-m2-ssd?optionId=61616644&li=marketplace)
